Sony Has CG-Animated/Live-Action SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Film In The Works
We're already getting Power Rangers and now another childhood hero is heading to the big screen. It has been announced that Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog is in the early stages of development over at Sony.
Sony Pictures and Neal H. Moritz, producer of the Fast & Furious franchise, are set to bring another high speed franchise to life: Sonic the Hedgehog! The studio will team up with the CG animation film-production company Marza Animation Planet and a division of the Sega Sammy Group to develop a hybrid CG-animated/live-action feature film featuring the speedy hedgehog. Evan Susser & Van Robichaux have been tapped to write the script which will follow the escapades of Sonic & his friends and is also expected to feature the notorious Dr. Eggman.
The billion dollar video game franchise has been one of the world's biggest gaming phenomena for over two decades with over 140 million games sold. The franchise has also expanded over to comics, a television series, merchandise, and more.
Columbia Pictures president of production Hannah Minghella had this to say about the announcement: "There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base, along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."
Marza CEO added: "Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we're thrilled that he's now coming to the big screen. Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we're confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him."
