VENOM Looks To Gobble Up $65 Million Plus Over The Course Of Its Opening Weekend

The latest box office tracking for Sony Pictures' Venom indicates that the unofficial Spider-Man spin-off could take in over $65 million in North America when it hits theaters on October 5. Check it out...

As Sony prepares to enter into its final marketing push for Venom, the latest industry estimates point to the first solo big-screen outing for the psychotic symbiote taking in between $60 - $70 million over the course of its opening weekend in North America.

Early opening weekend forecasts indicated that the movie could be looking at $65 – $85 million, but studio insiders are being more cautious.

Still, even if Venom manages to climb higher than the $50 million mark it has a very good shot at breaking the October opening weekend record currently held by Gravity ($55.8 million).

Either way, these projections would seem to suggest that general audiences have been more responsive to the trailers than a good portion of the fan community.

@Fogs - it has such a weird, desperate to be edgy circa 2005 vibe in all of the trailers.

Even if 2005 isn't the best year to compare it to, it still feels weirdly dated thus far.

@Fogs - We love that film. My kids and I do a Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, and Legend marathon every so often. It's funny. David Bowie couldn't do the crystal ball thing. That is some one else's hand!

Tom Hardy is the only reason for me to see this. However it does look like it may be the worst performance of his career yet...

Not surprising. October is weak.

That is until Mike comes in the following week and goes to work.

He's coming Eddie...

Let's see what happens. Sony and Avi Arad are known for ruining anything Spider-Man related when it comes to movies. It would be a miracle if they don't [frick] up Venom.
Dacci
Dacci - 9/13/2018, 11:58 AM
@E4Nigma - Maybe that's exactly their strategy..."Maybe if we don't have Spiderman in it, it will actually turn out OK"

@Dacci -

I'll believe it when I see it. I don't trust them making comic book movies.

@E4Nigma - Avi Ard produced the first 2 Spider-Man films, so cant say he ruined everything in general

I know it’s shitty to feel this way and I never hope for movies to fail, but I kinda want this movie to fail. I’m hoping First Man, A Star is Born, Bad Times at the El Royale and Halloween all combine to put a giant dent in this movie’s box-office. Just so Sony can finally wake up and realize they don’t know what they’re doing with these characters and this universe.

@MUTO123 - Hard to say that with any real conviction without having seen any of the movies.

@TheUnworthyThor - True, but I have a feeling they’ll all be vastly superior to Venom.

You know what? Good. Good on it for getting the general audience excited. I got to see Halloween recently. Man...I know this is a comic book site, but horror films have been SPECTACULAR lately, and Halloween is no different. Just a solid, well-crafted picture.

I’m just worried that it’ll do good enough to warrant the idiots at Sony to give us more mediocre, stupid stuff we don’t need. Venom without Spidey is already pissing me off.
Catmanlives
Catmanlives - 9/13/2018, 11:48 PM
@Frshcoupe - Yeah that's my biggest worry too. If I knew they were doing this, and that was it I'd be more relaxed about it, but the long game here is very worrying. I won't be supporting it based on that.
