VENOM Director Ruben Fleischer Teases Tom Hardy's Dual Performance And The Chances Of A Spider-Man Cameo

Venom director Ruben Fleischer talks here about his inspirations for the movie, how Tom Hardy is essentially playing two characters, and whether or not there's a chance we'll see Spider-Man show up...

There's not a great deal of excitement surrounding Venom right now and that's mostly because fans would much rather see the character swing into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to do battle with Spider-Man. However, director Ruben Fleischer may finally get you excited about what's to come.

"Venom is unique within the canon of Marvel," the filmmaker said when asked why he's a fan of the character. "You can't say there are a lot of other heroes like him. There's something about the tone of Venom that's darker and more menacing. He's not a conventional superhero by any stretch." Some fans are bound to take issue with Venom called a "hero" when he's one of Spidey's greatest foes!

Regardless, Fleischer does have some pretty dark inspirations for the movie as he adds, "Among my influences were John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, even An American Werewolf In London. Unlike most superheroes who get bitten by a spider or invent their own Batsuit, Venom is really the combination of two beings to create a third." Apparently, that's going to be reflected in Hardy's performance, something the recently released trailer for the movie definitely promised would happen.

"Tom's just so incredibly entertaining to watch. Duality is clearly something that fascinates him, so when you watch the way he's acting opposite himself, it's really impressive; just how he's able to conjure an entirely separate version of himself as the symbiote. It's a tour de force performance."

Finally, talk turned to the possibility of a cameo from Tom Holland's Spider-Man, something which has been rumoured to be the case for a while now. As expected, though, it doesn't sound as if that's actually going to happen in Venom. "This feels very much like Venom's movie. It's the introduction of the character. As to where it will go in future movies, and who he'll run across, I can't say."

That is the exact literal reason why spider-man does need to be in the movie to some capacity. This movie is so clueless. At least In that aspect. Im still hoping. Praying it’s good

At his core this dude is a villain my guy. Sony is gonna need to pull something outta a hat for this one.

@MarvelDCAllDay - Maybe they’ll show his eventual descent into villainy? Kinda like what’s been going on in Legion. Starts out an antihero and gradually devolves into something darker?

Or, you could think of it as Eddy is a flawed hero, the symbiote is a villain and Venom, is a character between them. The point being, the character can be seen as all three, or whichever you want him to be. If it helps you to consider him a villain because of his comic book history, just look at the film as a villain’s origin story. He can always turn bad when Spiderman enters the picture, if that ever occurs.

@connorblaze - If they pull that off well Sony would get a lot of credit from me.

@connorblaze - The moment will come when the influence of the symbiote is too strong and will nullify Eddie's will. This is the time when Venom is the villain.

The trailer reminds me of the first Terminator ...and everyone thought that was gonna suck back in the 80s.

Don’t worry 😉 I’ll have someone who pays to see it tell me.

I love everything the director has been saying about this movie. I was disappointed when I saw little of it in the trailers, it looks kinda cheap and generic, but if he can indeed let that Carpenter/Cronenberg influence show, and explore the duality of the character, I’ll be really glad. Because Tom Hardy would be wasted if they did anything less. He’s perfect for this. I hope they go really dark with it.

Bruh take all that duality and go make Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. FFS how hard is it to get the origin right? You don’t have Venom without Spider-Man. Period.

I love Tom Hardy as an actor but c’mon!!!

I know that if Peter ever appears in this, it'll be Holland but I would be more pleased if Garfield makes his last appearance as Spidey. It will not ruin the MCU if it's bad and it will show what happens to his Peter after TASM2.

@PINOYFAN - Garfield has burned his bridges with Sony. He signed a contract for films and promotion, then became a no-show for some of that promotion. Sony will never forgive him.

If Sony pulls a dick move and has \holand int there to try and trick audiences i want Feige to kill Spider-man in the MCU permanently. The MCU doesn't need him and Feige knows it. He is a huge fan of the character that's why he went through hell and high water to get him in the MCU.

I just hate Sony's mentality on forcing universes where there isn't enough material.

If the final, working cut, is a success with test audiences, they'll add an after credit Spidey scene. If not . . .
PINOYFAN
PINOYFAN - 6/13/2018, 3:04 AM
What if Holland appears as Peter but he is just playing Spidey in a movie and that's where the symbiote get it's “inspiration”. If Feige wants it, it can be confirmed that the mvie is set in the MCU but he doesn't want to, it can be that the movie is set in a universe where the MCU are just movies (like real life). Tom Holland can be credited as “Spider-Man actor” so it'll be vague. Sound stupid isn't it?

@BillyBatson1000 - Hardy was most liklely attracted to the project because he has a hard om for playing roled rife with duality. I like Hardy but he and Ruben don't get Venom.

His very existence and drive is his hatted of Spiderman. I know hes gone on to develop other agendas besides that but his origin is because of Spiderman and I cant see anything but that.

We're prob looking at an origin of cliche now.
BillyBatson1000
BillyBatson1000 - 6/13/2018, 7:23 AM
@BlackBeltJones - I agree with you. You'd think they'd have learned a lesson from the way Venom was so crudely 'cut n pasted' into Spider-Man 3 almost like a last thought. (And they cast Topher Grace! Topher Grace! About as menacing as a mouse in carpet slippers.) The character definitely needed space to breathe, a whole movie to himself. But will this be it?
