ANDOR Was Reportedly Lucasfilm's Most Expensive STAR WARS TV Series Yet With Massive $250 Million Budget

Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has revealed a few new details about the show's upcoming second season, while it's also been confirmed that the first season cost more than any other Star Wars TV series...

Cameras are still rolling on Andor season 2, and while showrunner Tony Gilroy is no longer able to write the series (he maintains that the scripts were finished prior to the WGA strike beginning), he has shared some new details in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com).

After playing around with various genres during the first 12 episodes, it sounds like season 2's overall feel will differ significantly when the show returns next year.

"It’s not as clearly delineated in terms of genres, but it’s more clearly delineated in that each block of three episodes will be separated by a yearlong gap," he explains. "So they’re really stand-alone, and in many cases take place over one, two or three days."

The trade goes on to reveal that, with a $250 million budget, Andor is actually the most expensive Star Wars TV show ever made. That figure makes it pricier than The Mandalorian's first season - which cost roughly $100 million - and even the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi and the upcoming Skeleton Crew

We'd assume the decision to shoot practical locations was a big part of that, especially as Andor doesn't exactly feature much in the way of splashy space battles and lightsaber duels...which, in large part, is what makes it so great.

Reflecting on being given that financial freedom, Gilroy said: "We got lucky making this during the gold rush a few years ago. A lot of people now have cold feet, and you can’t do this show inexpensively."

"I’m just so relieved at the reaction because we were making this huge, obscure thing and we knew it was crazy. Like, ‘Is this too much? Have we gone too far?’ There were no focus groups or test audiences. Now it will be good if we can stick the landing and go out strong."

Andor season 2 is still expected to premiere on Disney+ sometime in August 2024.

Duh! It actually relies more on P R A C T I C A L effects and R E A L locations rather than CGI and Volume.

The money was there on the screen, especially when compared to something like Kenobi. Just a shame their priorities got so screwed up. Same issue with Marvel; they loaded the shotgun too quickly, and then burned out on the buckshot before they could get to the big hitters.

@RealTurner - I love the show but if low viewership is true it's not surprising. No one cares about Cassian Andorn

Goes to add to my theory that Kathleen Kennedy is crushing hard on Diego Luna lol.
She was so quick to sign his contracts first.

Don’t mind the budget being so high, Disney can afford it. But it’s still weird how their other stuff like Obi-Wan and Boba Fett has lower budgets despite being more anticipated.

And it was the best looking and overall BEST SW show we've gotten so far. Stop being lazy, keep the practical aspect. They can't rush things anymore, we see the shit on the wall bruhhh

It was obvious when watching it. This didn’t look like all digit nonsense like the other shows. Practical sets and real locations make a huge difference.

$250,000,000 for a show so boring , I watched every episode hoping it would get better and just didn’t. I truly believe their gonna make a full episode of Andbore , with Andsnore just brushing his teeth in the bathroom… Just my 2 cents. I’m sure some of you guys liked this show…

Make Tony Gilroy in charge of Star Wars TV shows. Hell, make him in charge of the films too.

Kenobi should've been the one most expensive and most amazing storytelling story of them all... but instead got a cheap one hijacked by a lame Reva's storyline..

Well it looked great, and was written great, and was great all around. If the second season is as great, it deserves a budget like that.
