VENOM Solo Film Still In The Cards, But Down The Road
At San Diego Comic Con, Crave Online spoke with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 producer, Matt Tolmach. During the discussion the Venom solo movie was brought up. Check it out.
Producer Matt Tolmach recently chatted with Crave Online about his upcoming film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and at the very end of the discussion he was asked about the long-gestating Venom solo film.
CRAVE ONLINE: I heard that the original plan was to incorporate Venom at some point as a solo film, and then maybe tie him into the franchise later. Is Venom still part of your plans?
MATT TOLMACH: There’s nothing formal or official, but it’s always been a dream to make that movie. We’re just not there yet. Right now we’re sort of fixated on this. But is there a sense that down the road things are going to happen? Sure.
So, what do we know about the project, or think we know. Well, in March of 2012, the LA Times reported that Josh Trank ("Chronicle") would be directing the film, but no official confirmation was made on that. Although, a few months later Deadline stated that Trank was still working on the project even though his named was attached to several other films. The a month later in June of 2012, we got our first real meaty bits of info on the story from producers Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach. They spoke with Hollywood.com and confirmed that the Venom film would feature Eddie Brock's story. Tolmach explained, "He was a journalist. He had the wrong story, he got in trouble for it, he got fired. The whole essence to us for the Marvel characters. Stay close to the bible, stay close to the emotional story, and the rest is fun."
Now, all this is good and dandy, but we have a good reason not to get excited about this. Sony has been trying for years to pull off a Venom solo film. In 2009, they had Hunger Games director Gary Ross attached, but that never got off the ground.
