Jon Favreau and Smallville duo Al Gough and Miles Millar will produce the show, which is based on the 20-strong series of novels (there has been one graphic novel also - The Dark Wraith Of Shannara - published back in 2008) in Terry Brooks' Shannara saga. The story is set after the destruction of our civilization in the "great wars", with the world reverting to a medieval state and magic re-emerging. Many of the protagonists in the story are descended from the Eleven noble family of Shannara.

Apparently the TV show will begin by adapting the second novel in the series, The Elfstones Of Shannara. The first two episodes will be directed by TMNT's Jonathan Liebesman.

I've never read any of the books, but I'll be surprised if MTV doesn't shit all over them.

As much as I'd love to hate on MTV they did turn the campy Teen Wolf movies into a badass and one of my favorite tv shows on tv. Also Manu Bennet is in this, so I'm definitely giving it a shot.

Wow that footage was nice. The sets and vfx looks amazing for tv, that's not Hbo, Showtime, or Stars.

Terry Brooks is fantastic.... He's a little like the a mesh of Terry Gilliam and Tolkien....but different. I hope there is a decent budget for this. I've enjoyed the movies they've made base don his other books but the budgets were so low it was sad.

Sorry, no movie was ever produced based on any of his works. This is the first thing to be filmed. Not sure what you're thinking of.

I really liked these books as a kid. Hope they do them justice.

The Sword of Shannara was actually the first fantasy novels I've ever read. I was a bit hesitant (and still am a bit) when I heard that MTV was doing this, but I will say that the production value, the Shannara landmarks and constructs look absolutely amazing. As for that matter goes and for the small bit of acting I've seen, it's looking pretty damn promising.

It's annoying that some say Fantasy authors always rip off Tolkien.
So nobody should write Fantasy / Elves / Magic stories because it's not original,blah..blah..blah.
Just be happy this stuff is getting made. Very, very rare are the unique creations anymore.
It may be good & you can enjoy it or it could suck & you don't have to watch & it will bs as if it never existed.

Looks pretty good for MTV, although it's a shame they have spoiled one of the books more interesting reveals in the first trailer.

A shiny Elfstone to anyone who knows what I'm talking about :)

I doubt I'll remember it as a show.

Its on MTV, so I'm sure it will look pretty, but have angsty-drama to cater to the 12 year olds who still watch the channel lol

I think I was probably too old when I started reading Shannara, actually I'm pretty certain I was as it really just seemed a lame LOTR rip off. I would have enjoyed it much younger when I was reading Dragonlance and all those Forgotten realms books. Having said that the trailer here looks interesting although I expect Allanon isn't going to be the physically towering figure he was in the novels although Manu still can project an aura. I'll be checking it out looks certainly worth a try.

I think the size of allanon isn't as much of an issue as his fully-exposed head and snazzy haircut. Normally I'm not a source material zealot but much of his character was rooted in his mysterious nature and hidden agenda. I feel like the omnipresent hood and cloak were part of that mystery.

I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the trailer. Much better than I expected, even though I planned on watching due to my love of the books. Just started reading them over for about the fourth or fifth time now. It's been about 10 years since I have last read the first trilogy.

Poor man's GoT with a l'il LOTR feel to it.

MTV is just trying to cash in on someone else's success. Like anything else on MTV, this too will fail.

Yes, while Manu will be an awesome Allanon I hope, I am more concerned that Terry Brooks sold out his book for $$$$$$$ instead of integrity to the story...Just to start I see NO ROBES on Druids...Is this the Book of Eli version...Everyone in post-apocalyptic clothing and gear...? I expect Druids to be in Black Robes, or at least an outer robe. Allanon is 7' tall,..Manu Bennett is 5'11" tall, maybe 6' Even the Shannara novels have showed a lack of consistency or quality since the Death of Walker...Unfortunately It appears that Mr. Brooks has joined the ranks of those who sell out...Does he need the staff for Druid's Fire, or does he still have Druid's Fire that he can shoot from his hands like a spell, or is it only in the staff that he has it.....Disappointing All The Way Around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a LOTR ripoff, they admitted that, which is why they are doing this book instead of the first stories. I have no problem with people enjoying both but it is what it is and at least they have the balls to admit it (even if die hard fans don't).
