OBI-WAN KENOBI Director Deborah Chow On Possible Season 2: "There's 10 More Years Before NEW HOPE..."

Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow has weighed in on the show's future, and while she confirms the first season is a singular story, the filmmaker appears to have left the door open to telling more...

Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered on Disney+ last year to much fanfare, and while the series wasn't perfect, it did a great job of filling in some of the gaps between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope

The show even found a way to pit Obi-Wan against Darth Vader, but with another decade between that moment and the fateful day Luke Skywalker found his way to Ben's hut in the desert, there's clearly room for more stories. The question is, are those ever going to be told?

Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) recently spoke to Obi-Wan Kenobi director and executive producer Deborah Chow, and asked if she's planning to head back to this corner of the Galaxy Far, Far Away.

"This was conceived as a limited series; it is closed," the filmmaker confirmed before leaving us with at least a little hope by adding, "There’s 10 more years before New Hope, so never say never."

During the same conversation, Chow reflected on the stresses that making Obi-Wan Kenobi during the pandemic presented. "It was pretty intense," she admits. "Anything with background was always stressful because we had little Leia [Vivien Lyra Blair] running around...we didn’t get shut down."

The full podcast interview is worth checking out, but to go back to those season 2 comments, it's hard to believe it won't happen somewhere down the line.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has made it clear there are no current plans, likely in an effort to temper expectations. However, Star Wars remains a big draw on Disney+, and even with the streamer looking to curb spending, another batch of episodes would surely be a worthwhile expense.

Alternatively, a movie might be fun, but Obi-Wan Kenobi ended in a somewhat definitive fashion and it would be a shame to tell another story just for the sake of it. However, if they can find the right tale to tell, that would be no bad thing.

@bobevanz - thanks for sharing. I will never forgive the hand-held cinematography in the Obi-Wan series during the Vader-Kenobi duel. It was symbolic of the lack of care or affection that was put into the production.

Can we not have Deborah Chow direct it if it happens. Starwars should be exciting not a chore to sit through. So much attention was put on Reva who was just some random made up character for the show when the shows called Obi Wan

@Matchesz - all characters are made up

@AC1 - the point being made is we aren't there for reva because she didn't exist before the show. We're there for obi wan and Vader.

@Matchesz - Let's call it for what it is: Reva added nothing to the script except to satisfy the DEI commissars at Disney that approve all content. She was the least memorable of a series most of us lifelong fans want to forget.

Aside from a few little gripes here and there I loved this series. Having said that, I'm not sure I'd want a follow up unless there was a really solid reason to do it.

The next time we see Obi-Wan chronologically (Rebels?) it's pretty clear he's been alone for a long time so I feel like that does kinda need to be preserved. Having said that, Kenobi ended in a way that did feel like a loose set up for a follow-up.

@AC1 - I agree. Some things need to remain sacred. And having obi live that loner life is part of his character when he shows up in a new hope

He fought maul and dealt with him quickly, and then went back into the shadows. Let's leave it at that.

I would not mind them continuing Revas story though in some way. But don't keep her alive forever like they did ahsoka.

@Vigor - Yeah I kinda agree with all of that. I think Reva's arc was handled a little clumsily but it had potential and Moses Ingram did her best with the material and was working with, and it definitely felt like it was left open-ended so we could catch up with her somewhere down the line.

If we were to see Obi-Wan again one of the few ways I think I could see it working is if we actually followed Reva doing her thing, on her path to redemption, and maybe visiting Obi-Wan on Tatooine to seek out his advice and to maybe keep him in the loop with what's going on in the Galaxy, maybe keep him informed about the Rebellion, etc.

Basically make sure he's still on Tatooine, mostly alone, occasionally gets updates on other goings on but is very much taking a back seat. Maybe get a bit of insight into his training with Qui-Gon too but don't have him going on another planet-hopping adventure.

Wow. I'm genuinely surprised she knew that much about the continuity to say there's 10 more years.

Everything done in obi wan felt like someone who saw the 6 original movies once years ago then built a sequel/prequel from that loose memory.

Lmao. I love the conviction of Deborah Chow's answer.

"This was conceived as a limited series; it is closed," the filmmaker confirmed before leaving us with at least a little hope by adding, "There’s 10 more years before New Hope, so never say never."

She starts out so definitive, and then U-Turns on herself real quick.

It's like an alcoholic saying "Nope! I quit drinking, I'm done. But you never know. I still have a lot of life left to live."

@CorndogBurglar - A bettr question would be why Obi-Wan turned out the way it did and Ahsoka looks like fire. I guess there were to many details to fill in as opposed to Ahsoka having Rebels to draw on a lot more.

“Never say never”

Oh goodie I can’t wait to see a 15-year-old Leia hiding under a green man’s trench coat in plain view of a base full of imperial troops.

That series was horribly written and should have never been made with that ridiculous story;

@TyrantBossMedia - Obi Wan was the last Star Wars content I have watched. It was awful and the last straw for me. Not wasting my valuable time watching garbage anymore, and as long as Kathleen Kennedy is running things, nothing will change zt LucasFilm.

TyrantBossMedia - 5/31/2023, 7:40 AM
@GeneralZod - I did watch season 3 of the Womandalorian and that wasn’t very good.

I was so disappointed by what they did with that and Obi Wan that I’m out, and this coming from a rabid Star Wars fan who had been watching the OT since I was 7 and it was originally released in theaters.

They have damaged the brand so badly that I don’t think there is a way to fix it.
DarthOmega

@TyrantBossMedia - Damn I forgot about that scene. Lol. I was thinking about the scene where a tiny girl outran numerous grown men. Or the awful cinematography. Or the weird shoehorning of Reva. Or the odd choice of makeup for the Inquisitor. Or the choice to not de-age Hayden, or if they did, do such a poor job of it. Or the awkward first fight between Vader and Obi-Wan, or the odd second fight between Vader and Obi-Wan. Or the fact this show did absolutely [frick] all for the character.

We are made to believe that Leia was just pretending not to know who Obi-Wan was in ANH. We are made to believe Obi-Wan would screw up her name in front of the Empire blowing their cover. Sorry for the ranting. I could go on and on about how much this show screwed up.

I will end it by giving it props for getting one thing right. Vader. Not everything worked with him. But the Deepfake voice was excellent. The fight between Vader and Reva was awesome. The fact he was onto Reva the whole time showed he wasn't just a moron (Like Disney loves to do with legacy male characters) Also having a switch between Anakin's voice and Vader's was a nice choice.

The rest of the show was a net negative for the characters and the lore. I hope they don't crap out another season. If they can't help but drag out old characters just to introduce their new boring ass characters then just leave it alone. Set it all in the high republic because I don't care at all about any of those characters or their stories. So if they ruin it, I'd be fine.

@DarthOmega - Your rant is justified.

My biggest problem is with Leia getting to know Kenobi so well.

When he sees her message in Star Wars she says, "General Kenobi, you served my father in the clone wars"
She wouldn't need to say that if she already knew him and he knew her.
She was telling him who she was and implied that she only knew him through her father.

Also, when Kenobi gets killed by Vader on the Death Star she shows absolutely no remorse.
That wouldn't be the case since he saved her life and they got close in the stupid show.

Just more butchery of Star Wars.

@TyrantBossMedia - I agree that it is unfixable. Last week i bought a new glass display case for my home office. I put the Kenner Toys-made Luke Skywalker land-speeder inside as one of my showcased items. My parents would have bought it for me in 1977 when i was 8 or 9. I think it all ended with Mandolorian S2's last episode. The political commissars at Disney have full control over content and that will never change. It was a fun ride while it lasted. I think the same can be said about Marvel Studios.
TyrantBossMedia
TyrantBossMedia - 5/31/2023, 5:22 PM
@GeneralZod - I agree. To be honest they either should have ended The Mandalorian entirely after Season 2 because you aren't going to beat the emotional impact and closure of that finale.
OR
They should have kept the Mandalorian in the wings and off of streaming for about two years while they allowed time for The Book of Boba Fett, but that's where they slide began.
Once Kathleen Kennedy and the merchandising department got involved in that production the journey came apart.
OR
Right after Boba Fett have Mandlorian Season 3 simply be a season long quest to redeem his name and place in the order all culminating with him deciding to walk two paths where he can wear or not wear his helmet.

I agree also, Marvel went too big in Endgame and made it TOO final. Then instead of bringing in the real A-List heroes like the Fantastic Four...they go D List and nobody cares about it.

They’ll never make SW fans happy, and they’ll never stop making them because despite bitching and whinging about every little thing, good or bad, SW fans will never stop watching SW content. So it’ll be a perpetual cycle of constantly complaining fans. Fun.
