Negative word of mouth...plus pandemic wiped WW84 off the map.
When you break down the HBO max subscriptions, the release of WW84 didn't really add anything. Since it launched HBO max subscriptions basically doubled every 3 months which is a pattern that saw no change after the release of WW84. So they undercut themselves and lost tons of money on the film and saw little to no gain in subscriptions. And WB hurt their reputation as seen by Nolan's departure.
Disney has no reason now to follow HBO Max after seeing these results. Black Widow is said to not be going to digital release.
As one financier tells The Hollywood Reporter, releasing movies while theaters are closed is "great for headlines, but not for the bottom line." They use the poor performance of Wonder Woman 1984 as an example, noting: "The major studios have realized there is no point in trying to release their product right now."
WB is a shady company you cant trust their "paid articles" like yesterday about WW84 doing great. WB right now is not even reporting box office "actuals" anymore because it can hurt their stocks. That growth is mostly from people who already had HBO and finally updated to HBO MAX for "free" along with "free trial" subscribers. They are apparently counting "users" instead of subscribers as growth too because if you share your account to 4 people that's 4 more users not subscribers.
WW84 is a flop in terms of database growth and cost. Kong vs Godzilla was paid to move up because they needed another big draw before more "paying subscribers" quit. AT&T just sold crunchyroll to Sony so they are probably going to lose a huge library of anime too which has a huge crowd. AT&T probably regrets buying Time Warner for 85 billion right now as the profit/management has been terrible.
Things are not going exactly as planned for Warner, as they saw Wonder Woman 1984 severely underperform in China, according to Variety. Despite its predecessor being a $38m hit in 2017, Wonder Woman 1984 only sold around $18.8m in China this time around, falling short of Chinese blockbuster The Rescue which grabbed $36m from the box office, even with the former taking up most of the IMAX screenings in the country.
Outside of China, things are not looking much better for Wonder Woman 1984, with the film totaling $38.5m from all 32 markets where it opened, a relatively small number far below the $60m dollar expectations Warner had for opening weekend.
WW84 FLOPPED!! Who would have thought we'd be here in 2021 but here we are.
