THE WITCHER Executive Producer Debunks Multiverse Theory And Teases Story Explanation For Geralt Recasting

We may finally have an explanation for how Henry Cavill's Geralt of Rivia will soon look like Liam Hemsworth, as one of The Witcher producers has debunked a key theory and teased another possibility...

Season 4 of The Witcher will see Liam Hemsworth take over the role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill. The show's third batch of episodes wrapped up on something of an open-ended note and failed to offer so much as a single hint about how the witcher's face will change.

In an interview translated by Redanian Intelligence (via SFFGazette.com), executive producer Tomek Baginski elaborated on his previous remarks that the recasting with be lore-accurate, beginning by debunking theories the Multiverse will come into play.

While that concept is present in The Witcher books - it's dubbed the Spheres - all those different worlds are totally different, meaning there's only one Geralt instead of countless alternate versions with different faces.

"Many book readers forget what Andrzej Sapkowski did in the fifth volume of the saga," Baginsk says. "For me, this is one of the most important things in the whole story. I’m not talking about specific events, but the narrative framework that was introduced in this book."

"Suddenly, at the beginning of the book, we learn that everything we’ve read so far might not have been true. And this cannot be compared with, for example, the currently popular concept of the multiverse, where out of nowhere there are many different realities."

In that fifth book, there are a few passages set a hundred years after Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer's story has ended revealing that various historians have passed their knowledge down, meaning we can't be sure what, if anything, we've previously read is 100% accurate.

As Baginski puts it, "Maybe Ciri had a different eye color, was a different character, and these events looked different from the point of view of the elves...I see what’s happening among the fans and how rigidly they interpret what The Witcher is. But the truth is, the ways of interpretation can vary widely."

"I believe that what has been planned for Season 4 is consistent with the books. But I might interpret it differently than someone who can’t get over the fact that Geralt’s face has changed. I really like the idea for the opening of Season 4, but whether the audience will like it, we’ll see."

We'd bet on someone reflecting on the events of The Witcher, only to remember Geralt's appearance differently. As a means of replacing Cavill with Hemsworth, it's a simple and effective approach, and one it's hard to imagine fans being overly bothered by.

We'll see what happens, but for now, chime in with your thoughts in the comments section below.

The show is called The Witcher and they focus too much on the female leads, that's why I stopped watching.

@marvel72 - I felt that wasn't the case at all. But maybe I was too distracted by the overall boeing writing. Especially the Aratuza episode felt like it had twists just for the sake of having twists.

@OriginalGusto1 - No I don't but when a show is called The Witcher he should be the main focus of the show, the shows writers slowly pushed him into just a side character.

@marvel72 - but you admitedly dont watch the show so you don't actually know that to be true. Those of us who do watch the show don't feel that way.

@Itwasme - bro it's not even the women. The show is literally about anyone but the witcher. Season 1 got me to read the books and they're awesome. S1 and S2 shouldve been about Geralt, Jaskier and Yennefer only. The books are by no means literature masterpieces and yet they still managed to f.ck it up.

Too much to hope for... But would be slick if they re filmed the last episode of S3 with Hemsworth and replaced it without advertising. Could enforce the stand that things are remembered differently.

What happened to actors just being recast without a huge explanation

Origame

@tylerzero - thats a perfect example. I know we joke on the perlmutter quote of people not noticing the difference, but he had a point. No one cared really.
TheLight
TheLight - 8/26/2023, 4:55 PM
@LeBronStan - Been wondering that myself for years. Now all of a sudden, actors that portray characters have to be the ONLY core personas and no one else is permitted to change that even if its necessary.

Look at the results of Wakanda Forever. And I know by even mentioning it people will come gunning for me,

Hoot3
Hoot3 - 8/26/2023, 5:20 PM
@Origame - Nobody cared because Cheadle is a good actor. But people definitely noticed the difference. Terrance Howard and Don Cheadle look nothing alike. No credit to Perlmutter for that one.
Origame
Origame - 8/26/2023, 5:33 PM
@Hoot3 - I get that. But the point is no one cares enough to consider it a genuine problem. They'll suspend their disbelief when it comes to seeing them as the same character, which in film making is the same as not seeing the difference.
Taonrey
Taonrey - 8/26/2023, 9:39 PM
@TheLight - what results? It was just as good as the first movie. Decent two acts with a bad third one.
TheLight
TheLight - 8/27/2023, 9:00 AM
@Taonrey - *sighs*

The point I'm making is that it should've continued to tell the story of T'Challa as the Black Panther by recasting, instead of catering to the stubborn crowd that were afraid of Chadwick being replaced in both their minds and hearts. T'Challa in the comics has had alot of adventures that I would've loved to see in the MCU.

Multiverse or not, Hemsworth isn't remotely as charismatic as Cavill.
Origame

In other words, fan fiction. Which is exactly what you've been doing with this series since day one.

None of you guys give two sh!ts about this franchise. You just are jealous you can't come up with a story that has captivated audiences the way the Witcher did, so you take this franchise in an attempt to get that audience without earning it. And when people rejected it, you lampshaded the issue, insulting people who couldn't accept it, and forced out people like cavill who actually cared about the property.

It's so hard to believe we're this far away from the original lord of the ring trilogy, where Peter Jackson respected the source material so much that he had to hold himself back from injecting his own ideals and instead preserving the ideals of Tolkien and what he included.

Hollywood needs to remember they would be nowhere without these classic franchises and the fans who made them classic in the first place

I hate this attitude that a recasting needs an in-universe explanation. Just recast and move on like nothing has changed.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 8/26/2023, 5:35 PM
I don't mind a recast without explanation, but it would be nice to get some solo adventures (maybe some of the as of yet unadepted stories from the first books) so I can get used to Hemsworth before they drop him in the bigger story.

I never even got around to season 3. I heard it was horrible. They had so many good things going after season 1 and they squandered all of it. This could have been such an amazing show.

Way to put down Witcher fans. That’s one way to get everyone to accept that Geralt will be way skinnier and different in the face.

I watched season 1 and there were some great episodes and some bad ones.
I didn't care for the Ciri storyline, but the one with the black sorceress was worse.
The Geralt stories were more interesting, but the rest dragged them down.
