THE MANDALORIAN: Lucasfilm Exec Responds To Controversial Baby Yoda Scenes From "The Passenger"

Last Friday's episode of The Mandalorian came in for some backlash for a running joke which saw The Child eat several of Frog Lady's eggs, and Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak has now responded.

The second season 2 episode of The Mandalorian, "The Passenger," found Din Djarin ferrying a new alien character and her precious cargo to her home planet, and it featured a running gag which saw The Child, aka Baby Yoda, seizing every opportunity to eat one of her eggs.

Some saw the funny side, but a lot of viewers were appalled by what they perceived to be The Child essentially devouring the nice Frog Lady's unborn children, and the episode came in for quite a lot of backlash.

Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak has now addressed fans' concerns via the following Tweet, confirming a popular theory that "Frog Lady's eggs are unfertilized, like the chicken eggs many of us enjoy," while also acknowledging that Baby Yoda's repeated scoffing of the eggs was "intentionally disturbing, for comedic effect."

What did you guys make of BY eating Frog Lady's eggs? Did you find it disturbing, or do you feel people are making far too much of it?

Drop us a comment down below, and be sure to tune in to Disney+ for a new episode of The Mandalorian this Friday.

@Doomsday8888 -
Really, who thought that was funny. It may fit the conventions of comedy but they made the stakes too high. Last of their line and the kid is munching them down.

Yeah well the eggs we eat aren't the chicken's last hope to start a new family (I guess, since we actually can't ask the chicken). It was disturbing indeed, but the hilarious effect wore out quickly after a few times

@bkmeijer - Yeah, the final gag especially was just one too far on the cruel meter. Frog lady trying to keep her line alive is the emotional core of the episode, and there is a big scene where she saves Baby Yoda despite him eating her eggs...just for him to know it’s wrong and still sneak another. Poor taste and weird writing imo

Just some good old fashioned frog egg soup. Nothing to see here.

The only problem was that they really out stretched the joke. It was only funny the first time IMO.

I mean, it's fully within their creative rights to intentionally try to make one of their cutest characters ever a little more disturbing and gross.

It just seems obvious that the supposed comedic aspect of the Child snacking his way towards the extermination of a desperate mother's family didn't quite work for a lot of people.

@Kyos - And it is probably a setup for a future plot point. They will possibly be exploring his questionable conduct. It may even be a point that too much time away from parental guidance has made him basically a sociopath, ostracized by his own kind.

It went on way too long though and it felt akin to [frick]ing with someone’s IVF eggs

@BlackBeltJones - Bruh. What?
Way too much of a reach.

@SnideCut - it might be lol but while I was watching my roommate said it was like an episode of SVU when someone stole IVF eggs and kept taking them out and tossing them.

The Frog was very sincere and unwavering about the importance of those eggs as the last chance to have kids. I usually don’t cringe at stuff like this but I was surprised how much Baby Yoda eating the eggs rubbed me the wrong way. Good job writers. I felt for the frog lady.
