Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, has taken to Twitter today to confirm that he is transgender. The actor has changed his name to Elliot and made it clear that his pronouns are he/they.
"I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey," the Umbrella Academy star says in the Twitter post below. "I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I’ve been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community. Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place."
Nick Adams, GLAAD's Director of Transgender Media, issued a follow-up statement reading:
"Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on-screen, and has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people. He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people. All transgender people deserve the chance to be ourselves and to be accepted for who we are. We celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page today."
Best known for roles in Juno, X-Men: The Last Stand, Inception, and Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, Page now joins a handful of Hollywood stars who have decided to come out as trans.
It's unclear what, if any, effect this will have on Page's female character in The Umbrella Academy (which has been renewed for a third season).
The actor will likely talk more about this decision in the weeks to come, so we'll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more. For now, we'd obviously like to extend our support to Page.
