While they're never particularly effective at their job, it goes without saying that Stormtroopers are an iconic part of the Star Wars franchise. Trailers for Obi-Wan Kenobi have confirmed that we'll see more of the Empire's foot soldiers in the Disney+ show, and it sounds like they'll be given a major, long-overdue addition over the course of this highly anticipated six-part limited series.
During an interview with THR (via SFFGazette.com), Obi-Wan Kenobi composer Natalie Holt was asked about working on specific themes for the show's characters, and revealed that the Stormtroopers are finally getting a theme! This would mark the first time in the franchise's history that's been the case.
"John Williams has written the Obi theme, but I did start off trying to write one, to be honest," she explained. "I was writing from Deborah’s instructions and it was interesting. She was like, 'He’s in the desert. He’s lost, he’s been alone.' It’s like anything for his theme would just be small, crumbling, fragmented and thin. Then it would grow as he goes on this journey. That was kind of interesting seeing the place that I arrived at, just for the world and his environment."
"Obviously, there are lots of different characters in the show, and I did also write music themes for planets. In addition, there is a Stormtroopers theme. That’s all I can say right now."
With the combined talents of Holt and Williams, Obi-Wan Kenobi is likely to boast one of the best Star Wars scores we've ever heard. The fact that Stormtroopers have a theme suggests they'll play a significant role in proceedings, though that would make sense if this is Obi-Wan's first exposure to them. He'll have known the suited soldiers as clones, of course, but much has changed since then.
We can't help but wonder if seeing Stormtroopers will bring back traumatic memories for the Jedi Master after he watched the clones turn on his fellow heroes as a result of Order 66.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ with its first two episodes on May 27.
