HEROES REBORN Creator Reveals The Death Of A Major Original Character

Despite starting afresh, Heroes Reborn has brought back plenty of familiar faces. The show's creator explained the reasons for their return, as well as confirming one character who won't be back... because they're dead. Check it out, but be wary of SPOILERS...

Over the last few months, we've seen a whole host of familiar faces board NBC's Heroes Reborn revival. Jack Coleman ('Noah Bennet'), Masi Oka ('Hiro Nakumura') and Greg Grunberg ('Matt Parkman') are just a few of the names set to return this fall. Speaking at the TCA press tour (via EW), the show's creator Tim Kring explained what factors determined which characters would be back.

"Some of the people, some of the actors, did not have the availability because they were involved in other things," Kring revealed. Despite this though, he claimed the decision to bring back certain alums was almost always story-driven. "The story was
really the thing that dictated who would come back," he continued, adding that the audience "caring about new characters is just as important as having former cast in the show."

Arguably, out of all the original cast not set to return, Hayden Panettiere's 'Claire Bennet' is the most notable absence. Kring revealed why she wouldn't be back. "In the real of the story, [Claire] died a year prior to our story started," he confessed -seemingly referring to the terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas that drove people with abilities into hiding, and set off the events in Heroes Reborn.

However, it's clear Claire's left a lasting legacy, after revealing her powers to the world in the Heroes series finale. Five years on from that moment, "the world has become a very different place," Kring claimed, "It was almost an obligatory baton pass to where we needed to go from there... This is not the fifth season, this is actually the 10th season as if there were seasons in-between. I had always wanted to tell the story of when the world discovers these people."

Heroes Reborn premieres with a two-hour special on Thursday, September 24 on NBC.

Wait what? If I remember correctly, Claire couldn't die, right? Isn't that like her power?

I wasn't even planning on watching this, but I saw the episode zero prequel the other day and it was amazing. I have to tune in now.

@nilzzz she could die, it just took a lot of work. The first season was all about saving her from Syler. "Save the cheerleader, save the world." This show was really good the first two seasons, then went downhill after the writers strike. I really hope they get back to what made the show work in the first place, especially because it is coming out now, when superhero movies and tv shows have taken off.

Watch the show and you'll see how she dies...

Also, im really digging this soft reboot now. Its the story you remember, but with a fresh look and a new perspective with new and old faces.

...whether they execute it well enough is another question entirely

No idea why people think Claire is unkillable. They literally went over this heaps of times.... All her powers allow her to do is heal. If her "sweet spot" in the brain is damaged then shes dead. Or if you cut her head off.

Nooo not claire !! lol actually looking forward to seeing Noah Gray-Cabey's Micah being the shows main. Have to admit going to miss Ali Larter the most.

Okay that is just bullshit. Sylar opened her head and even told her that she couldn't die. She was the whole point of Noah's character. Such horse shit. I really don't like her as a character, but damnit she was hot and was instrumental to the show.

Good.
The characters got way too convuluted and unlikeable as the series progressed.
No Sylar, Peter and Claire is perfect.
They were the main focus basically and we've seen enough of them.

This new revamp of Heroes needs to focus on brand new characters with brand new stories to tell,
sure sprinkle SOME old cast members but don't use them too much.

Claire can die. Her healing is stopped if the brain is damaged. That's why Peter temporarily "died" in the first season since Sylar shoved a piece of glass through his skull where his brain is. The process how Sylar copies powers has him look at the brain and see "how it ticks", he never damaged Claire's brain. She's was even still alive in the original timeline where Sylar did take her power and became president.

@brahbrah

those were claire's powers originally. but sylar went poking around and her powers got even stronger. there was no sweet spot anymore.
brahbrah
brahbrah - 8/14/2015, 9:46 AM
@royroy

No. All Sylar changed was that his finger snooping caused her to stop feeling pain. Her ability and Adam Monroe's are the same.

Adam confirms it himself when Peter almost had his head blasted off with a shotgun....
"There's no coming back from that one".

Im really hoping for at least a Peter reference. Same with Sylar, you cant do a new season and not bring them up at some point

@brahbrah

sylar said "i couldn't kill you even if i tried" and his ability is to literally understand everything he touches.

he was in her head,he knew what her power could do.

@royroy

Sylar was able to change the spot due to his shapeshifting ability.
That has nothing to do with the accelerated healing one.

The only thing that changed after Sylar poked around her head is that she couldn't feel anything, and that was most likely all psychological.

Like @brahbrah said, there's no coming back from a shotgun blasting through one's brains.
It's probably possible in theory to reattach a decapitated head, and if Hayden ever gets the chance to reclaim her role as Claire in this series, they'll probably use that to bring her back.

Right now we can assume that Clair has been decapitated or has a foreign object stuck to the back of her head and no one knows where she is.

That's some dark shit right there...
brahbrah
brahbrah - 8/14/2015, 10:00 AM
@royroy

It doesnt matter what Sylar said. Sylar even told Danko in Fugitives that he would've been killed if he hadn't moved the sweet spot.

Adam Monroe and Claude have both said the same thing. Specifically Claude said to Peter that a regenerator can be killed by getting the head cut off.

You see this in Angelas dream of the future when Knox kills Claire by ripping her head off.

I love this concept and show. Everything he says wreaks of potential flashbacks with the old characters..."it's actually the 10th season..." that leAves so open to explore the other years and anyone who watched Heores, knows that they love to play the time game.

There's a lot more info out there for anyone who wants to dig.

This info is kinda old.

There's going to be a bunch of multimedia event type tie-ins. Two videogames, six e-books, apps, etc. One ebook explains how she died, etc.

Lots of spoilers/details here:

Compared to all the other superhero tv shows on the air right now - Arrow, Flash, Agents of SHIELD, Peggy Carter, Daredevil - they will be nothing compared to Heroes Reborn. You can just see the dark magnificence in the trailers and prequels.

I'm pissed about Claire not coming back, mostly in terms of the narrative. I hated the actress - she was hot, but damn annoying. But in terms of the narrative, Bennett's whole character in the entire show was about going through hell to keep his daughter hidden from the world and to let her live a normal life - to keep her safe.

Then she reveals herself to the world. 'Breaking my heart' as Bennett says himself. Now we know long later, that she dies due to a terrorist attack - indirectly influenced by herself.

How the hell is Bennett going to deal with all this? I mean for God sake Claire, he gave away everything in his life - his marriage, his real son, his home, his life - just to keep you safe. And now you've gotten yourself killed. Goddamnit.

Even when I haven't watched the show for years, and even when Claire is dead, she still finds a way to annoy me. Damn.
