Fans of the original Cowboy Bebop anime were surprised and disappointed when Radical Ed wasn't announced as being part of the main cast of Netflix's live-action adaptation, but the character does actually appear in the final episode.

The streamer officially introduced newcomer Eden Perkins as Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivruski IV last week, and the non-binary actor has now expressed their excitement at getting to bring life to the hacker extraordinaire in the official Cowboy Bebop: Unlocked after show.

Skip to the 24:00 mark to find out what Perkins had to say.

The video also includes interview snippets with showrunner Andre Nemec, who explained why Ed only has a very minor role in the first season.

"All we wanted was for Ed to make an appearance on Cowboy Bebop," he said. "You know, Ed doesn't show up until the ninth episode of the anime. So it wasn't like Ed is a core member of the Bebop crew from gate in the anime, and it was important to spend enough time with these characters in order to really understand them and get traction."

Spoilers for the Cowboy Bebop finale ahead.

In the last episode, "Supernova Symphony," Ed and Ein find Spike passed out in an alley, where the rather excitable teen tells the forlorn bounty hunter that they have a dangerous job for him which involves tracking down someone known as the Butterfly Man (we're going to assume this is actually Vincent Volaju).

I finished it this morning and…yikes

In regards to Ed. This is why certain things should only stay as an anime...not all anime expressions and energy doesn't work in live action. Yes, this actor made an effort to capture the energy of Ed but this looks like a scene from a Spy Kids film. The way the scene is framed and slapped together with jumpcuts makes it seem like lazy town. Translating the more outlandish anime characters is tough.

I think it’s TOO accurate. Seeing it live seems off, like you know the energy is acted, and the charms not the same.

@AmazingFILMporg - a lot of the time it felt like a stage play and a fan film. There was this uncomfortable energy to it.
