Over the last few months, we've seen a whole host of familiar faces board NBC's Heroes Reborn revival. Jack Coleman ('Noah Bennet'), Masi Oka ('Hiro Nakumura') and Greg Grunberg ('Matt Parkman') are just a few of the names set to return this fall. Speaking at the TCA press tour (via EW), the show's creator Tim Kring explained what factors determined which characters would be back.
"Some of the people, some of the actors, did not have the availability because they were involved in other things," Kring revealed. Despite this though, he claimed the decision to bring back certain alums was almost always story-driven. "The story was really the thing that dictated who would come back," he continued, adding that the audience "caring about new characters is just as important as having former cast in the show."
Arguably, out of all the original cast not set to return, Hayden Panettiere's 'Claire Bennet' is the most notable absence. Kring revealed why she wouldn't be back. "In the real of the story, [Claire] died a year prior to our story started," he confessed -seemingly referring to the terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas that drove people with abilities into hiding, and set off the events in Heroes Reborn.
However, it's clear Claire's left a lasting legacy, after revealing her powers to the world in the Heroes series finale. Five years on from that moment, "the world has become a very different place," Kring claimed, "It was almost an obligatory baton pass to where we needed to go from there... This is not the fifth season, this is actually the 10th season as if there were seasons in-between. I had always wanted to tell the story of when the world discovers these people."
Heroes Reborn premieres with a two-hour special on Thursday, September 24 on NBC.
