ARMY OF THE DEAD Director Zack Snyder Explains Why He Decided To Introduce A Zombie [SPOILER]

Army of the Dead made some unusual choices when it came to the established zombie mythology, and in a new interview, director Zack Snyder explains why he decided to introduce an undead [spoiler]...

Netflix's Army of the Dead clearly set out to subvert the established zombie "rules" in some unexpected ways, but not everyone was on board with the more out-there alterations.

While the movie did include the classic "shamblers," the Las Vengeance crew also had to deal with the faster, more intelligent "alphas." These lethal creatures were directly linked to Zeus, who may or may not have been alien in origin, and, as we'd soon find out in graphic detail, was able to procreate.

"I believe that some zombie love happened, some sweet zombie lovemaking. I don't know if it was sweet. It was probably pretty aggressive," Snyder explained to Esquire when asked about the introduction of a zombie fetus. "My theory is that the zombies in our movie are working toward not needing a human host to procreate their species, if you will. That's the ultimate evolution. They're like a better us. I think that's the fun genre part of it. They're no longer destroying their environment. They're not fighting with each other. They're less bad for everybody. They're less toxic. Unless you cross them, and then, well, it's not that good."

Some feel that having the zombies evolve into a completely different race kind of misses the point (they're supposed to mirror/represent society), but there's no denying that giving them the ability to reproduce does open the door to some intriguing possibilities.

"We had a hell of a lot of fun asking ourselves all those questions. Even the zombie baby was a thing that we all debated for a while," Snyder added. "But as far as I was concerned, the zombie baby was cool for a variety of reasons, and one of them was that it tests you, it pushes you. You think you know what the genre is."

What did you guys make of Army of the Dead's approach to zombies? Drop us a comment down below.

Well, he had a zombie baby in his first film ('Dawn of the Dead' for the uneducated)...

Glad to see your ideas are evolving, Snyder 🙄

@SKetCH - Well, yes... but that was an already pregnant woman's baby being turned when she was, this was two zombies procreating.

@RorMachine -

I understand, but knowing Snyder's character (and no, I don't know him pErSoNaLlY - before the smartasses jump in), he's such a bro, he's had that "duuuude, a zombie baby would be soooo cooool" idea that he can't let go of.

"Biting tigers is TIGHT" ... 😅😅😅😅
It's THIS "duuuude" mindset Snyder has, that was so on point.

I liked this better than the one in Dawn of the Dead. That one never really sat right with me but the idea of the zombies evolving into a whole new species and having their own culture was cool to me in this one

@Ha1frican - I don't know. I can the one in Dawn of the Dead making much more sense. Its a fetus. Everything the mother does effects the baby. So her passing the virus on to her unborn baby makes sense.

This? How the hell does a dead body have successful intercourse? They're bodily functions shouldn't work.

But I guess these zombies are different. Some amount of their bodies obviously stay alive and intact.

@CorndogBurglar - I get what you’re saying but also on the same token I feel like if you start to get to that level of critical thinking or biology with zombies in general it all falls apart yknow? Like why can they move at all wouldnt riggor mortis set in? At a certain point if you think about it for long enough the whole concept falls apart so I try not to go too deep into it and just go with the rules the universe sets for what does and doesn’t work lol

@Ha1frican - Yeah for sure. I always thought rigor mortis was tenporary though and a dead body would end up loosening up again, so that always explained that for me, unless I'm wrong lol.

I really wish they would make a faithful World War Z movie. That book had slow zombies that basically took over most of the world, but then humans ended up beating them because of things we're talking about right here. After so many months the zombies decayed to a point that they couldn't walk, and then eventually died. And the ones that were still left would get real stiff in cold weather, so the humans just waited until the dead of winter, formed big militias, and went out killing every zombie they came across. And they out up mo fight because they were heavily decayed and frozen by then.

They basically just waited it out, which is what I feel would really happen.

@CorndogBurglar - I’d love to see that, the zombie mass movement of the movie was cool but I’ve heard overall the book was far more interesting

@Ha1frican - Lol yeah. If the movie would have been called anything else I wod have enjoyed it. But they really butchered the book pretty horribly.

I don’t know where all the praise for this movie is coming from. I finished it last night and thought it was [frick]ing stupid.

@TexasAvenger - Lol where's the praise you're seeing? It's a giant pile of loose stools. The movie could have been over within 5 minutes of them entering Vegas. Everything after that is nonsensical nonsense.

I wonder if the scene he planned where a decayed zombie dick (with a bite missing even) graces the screen was a zombie love-making scene.

The next step (next?) in evolution is kinda cool though. Wish they dived even more into that with Tanaka's zombie army idea. Might be cool to see superhuman (human?) soldier, kinda like the doctor guy in Days Gone.
