There's an awful lot we don't know about Giancarlo Esposito's Moff Gideon, and while his connection to the Darksaber is perhaps the biggest lingering mystery right now, fans are anxious to see more from him for a variety of reasons in season two of The Mandalorian

We know he's desperate to get his hands on The Child, while learning more about Gideon will mean we should also find out what exactly happened to the Empire after the deaths of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. Talking of the latter, Esposito has now revealed how the Sith Lord inspired his villain.

Starting by admitting that he felt "ill-equipped" to accept the role of Moff Gideon due to his lack of knowledge about the Star Wars Universe, he used Vader to help him create this character.

"[Thinking] about what that character is, you ask a lot of questions as I do, and then I thought immediately, 'Wow, James Earl Jones. Darth Vader.' How he affected me in my life," Esposito explained. "Who was inside that helmet, who was inside that costume. That could be a part of who Moff Gideon is, but guess what? I don't have to wear the helmet."

Adding that he wanted the character to be "someone who you might think could save the universe," the actor made it clear that he wants to create a mysterious and complex villain who will force viewers to question whether he's a hero or villain. After all, we still don't know why he wants The Child!

There have been hints that cloning could have something to do with it, but whether that's going to tie into how Emperor Palpatine managed to survive Return of the Jedi is impossible to say.

What do you guys think?

I mean, okay, but James Earl Jones was never in the suit.

@LordWaldo - Maybe I'm just confused because Moff Gideon is totally unlike Vader. It doesn't seem like there's any mystery or layers to him at all. So I was just naturally like; he must be referring to him literally.

@LordWaldo - That's incredibly surface level — you'd probably like the YouTube channel called Couch Tomato — and he probably doesn't have a say in any of those things. The natural assumption would be that he's saying that Gideon is similar to Vader in characterisation.

@LordWaldo - "Giancarlo Esposito Reveals Which STAR WARS Villain Has Inspired His Performance" Also, what the [frick] is mysterious about him? He's just Empire guy in charge.

@TheJustinHammer - Baby Yoda is force sensitive. How he survived isn't a question that's brought up nor one that would naturally come to mind, you just accept that he did — same with every present Stormtrooper.

History with Mando? I mean, fair enough but I wouldn't say that warrants him being described as mysterious. He just knew Mando's name. He knew Cara and Greef's too.

@TheJustinHammer - I've never seen anyone mention there being a big mystery element to The Mandalorian or Gideon prior to this thread so as far as I'm concerned you lot are the first to say there is.

What do you mean they're mercs? Point to a line of dialogue please. They're just bog standard Stormtroopers. https://www.cbr.com/star-wars-the-mandalorian-remnant-stormtroopers-explained/

@TheJustinHammer - I legitimately have a downloaded copy of Episode 8 specifically. There's nothing of the sort. Assuming you're talking about Greef but I don't know who else you would be referring to. Maybe Episode 7 but I don't have the resources to check that since they've only put the first two episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+ in the UK thus far (which is [frick]ing stupid).

Anyway; these are stressful times. Don't want to drag you down, you're great.

@BillCipher - Here's Episode 7 online. The Death Troopers shoot up the place, it's silent until regular Stormtroopers arrive wherein Cara says "More Stormtroopers!?" Legitimately nothing else is said about them.

@BillCipher - In looking through that clip, Gideon says "It means more to me than you could ever know" or something along those lines about Baby Yoda. So, I'll give you the mystery aspect there.

@BillCipher - It's not a summary. It's the episode.

@BillCipher - I've already established that we're talking about Greef. Now I've gone through the first ten minutes of Episode 8. I was legitimately typing up every line at first but then I was just like what's the point in doing this? Point is, again, there's nothing of the sort. I stopped after IG-11 shows up and they all fight their way out because there's no reason he would say it beyond that point.

You can find Episode 8 on the same site I linked if you'd like to find the line but you just wont be able to.

@LordWaldo - We're coming to a conclusion, figuring out the fact of the matter. Discussing a TV show? Discussing anything whatsoever? What's the point, amirite? Gone is discourse. You go down that line and you'll start questioning existence as a whole. So it's best to not.

He doesn't really seem like any already established Star Wars villain to me. He's much more calculating and planned. Tarkin or Krennic would be closer but still not really. Actually, maybe Dooku.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 3/26/2020, 12:23 AM
@Nebula - Yeah I was thinking Krennic would be the closest we've seen. Or I guess realistically Thrawn but I didn't think he'd be into that.

I want to see a flashback in which Vader appears training with Gideon. After "Rogue One", Spencer Wilding may return as Vader and Earl Jones.
