There's not a great deal of excitement surrounding Venom right now and that's mostly because fans would much rather see the character swing into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to do battle with Spider-Man. However, director Ruben Fleischer may finally get you excited about what's to come.

"Venom is unique within the canon of Marvel," the filmmaker said when asked why he's a fan of the character. "You can't say there are a lot of other heroes like him. There's something about the tone of Venom that's darker and more menacing. He's not a conventional superhero by any stretch." Some fans are bound to take issue with Venom called a "hero" when he's one of Spidey's greatest foes!

Regardless, Fleischer does have some pretty dark inspirations for the movie as he adds, "Among my influences were John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, even An American Werewolf In London. Unlike most superheroes who get bitten by a spider or invent their own Batsuit, Venom is really the combination of two beings to create a third." Apparently, that's going to be reflected in Hardy's performance, something the recently released trailer for the movie definitely promised would happen.

"Tom's just so incredibly entertaining to watch. Duality is clearly something that fascinates him, so when you watch the way he's acting opposite himself, it's really impressive; just how he's able to conjure an entirely separate version of himself as the symbiote. It's a tour de force performance."

Finally, talk turned to the possibility of a cameo from Tom Holland's Spider-Man, something which has been rumoured to be the case for a while now. As expected, though, it doesn't sound as if that's actually going to happen in Venom. "This feels very much like Venom's movie. It's the introduction of the character. As to where it will go in future movies, and who he'll run across, I can't say."
