Back in July, DC Comics released a free DC Essentials Catalog (2023) published on the 18th which revealed all the comics and graphic novels that will serve as inspiration for Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.

There were three  Wonder Woman titles listed in the catalog, Wonder Woman Historia: The AmazonsWonder Woman: Paradise Lost (New Edition) and Wonder Woman: Paradise Found (New Edition). It's thought that these new titles will all serve as inspiration for the upcoming Paradise Lost television series for Max.

In the official Gods and Monsters announcement video Gunn described the project as, "We're doing a television series called Paradise Lost. Paradise Lost is the story of Paradise Island, usually known as Themyscira which is the birthplace of Wonder Woman. It's almost like Game of Thrones with Westeros but with all the inhabitants of Paradise Island."

Following that video, Gunn told reporters, "This is a Game of Thrones-type story about the atmosphere of Paradise Island, home of the Amazons and the birthplace of Wonder Woman and this involves all the darkness and drama and political intrigue behind this society of only women."

"It's an origin story of, how did this society women come about? What does it mean? What are their politics like? What are their rules? Who's in charge? What are all the games that they play with each other to get to the top? I think it's a really exciting thing."

As you can see above, the DC reboot and Gunn's shoutout of Historia is skyrocketing its sales numbers.

If you haven't checked out the series and want to get a sense of where Gunn and Safran are planning to take the Amazonian princess, you definitely want to check out the Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Jimenez title.

The wait is over, and the entire story of the Amazons can finally be told! Millennia ago, Queen Hera and the goddesses of the Olympian pantheon grew greatly dissatisfied with their male counterparts…and far from their sight, they put a plan into action. A new society was born, one never before seen on Earth, capable of wondrous and terrible things…but their existence could not stay secret for long. When a despairing woman named Hippolyta crossed the Amazons' path, a series of events was set in motion that would lead to an outright war in heaven—and the creation of the Earth's greatest guardian!

Legendary talents Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Jimenez unleash a reading experience the likes of which you've never seen, with unbelievably sumptuous art and a story that will haunt you—with subsequent issues featuring art by modern masters Gene Ha and Nicola Scott! One of the most unforgettable DC tales of all time begins here!

Actually....yeah.

It's a GREAT story matched with incredible art.

Forced me to change my opinion about DeConnick as a writer but then again...her brief Aquaman run was not so bad either.

...or WB is still trying to convince everyone he is some kind of amazing CEO. I am still waiting on the great viewership numbers for that James Gunn TV phenomenon Peacemaker. It is such a huge success at the studio we will have to wait until 2026 to see the next season. Glad it is a priority over there!

@Forthas - it was the highest streamed show on max throughout its tenure and the numbers didn't drop on the way to the finale.

@AmazingFILMporg

It was still a good show lockdown or not. I’d prolly put it above every marvel D+ show outside of season 1 of Loki.

This, and the rumored Korean Huntress film, are two of the more exciting comic book projects in development right now… if they get the right creatives. And considering Gunn’s already hired Muschietti, Slater and Hodson, i’m not immensely confident

If Gods and Monsters is Chapter One and the first half of it was 5 films long (plus at least one Elseworlds film, if that's still actually happening) at an average rate of two per year, that's about 3 years worth of storytelling.

If that's just one half of Chapter One, then they will be about 6 years into their plan when it ends. So by the end of their 10 year plan they will probably be on Chapter Two.

That's a pretty short book (or cinematic graphic novel).

I wonder how long Gunn envisions his story to be and if he has an idea of how it ends.

This probably would've been the best direction for Patty Jenkins to go in, after the first Wonder Woman movie. I do hope James Gunn confirms Gal Gadot's status, one way or the other. If he keeps her on, does he use some of the established DCEU canon, or does he start completely over. New Amazons, new Steve Trevor, etc.

The ambition is admirable but I don't think Themyscira was anywhere close to Westeros as Gunn thinks it is. Mentioning GoT as a way to hype it up isn't not only not that accurate but also placing it on an almost unreacheable bar because now many will expect GoT type of stuff.

He should rethink the approach.

I wish MCU directors and writers did this kinda publlicity for their source material as well.
