Like most of the world, James Cameron is in quarantine while work on Avatar 2 is paused. However, little could we have known that the filmmaker is spending his free time watching Resident Evil!
The classic video game franchise began way back in 1996, and is widely regarded as one of the most iconic survival horror titles in history. Eventually, a movie was released in 2002, but the response from fans was mixed and largely negative. Since then, there has been an additional five Resident Evil films, with the franchise concluding with 2017's The Final Chapter.
Speaking to Empire, Cameron admitted that he's been enjoying watching the 2002 movie while home, and offered high praise. "One of my guilty-pleasure films that I actually think is quite beautifully made is Resident Evil," he told the publication. "Watching Michelle Rodriguez in that film, moving like this feral creature, is joyful."
It's no great surprise that he has good things to say about Rodriguez as the actress starred both in Avatar, and Alita: Battle Angel (which Cameron produced for filmmaker Robert Rodriguez).
The Resident Evil films weren't great, but they did put the spotlight on strong female leads, a recurring presence in all of Cameron's movies. That likely explains why he's such a fan of that first one.
