Will the caped crusader return to his old stomping grounds in Gotham? Senior Rocksteady Programmer, Paul Denny, hints at what to expect in the upcoming sequel.

Paul Denny, a senior programmer at Rocksteady, recently let slip some interesting tidbits about the gameplay in the upcoming highly anticipated sequel to "Batman: Arkham Asylum." Here's what he had to say:

"You could always expand [on Arkham Asylum] and there are games in the past that have gone down that route," said Denning when asked if the game would include other famous Gotham locales. "But I think you're right. Gotham itself is a fantastically realized fictional city and there are so many places that would probably be ideal for gameplay and great to explore."

Also, for many of those gamers who were hoping for a completely free-roaming "sandbox" Gotham, Denning had this to say:

"If Arkham Asylum had been that kind of game I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been as good," said Denning. "I think sandbox games that do that well are so hard to realize; GTA is obviously a fantastic example of one that gets it right but there are so many that get it wrong and I think you have to be so careful when you take that route."

Macksimus - well, looks like freedom of movement in Gotham will be limited to specific locations and not the city entirely. Maybe there will be an "over world" map of Gotham where you can choose which locations to go to.

Free roam with random crimes that you choose if you want to stop, like the Spiderman 2 game. I want a very physical main villain.

I'm thinking that the second installment of this series will most likely be the criminals taking over the Gotham City Police Department and you have to put all the crooks back in their cells, restoring order, saving cops and finally rescuing Gordon, tied up with the final boss, on the roof with the bat-signal shining in the sky.

It seems like the next logical location keeping in with the theme of the game.

I dont think its so much as put them in cells as much as just beating them up.

I'm still hoping for a sand box Batman:Gotham game. InFamous got it right!!! It wouldn't be that hard to adapt it to Batman really. Just have Tenchu stealth controls, InFamous gliding capabilities (but with his cape instead), keep the great combo fighting from Arkham Asylum and incorporate The Batmobile to ride the streets (similar to GTA). You got yourself a game of the year right there!

@ shaman- Totally agree. I soooo want a free-roaming Batman game. If they could do it for Spider-Man, then they can surely do it with Batman.

That exec fool has gotta point. The info needed to make a sandbox would deminish the quality in other places. just give me more ...dont mess it up please. i will punch a bunny if they mess it up!

Shibz- That's true though. If they make it sandbox, the graphics wouldn't be as good. But everything else would stay awesome. InFamous had amazing graphics and captured the feel of what could easily be a free roaming Gotham. They just need to make the buildings taller, closer and gothic-er and it would have been awesome.

AxlKomix- My sentiments exactly! If InFamous, Spider-Man and GTA can do it, i really can't see why Batman couldn't. Having said that, i can't wait for the sequel, sandbox or not!

I foresee Gotham being like Venice in Assassins Creed 2 just on a bigger scale, area's will open as you progress through storyline, and after they are open you can travel to them in the Bat-plane instead of walking the whole way.

@Shaman@ I'm still sketchy on a Infamous type Batman game, like I have said before I like the idea but not as a sequel to Batman: AA because it will change the whole feel of that game, it would be more like Assassins Creed with Batman.

A message to all CBMers from THEPHOENIX (THEHAWK's wife):

"Hawk was in a pretty bad motorcycle wreck this weekend. He is stable, but still unconscious. Someone has also gotten into HAWK's e-mail account and changed the password. They are now using it to contact everyone he knows and ask for money. He is not stuck in Europe or hiding out in Pakistan, he is in a hospital bed. It is a scam! So to everyone that was contacted, DO NOT send any money transfers!!!"

Osiris- That's true as well but the thing is that i would want it MORE than a AA sequel. We can't have both at the same time. Only one game of the same franchise can be released at a time. So until Eidos stops making sequels to the great AA, we'll never get our sandbox batman game!!! That would suck. I want both but would prefer a sandbox game.

I suppose that is true Shaman, maybe if they ease into instead of changing genre right away it wont be such a blow.

Osiris- Hmmm... Good point. THis sequel could bridge the franchise to a sandbox concept. It could just roughly expand the area making it look more sandboxy and then make a full version for a third edition! Good thinking :))

look at the logo. its concrete and crumbling. i think it will be a variant of the no mans land plot, by having it be placed in the aftermath of an earthquake, you can put it in gotham, give it free roaming gameplay, and limit the play area with a legitimate reason and not suffer from the graphical quality and glitches that plague sand box titles

I would love it if, the second game is exactly like the last.... and when you beat certain levels you can go into Gotham and roam... but to do that you will need a second disk that is downloaded intoyour system and shares info with the first to be unlocked. This way i can accept the lower quality graphics and see it as a different game as well. Hell just make a different game all together... I will buy both styles for sure. Oh please make both types of game... please

what if they introduced robin in this one for co-op ?!
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 12/16/2009, 10:27 PM
its not a matter of not being able to make an open world batman game, of course they could...but thats a totally different genre of game. it wouldn't be a sequel of this game if they decided to make it open world...it would be something entirely different.

i would like an open world batman game too, but i also want a sequel for this.

ALRIGHT!!! It's settled then, GIVE US BOTH!!!!!!!

I can't wait to explore the real Batcave in this game.... because you know they will include Wayne Manor at some point in the game, or gain access to it via some other way... maybe real Batcave will = new batmobile.
