THE MANDALORIAN "Chapter 5" Takes Us Back To An Iconic Location; Check Out Some New Spoiler Stills

"The Gunslinger" didn't really advance the plot of The Mandalorian, but it did take us back to a familiar planet from Star Wars lore. Read on for details on that and some brand new stills from the episode!

This week's episode of The Mandalorian slowed things down a little with an adventure set on the iconic planet of Tatooine. That's right, we visited the homeworld of characters like Anakin Skywalker, Jabba the Hutt, and, uh, Watto for a Mos Eisley-set tale that didn't feature any noteworthy cameos, but still paid homage to A New Hope and our other visits to the planet.

There were Pit Droids, Stormtrooper helmets impaled on spikes, Tusken Raiders, and even a trip to the "wretched hive of scum and villainy" from A New Hope. There, the Mandalorian came acorss Toro Calican, a wannabe Bounty Hunter who enlisted his help in order to take down a dangerous killer called Fennec (Ming-Na Wen).

Oh, and did we mention that Calican was sitting in the exact same spot as Han Solo in A New Hope?

The duo eventually track Fennec down, but she tells Calican that capturing the Mandalorian will make him a legend (he hopes to join the Guild by taking her in, but guns her down and instead sets off for a confrontation with the show's lead). Needless to say, that doesn't work out too well for him! However, as the episode ends, we see a mysterious figure approach Fennec's lifeless body. There's speculation that this might be Boba Fett, but previoulsy released set photos suggest it's actually Giancarlo Esposito's character.

Disney has also released spoiler stills from the episode, so hit the "View List" button to check them out along with images and concept art from the first four chapters of the show.

Well [frick]ing played Dave Filoni.

Well played.

That was just... exquisite.

Tatooine. Ming-Na. Mos Eisley. Cantina. Tight story. Great characters. More Baby Yoda. Dewbacks.

Jesus. I was fist pumping the air from "Thats MY line"

@globaltravels - Agent May looking sexy as hell as an assassin!!

Great episode with some good humor to it as well. They are really starting to get the Western feel down more and more. I even liked when the bounty meets the mechanic and does a 'Ma,am' with a slight head nod. Well done!

@four20smoke - I really hope she's not dead. I thought she was one of the best new character additions to the show. Totally bad-ass. I could see her pulling a Ventress, and being a sort-of villain but also ally in desperate times. I didn't mind IG-11 getting wasted, or Cara Dune & Nick Nolte being one-off characters (even though they aren't), but this is the first time I REALLY don't want a character to get killed off so quickly.

Toro Calican, the most annoying little shit in the galaxy.

I loved this episode though. A lot better than the last. This format is really refreshing.

Something that I really don't understand (And I think breaks the logic of Star Wars) is tracking fobs. What the hell are they? How can all these bounty hunters find Baby Yoda? We see in AOTC Obi-Wan had to place a tracker on Slave 1 in order to track Jango. So does Baby Yoda have a tracker inside him or something?
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 12/6/2019, 7:23 AM
@Nightwing1015 - the thing with tracking fobs, from what I gather from the first episode, is that they're way less reliable than a regular tracker since it can only tell you how close you are to a certain target, you don't get info on who the person is or what it looks like, unlike those fancier hologram tracker thingies we saw already in the show. Hence his surprise that the 50 year old target he was tasked with retrieving was actually a baby.

@Nightwing1015 - the idea in the show suck
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 12/6/2019, 7:37 AM
@BountyCipher - Well what I mean is it breaks logic of anything. It's completely illogical. How can they track a lifeform without a tracker on it. It just doesn't make sense.
CaptaCornflakes
CaptaCornflakes - 12/6/2019, 7:38 AM
@Nightwing1015 - Because......it has a tracker in it.

Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 12/6/2019, 7:38 AM
@Spidey91 - Yeah but that doesn't really explain anything. How can a fob know when you're close to a target? If the target doesn't have a tracker on them, they can't be tracked. That's how it's always worked in SW.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 12/6/2019, 7:39 AM
@MrLuciass - What has a tracker in it? Baby Yoda? In that case it would make sense. But I wonder why the Mandalorian wouldn't just remove the tracker.
CaptaCornflakes
CaptaCornflakes - 12/6/2019, 7:41 AM
@Nightwing1015 - Because it's inside the baby.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 12/6/2019, 7:43 AM
@MrLuciass - Ok that makes sense. But what about the bounty hunter that was tracked in this episode? Did she have a tracker in her? If so, why doesn't anyone take the tracker out? And who put the tracker inside them?
CaptaCornflakes
CaptaCornflakes - 12/6/2019, 7:54 AM
@Nightwing1015 - Sure why not. And is mando a surgeon?
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 12/6/2019, 8:12 AM
@MrLuciass - Well the first thing I would do if I were Mando is take it to a surgeon and get it removed. The only other plan would be to live the rest of your life on the run.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 12/6/2019, 10:44 AM
@Nightwing1015 - Is it above logic to think that possibly they track their targets via DNA? Because in that case all they would need is a blood sample in order to pick up the scent.
four20smoke
four20smoke - 12/6/2019, 10:51 AM
@Nightwing1015 - i think there is some confusion going on here between a tracker, like someone mentioned was used in AOTC, and the fob thing they are using this show.

From what I gather, the fob is more of a waypoint or last known location device. Its not an exact location of where the target is.

In episode 4 no one knew where they until they made all that racket with taking out the raiders. Thats why Mando made the big deal about findinf refuge in the middle of nowhere and also leaving the kid there but couldnt as they were finally tracked down.

In the last episode he wasnt being 'tracked' and wasnt scared about it either. The bounty hunters werent even sure if it was really him.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 12/6/2019, 10:57 AM
@four20smoke - Thanks, that explanation makes sense. However, didn't the beeping on the fob speed up when pointed at Baby Yoda in episode one? Doesn't that mean it wasn't based only on last location?

@LongMayHeReign - YES! DNA tracking would be a silly concept in the SW universe. Obi-Wan wouldn't have had to track Jango with a physical tracker. He could have just tracked him with DNA. Vader could've easily found Obi-Wan and Yoda in exile if it were a thing.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 12/6/2019, 10:59 AM
@BountyCipher - What does "tracking biological signal" even mean? If that's a thing why couldn't Vader just find Obi-Wan instantly on Tatooine?
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 12/6/2019, 11:46 AM
@Nightwing1015 - He would still need a DNA sample of Jango to do so tho, same with Vader you need some blood or something to track the target.
four20smoke
four20smoke - 12/6/2019, 11:49 AM
@Nightwing1015 - i liken that to the waypoint idea, the closer you get to that location the 'hotter' it becomes on the locator. They mentioned a few times that there have been several hunters who tried to get the bounty and the little alien dude also mentioned that the captors had been there a while and he actually knew where to take Mando without using a fob.

It would reason, at least to me, that over time the 'waypoint' got fine tuned to a more exact location as hunters reported this recon. This could be why IG11 may have known where to go as well.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 12/6/2019, 11:59 AM
@LongMayHeReign - And did Obi-Wan not leave any DNA in his Jedi quarters? Or Yoda? And the idea that DNA gives out a signal you can track across the galaxy is just crazy. It's more like magic and less like Sci-fi.

And Obi-Wan had Jango's DNA. Just take a sample from any clone.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 12/6/2019, 12:08 PM
@Nightwing1015 - You call that magic but powerful force users like Vader can sense the presence of Obi Wan aboard a giant planet size space station. I mean if DNA tracking is where your suspension of disbelief ends with Star Wars then I just think you're nitpicking a little too much.
