OBI-WAN KENOBI: Original Story Plans For The Disney+ TV Series Have Been Revealed

Obi-Wan Kenobi is still coming to Disney+, but not without some big changes to how it was previously set to play out. Now, we have some fresh intel on what the original plan for the TV series was...

Originally, the plan was for Obi-Wan Kenobi to be a movie, but it later transitioned into a TV series, and a change of showrunners has both delayed the show and changed storyline plans.

Now, The Illuminderdi has shared some intel from Lucasfilm's original plans for the show. They've obtained a logline, and it definitely sounds like there were some big similarities to The Mandalorian.

"Tatooine, a desert planet where farmers work hard under the heat of two suns," it begins. "Meanwhile, they try to defend themselves and their loved ones from the marauders Tusken. A planet behind the edge of civilization. And a place where it would be unlikely to find a Jedi master, or an orphan child on whom the future of the entire galaxy weighs on its small shoulders."

It's somewhat vague, but it does sound as if original plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi called for the Jedi Master to protect the young Luke Skywalker in some way, and this lines up with reports that Star Wars Legend character A'Sharad Hett (a Jedi who became a Tusken Raider warlord) was set to appear.

There are definitely signs of some Western tropes here, and that's something we also saw from The Mandalorian, so a change in direction was no doubt necessary. Whereas Joby Harold was previously working on the series, Hossein Amini is now in charge of scripting duties for the show.

What are your thoughts on these original plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi?

I really hope the entire thing doesn’t take place on Tatooine.

@PicolasCage - if it still includes Luke it has too, pretty sure they mention he never left before r2 and 3po showed up

This is enough material for a short film. I have a bad feeling that the conflict of this series will be contrived to inject action into a time in the characters life in which there probably shouldn't be much.

@BIGBMH - hopefully this old man story is more like Logan and less like Star Trek Picard

I say keep it as is. It’s the story that’s been wanting to be told; how Obi Wan looked after Luke. If it’s another western with paternal overtones, it can still be different. How is Obi Wan a different “father” from Mando?

Sounds cool, wonder how Kathleen Kennedy is ruining it right now

@dracula - ah youve already decided you wont like it before it comes out? Thank you for representing the problem with modern fandom as a whole

@Toonstrack - Hey I'm going to give it a shot. If it proves me wrong and turns out great, then i'm happy. At the moment, because of Kennedy's output and the fact that it was her choice to scrap the original plan, I'm not excited for it at all. Considering the only good to come out of disney star wars is Mandalorian, Rogue One and Rebels, id say thats generous. plus the new writer has some pretty crap movie under his belt. If it were any other franchise I would drop it completely. You know can decide for yourself if a movie is worth your time based on who is working on it.
If a movie is by Chris Nolan there is almost a sure thing it will be good, considering he hasnt made a bad movie yet
If a movie is made by M Night Shamalan, there is a very strong chance it will be crap, considering his best film is still 6th sense, and after Signs, its been mostly crap

@dracula - Pretty sure she said the scripts were done... then backtracked, fired the showrunner, and hired her own writer. That does NOT bode well for the show at all.

Dont include Maul, we have most of his timeline and there is no room for him to be there. He was looking for obiwan during rebels

@dracula - they wont. his story with Kenobi plays out in Rebels... unless he lures Kenobi out of hiding for a brief rematch. even then... nah.

The fate of the galaxy was never really on Luke's shoulders. We know that now.
