WHAT IF...? - [SPOILER] Joins The Ravagers In One Of The Show's Craziest Changes To The MCU Yet

Today's episode of What If...? once again makes some sweeping changes to the MCU as we know it, but there's a new addition to the Ravagers who...well, let's just say you won't have seen this twist coming!

The second episode of What If...? puts the spotlight squarely on T'Challa's transformation into Star-Lord, and we quickly learn that the Wakandan was way more successful in that role than Peter Quill.

The hero we know better as Black Panther has created a much better galaxy, but his biggest achievement was helping Thanos go straight. Yes, the Mad Titan is now a member of Yondu's Ravagers having abandoned his quest to wipe out half of all life in the universe after T'Challa came up with a better way to distribute resources from world to world (eliminating the need for genocide).

While Thanos clearly still believes his plan would have worked - that becomes something of a running joke - it's interesting that T'Challa was able to talk him down and help make this villain a good guy.

We'll have an in-depth breakdown of the episode for you a little later today, but this Thanos even manages to make peace with Nebula. What that means for Gamora is never explained, though it's possible that will be revealed down the line if What If...? chooses to return to this reality.

We're pretty sure they will, and we'll have more details on that for you soon...

i understand they gloss over a lot of stuff to achieve a certain comedic effect, but this one didnt really work for me. i loved chadwick bosemans perfomance and did get teary eyed at the note at the end.

Loved this episode.
The changes felt drastic enough and not just a recap of the events it’s based on. Missing Chadwick!!

I loved the episode for the most part (Chadwick was amazing as space T'challa!) but drinking buddy Thanos just completely pulled me out of it. I know the show is going for a sillier tone, which I can appreciate, but this was just too much. I don't think that even in the eternity of the multiverse, there would be any chance of this ever happening.
Thanos was literally ready to commit universal omnicide just to prove his point and T'challa just convinced him otherwise? And then he goes "I'm a big enough man to admit when I'm wrong"... what the Flerken?

And even if he did, I'm pretty sure he would have other stuff to do than to hang out with a bunch of pirates at a bar. And noone felt even a little bit uncomfortable near this super powerfull intergalactic terrorist warlord? Why is he not in prison? And what about the Black Order? Weren't they like his children? How did they fight each otehr to the death and didn't even realize the weirdness of this. And how did they turn from self-appointed saviors of the universe to just some... thugs?

I know this is all probably supposed to be the joke here, but it really didn't work for me. Thanos didn't even really serve a purpose in the story. It was just there for the sake of it, but totally pulled me out of the immersion and it felt like it required work to still enjoy the episode otherwise. (Which I did, though.)

I enjoyed this one quite a bit, but it demands that you forget what you know about these characters from the movies a bit. Like, come on, there's no way Thanos would be talked out of his plans. If Gamora couldn't do it, T'Challa wouldn't either. Also, Star-Lord is a nickname Meredith Quill gave to Peter, and he used as his outlaw name, so why is T'Challa called that?

But yeah, being animated and not really connected to the movies (I don't think it will, anyway, maybe some cameos?), I think I can excuse some of those inconsistencies. I thought this one was a lot better than the first one, although some parts still feel undercooked because of the short length.

@ClipClop - You really don't know what the concept of 'What If' is.

@Roodi - no, you CLEARLY dont. yondus goons messing up a gig cant somehow alter thanos personality. like, suddenly he can be talked out of his madness. and they dont even bother to show the scene cuz they know how far they are stretching it. you like it - fine. but dude, that doesnt make you smarter than anyone else.

@rebellion - No. you’re missing the point still. Rewatch the first episode. There are moments that cause the timeline to verge away from “the sacred timeline”, but the universe as a whole is still different. Not everything and everyone are exactly the same.

@Armageddon26 - no, you are doing some seriously impressive mental gymnastics to justify bad writing.

@rebellion - That’s a literal fact based on the first episode lol. Crazy how Red Skull’s stop in Tonsberg is an entirely different scene despite it having nothing to do with what caused the branch.
Stop watching the show if the concept of it bothers you so much 😂

I don't understand why T'challa called himself Star-Lord. Quill called himself that because it was his mom's nickname for him. (Although it was hilarious how Korath immediately recognized him, unlike in the main timeline. Man, Quill keeps being the butt of the joke. XD)

Also, I think it would have been a better ending if Yondu and T'Challa really had fallen out, because that would have been exactly the opposite of their story in the main timeline.

Also also... how come noone in Yondu's crew wanted to eat T'challa? What, they thought Quill looked delicious but not T'challa? Is that because he's black? Sounds discriminating! All races taste the same!!! ...I would assume.
Roodi
Roodi - 8/18/2021, 3:40 AM
LMFAO.

That whole "eat you" shtick was just a running joke the Ravagers pulled on Quill because it was funny. It wasn't a real situation. You really made it about race. Damn.

I appreciated the Thanos joke, and it reminded me of all of the villains who had stints as heroes and how awkward it would be as a reader from the past when they were raving madmen to jump right into the middle of their reformed periods. Still, it felt like an ongoing joke that kept this universe from having any real weight. I might have preferred a more grim Thanos who nevertheless had pledged to try things T’Challa’s way.

The Watcher literally says this is one out of an infinite potential realities. So why are people moaning about what happens in them? You telling me out of a billion realities Thanos might not change his mind in one of them? Dont get too bogged down with the series its just a bit of animated fun. RIP Tchalla

@Rybaman - imagine being upset the giant purple alien man from another universe isn’t “realistic” in his actions. Just enjoy the ride

@ShimmyShimmyYA - imagine being upset about a minor issues some people have about a cartoon episode with a giant purple alien man from another universe.
malschla
malschla - 8/18/2021, 5:19 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - There is a difference between "realistic" and "consistent." As others have said... it's find that Thanos changed, but glossing over that is pretty lazy. The whole point of What If is that one, small tweak can cause massive changes. It's about cause/effect. The fun of these shows is the HOW. On that one, it fell short.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 8/18/2021, 6:15 AM
@malschla - the show is 30 minutes long explain to me how they’re gonna fit all of that in. That’s one of the massive changes thanos is good now, I honestly think if people on this site wrote movies they’d all be as long as ZSJL because you guys want to show and explain literally EVERYTHING that’s not how it works
malschla
malschla - 8/18/2021, 2:11 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - That's fine. I don't *expect* them to explain every *little* thing... but that aspect (Thanos is now good because somebody talked to him) is a MASSIVE pill to swallow. This isn't a silly thing like "why is he also called Star-Lord?"(which, by the way, I think is a simple answer and doesn't bother me at all). This is a huge change, and it was waved away with a lazy joke because the writers didn't have a good answer. I'm completely fine with Thanos turning a new leaf, but you have to give a better answer than "somebody talked to him." Nobody else thought of that? Seriously? Is that what they expect us to believe? Only T'Challa had the magic words? Come on...
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 8/18/2021, 3:00 PM
@malschla - in this universe yes. Does that mean in the main McU it would’ve worked ?No. clearly the thanos of that universe is more easily persuaded than his main universe counterpart and thats ok, what you’re arguing would make more sense if it was main thanos we’re talking about but this another universe. Just like we have that episode coming up with killmonger being friends with stark which clearly would’ve never happened in main mcu based on how main Killmonger thinks
malschla
malschla - 8/18/2021, 8:17 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Again, listen to the Watcher in the voiceover. They specifically set these up as “if only one thing changed, what happens after that change.” They way you’re explaining it is “What If… Tchalla was a star lord AND a bunch of other things we aren’t going to mention are also fundamentally different”
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 8/18/2021, 3:38 AM
that was a lot of fun, until the "dedicated to Chadwick" part, then it hit me again *sobs*
anyway, that was utterly bizarre, specially seeing Thanos as a kind of chaotic good guy, it really made me let out an audible "WHAT THE F*CK?!" when he showed up all buddy buddy with the Ravagers.
yeah, there are some "don't think too hard about it" moments like the fact that T'challa also calls himself "Star-Lord" despite that was something Peter's mom call him, but hey, maybe she got it from Ego in the first place so, who knows, maybe "something-Lord" is a thing in the galaxy.
and the Collector has an...interesting set of weapons, to say the least. so he killed Korg, Hela and Cap? damn.
