WONDER WOMAN 1984: Warner Bros. Will Make A Decision In The Coming Weeks About December Release

Right now, Wonder Woman 1984 is set to be released on Christmas Day, but it seems that could change again, and Warner Bros. will make a final decision on the matter in the coming weeks. Check it out...

There aren't many blockbusters left in 2020, with theaters relying on titles like The Croods: A New Age, Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy, and Wonder Woman 1984. The latter is set to be released on Christmas Day, and with a small number of theaters in New York City now open, the industry is relying heavily on that DC Comics movie to bring the masses back to multiplexes.

Unfortunately, Tenet proved that many people remain reluctant to head to theaters until a vaccine is available. Thus far, the Christopher Nolan sci-fi flick earned only $283 million overseas and $50 million in the U.S. over two months. That's not good for a movie that cost $200 million to produce, and millions besides to market.

Variety explains that even if Wonder Woman 1984 ends up making half as much as 2017's Wonder Woman (which grossed over $820 million worldwide), that would not be a good result for a sequel Warner Bros. expected to earn much more than its predecessor.

The trade notes that, "Warner Bros. is eager to unveil 'Wonder Woman 1984,' a movie that was filmed in 2018, to the masses, but insiders suggest the studio won’t make a decision about its release for at least another few weeks to better assess the landscape."

A gap in production schedules mean studios have no problem with pushing titles into 2021 as everything has slipped down the calendar thanks to COVID-19, so another delay sadly seems likely.

At this point, major studios are holding off on releasing huge blockbusters on Digital platforms, but if things don't improve between now and 2021, they may have no choice but to embrace that format.

For now, though, don't be surprised if Wonder Woman 1984 slips into 2021!

I doubt we'll see it this year. I don't plan on going to the cinema the rest of the year, and I think I'm far from the only one with that mindset

@bkmeijer - it got delayed twice, a third marketing campign would be very expensive. They movie needs to do big time revenue to make even.

December release is not gonna happen. It would be a massive flop in US and many European countries. All big movies will delay release to next year or go Digital.

Mickey Mouse has the responsibility of going first. Whatever Disney decides to do with Black Widow, WB can just copy. Simple as that.

@KWilly - Monopoly laws prevent it. Time was studios did own cinemas.

I don’t know what could possibly happen in the next couple of weeks that would convince them that they can release Wonder Woman into theaters.

Would be a perfect selling point for HBO Max this Christmas.

Maybe they could give it a limited theatrical release to appease the director, Tenet-style although I don't think it will make even an iota of Tenet's Box Office.

It's unrealistic to wait for a time in which a film like this might make money. Covid's not going anywhere for years.

Well certain parts of the Great State of New York are set to open up theatres to limited capacity.

So New York is here to save the movie industry or doom America with being a place for a super spreader.

I’m not going either way.

If I recall correctly, they said the same thing about Black Widow before it was delayed (and maybe other movies): that the studio “will make a decision in the coming weeks”. 2020 is over- and, fortunately, almost actually over.

@WeaponXCII - Unfortunately this is going to continue through 2021 as well...Maybe we can get some normalcy back by 2022...

@vegetaray - I’m hoping for normalcy as soon as possible, but I suspect this will extend into 2021 as well....

"WONDER WOMAN 1984: Warner Bros. Will Make A Decision In The Coming Weeks About December Release".

That went without saying. ALL of the studios are going to make decisions about ALL of the films currently scheduled for theatrical releases within weeks of their release dates. Either leave them as scheduled, reschedule, or just pull them from being released for the time being, or on to streaming. This is literally what has been going on for most of the year.

Why is this an even an article?

Landscape? Come on.

They're not waiting to see what happens with COVID directly. They're waiting to see who wins the election. Whoever wins will take it as approval (by the voters) of their future approach to COVID and the economy. One will encourage more shutdowns and quarantining the rest of this year while the other will encourage the opposite.

It would be stupid to release it before January if Biden wins. If Trump wins, they may have no reason to wait.

it'll be released and so will black widow.

You can either release the film in theaters and let it do whatever it can at the box office, then sell it to streaming/ HBO Max for another 500-600 million to get the remaining amount it would have normally made at the box office, OR wait until late Spring or early summer and release it then. There's already a partial cure, just look at the President.
