THE AVENGERS PROJECT: Square Enix Hints At When Their Big Marvel Game Will Finally Be Released

Company president Yosuke Matsuda alludes to the 2018 release of Square Enix's upcoming Marvel game, The Avengers Project. Expect a more formal announcement regarding the anticipated game in early 2018.

While Marvel has announced a slew of (mostly mobile) video games based on our favorite heroes and villains, there's one game in particular that comic fans are really looking forward to - Square Enix's The Avengers Project. But when can we expect it to release?

While we don't have a firm date, the latest financial report from Square Enix strongly suggests The Avengers Project will release sometime next year.

During the presentation, company president Yosuke Matsuda mentioned that Square Enix currently has “many overseas titles slated for launch in FY2019/3 and beyond.” In Japan, the third financial quarter for Square Enix runs from October to December 2018, providing a window for the publisher's unnamed projects. Later on in the call, Matsuda was asked a question about the progress of the three-year development lead time for Square Enix's games - and particularly the Western developed titles - which provided clear indication that The Avengers Project is at least one of those games slated for launch.

Matsuda replied,"I believe you will be able to tell how long our development lead times are based on the launch dates we will be announcing for our games going forward...the development efforts for the new titles we will be launching starting in FY2019/3 are proceeding in line with our plans."

Crystal Dynamics is currently leading development on The Avengers Project, and their previous game, Rise of the Tomb Raider, was initially released in November 2015. Assuming everything is indeed on track, this three-year development pipeline fits right on schedule with a November/December 2018 release for The Avengers Project.

Nothing is confirmed just yet, but Matsuda did say that Square Enix will be announced the release dates of their upcoming titles during the first half of next year "between the end of FY2018/3 and E3."

Teased earlier this year, The Avengers Project is said to be packed with "all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise." It will feature a completely original story that will introduce a brand new universe for gamers to play in for "years to come." The Avengers Project is the first game part of a multi-year, multi-game partnership between Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix.
