X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Delayed Until 2019 As THE NEW MUTANTS Gets Pushed Back AGAIN

Fox waited until nearly midnight to drop this bombshell but there's no way they can avoid backlash for this decision! X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants have been delayed and you can find out more here.

Disney's acquisition of Fox is expected to be completed by mid-2019 at the latest and based on the newly announced release dates for X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, there's a very good chance that deal will have gone through by the time they reach theaters. Originally set for release on November 2nd, 2018, Simon Kinberg's X-Men: Dark Phoenix is now slated for February 14th, 2019

That's a pretty significant delay and could be down to the fact that the movie reportedly makes use of a great deal of VFX. There could be any number of reasons for this release date change, including issues with the finished product or Fox being more confident with a February debut for the Marvel movie.

As for The New Mutants, that's already been moved from April 13th, 2018 to February 22nd, 2019 to accommodate reshoots adding more horror elements and another character but now isn't being released until August 2nd, 2019. Disney will probably own Fox by then so don't be surprised if it never actually reaches
theaters or heads straight to Blu-ray/TV. For now, though, we'll have to wait and see!

How do you feel about these delays? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Great! Now I have to go from not watching it in Nov. To not watching it in February?

I think we can officially call the gambit movie deader than Brendan Fraiser's career as well.

To hopefully get it right and make a good film.
Their last X-men film made $500 million.

Outside of Deadpool its been a rocky inconsistent franchise.

@Humperdink - That assumes that they did not get this film right. They have been hit or miss actually so there is no telling how this one would have turned out.

@Forthas - If we follow the pattern one could say the next X-Men movie should be good, just look:

X1 - HIT
X2 - HIT
X3 - MISS
FC - HIT
DOFP - HIT
XA - MISS
DP - HIT?

@Forthas - im optimistic as the bts photos look interesting. but more than that, i think the new strategy is to now release all comic book movies in seperate months so it has legs to stay #1 more than just the usual 2 weeks, then drop.

Black panther was #1 for 5 weeks straight becuz it had no competition. i think fox wants to try and do the same as april and august are usually considered the "dead months".

Marvel releasing avengers 3 early already proves they regret not releasing it a month earlier where there is no comp. insiders state that marvel is worried that infinity war is not going to do better than black panther at the domestic box office.
PBIRD
PBIRD - 3/27/2018, 6:11 AM
@mastakilla39 - If IW doesn't do as good as black panther, then who cares. Black panther was a cultural movement. Avengers is only in competition with other avengers movies. And that's how they want it.
MyBeard
MyBeard - 3/27/2018, 6:48 AM
@mastakilla39 - That sounds rather suspect. We're not talking about JL and WW here. The only way BP makes more money than IW is if it's a terribly disappointing film. Deadpool and Solo are not going to kneecap it to the extent it can't clear $1.3 billion, unless it's very lackluster, and so far nothing suggests that is the case.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 3/27/2018, 7:30 AM
@PBIRD - what do mean who cares? disney and feige care. avengers 3&4 2gether cost 500mil+ & that does not include marketing or reshoots. Avengers 3&4 have to at minimum gross more than 1.5 bil each to meet expectations.

BP was an unexpected hit, if a solo film that cost less outgrosses an avengers film they will likely cut the next avenger films budget and reduce the amount of characters. WB cancelled JL2 and is focusing on solo films only for the next 2-3 years becuz WW outgrossed their costly ensemble films.

Both AOU and Civil War were considered "slight disappointments" because they both cost more and failed to surpass avenger 1's worlwide box office total.

cultural movement does not matter if the business part fails. a wrinkle in time is the 1st black female director to have a budget of over 100 mil and that film failed.

mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 3/27/2018, 7:58 AM
@MyBeard - I was talking about the domestic box office only. Avengers 3&4 are guaranteed to make more than BP worldwide. Lackluster or not doesnt matter if they both fail to beat BP's domestic total of 631+mil. As BP is the highest grossing superhero film of all time domestically.

And yes DP2 and Solo will hurt infinity war's domestic box office because they will dethrone IW's #1 streak. No MCU film besides Avengers 1 and BP have stayed #1 for more than 3 weeks.

If avengers 3 came out beginning of April it would have been #1 until Solo and DP came out. And have a higher domestic box office, as BP took advantage of coming out early and having no competition from other big franchises.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 3/27/2018, 8:08 AM
@PBIRD - lol, so true! but you can tell they are concerned too as they opened avengers 3 a week earlier now. disney made a stupid move forcing solo's release date only 2 weeks after IW and forcing fox to move deadpool from june to may.

All good for fans as we see it earlier, sucks for business as audiences also move on quickly if there is a lot to see.

Its going to suck if Marvel moves away from the avengers films if their solo films are more profitable than a team up.

@MyBeard - "The only way BP makes more money than IW is if it's a terribly disappointing film."

Why are you considering that outside the realm of possibility? The reason Black Panther has made more than almost every single Marvel movie is because it deserves to. It's one of two Marvel movies that actually had something to say, and it was never interrupted by a joke or something that detracted from it. It was a turning point for the studio. Civil War was the most disappointing Comic Book Movie in years, there's also a strong possibility that Thanos has been reimagined as Superboy Prime, and while there is a possibility that the Russo brothers may be given a chance to go back to their Winter Soldier roots, there is just as much possibility that, with sixty characters and an attempt to lighten up a story, that deals with the destruction of half a universe, they may over do it. I'm sure it's going to be good, and sure it's going make a lot of money, but I just don't see how it will top Black Panther, which is revolutionary for a Marvel film. Not just in its lead, but in its superior storytelling that separate it from the rest of the Marvel films.

@Humperdink - Shoot, can't even include Deadpool yet because they've still just put out the one movie.
MyBeard
MyBeard - 3/27/2018, 9:06 AM
@SisterSunday52 - I'm not sure which part of my statement you are disagreeing with.

BP was very good. Infinity War is outpacing it in early ticket sales. Just like you, I think IW is going to be good, but I am leaving open the possibility that it is disappointing, which to me is the only way it ends up making less money than BP. There is currently nothing to indicate that IW will under perform compared to the first 2 Avengers films, and both of those made more than BP will.
MyBeard
MyBeard - 3/27/2018, 9:22 AM
@mastakilla39 - I've never seen anyone use only US box office except to provide support to a suspect claim. What difference does that make to a company whose goal is to maximize return to its shareholders where the money comes from? I've heard that the % going back to the studio is different country to country and usually less, but I still fail to see the logic. It still counts as money and no one would bother tallying worldwide gross at all if it didn't.

I'm not one to equate box office with quality of movie, but weeks at number 1 implies even less. Unless it is terribly disappointing, IW will be a mainstay in theaters and drive-ins for half the summer. Making $30 million is the same whether the film is 1st, 2nd or 3rd for the week. Deadpool and Solo will take some away from the IW total, but not enough to knock it below BP, unless, of course, IW is shitty.

You said Avengers 3 and 4 are guaranteed to make more than BP worldwide. We're on the same page, only I stop before saying guarantee. I don't deny coming out earlier would help IW, I just don't think it would be enough to matter compared to BP.
PBIRD
PBIRD - 3/27/2018, 9:42 AM
@mastakilla39 - I think they definitely wanted to ride the panther hype and get more isolated time to be king. we agree on that. But I think presales for this movie are a great indicator of what they are expecting

@mastakilla39 - No, Black Panther was #1 for five straight weeks because it was are remarkably strong movie. Sorry, but you don't sit at the top that long without some serious legs.

And there was 'competition,' just no one chose to see it (as much as they did seeing–and re-watching–Black Panther).
blitzburgh

@Forthas - not trolling ass, and a lot of people besides myself on this site didn't like that movie so quit being a dipshit
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 3/27/2018, 12:50 PM
@Kozmik - There was no competition for 5 weeks straight. black panther had no big budget franchise to compete with except for A wrinkle in time. But a "superhero" film will dethrone any "kid-family" film. Tomb raider and Pacific rim had no chance because video game movies have no market and pacific rim 1 flopped in the US. If an animated film like Despicable Me 4 or Trolls 2 came out, Black Panther would not have been #1 so long.

Doomsday8888 - 3/27/2018, 1:17 AM
This is really off-putting but...i get it for Dark Phoenix, it's a smart move tbh, cause 2018 is packed around November/December.
I dunno, i think Aquaman should do the same.

They didn't released any trailers, so that's good.
Shiieeeet can't believe i'm actually more worried about New Mutants now! D:
WarnerBrother
WarnerBrother - 3/27/2018, 1:24 AM
@Doomsday8888 -

With Dark Phoenix gone,November/December 2018 will be less packed and its likely
Aquaman or Bumblebee is going to move up to claim that spot. It would be a missed
opportunity for WB if they didn't take advantage of a holiday season without Marvel
Star Wars or (with the Disney/FOX merger) Avatar, in theaters sucking up the oxygen.
Odin

Odin
Odin - 3/27/2018, 11:00 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - I still hold on to the theory that reshoots are going to cut ties to Fox universe and tie it to MCU instead. This could be very interesting and different kind of introduction of mutants. Would also make sense with postponed release date.
L0RDbuckethead
L0RDbuckethead - 3/27/2018, 12:34 PM
@Odin - I could see it. FOX is definitely doing some behind the scenes shuffling for a reason. The Disney/FOX acquisition could be why.
WarnerBrother
WarnerBrother - 3/27/2018, 1:19 AM
Works better for WB's Aquaman which doesn't have a major superhero film coming out near it.

WB should move Aquaman forward to November 2018 to get away from Bumblebee and kick
off the holiday movie season the way Thor did last November and Wonder Woman 2 is slated
to do in 2019.

FOX could also be looking at Black Panther as evidence that releasing a major tent pole
in February could work to their advantage by thriving with weak competition around it.
Luminus
Luminus - 3/27/2018, 1:21 AM
@WarnerBrother - If that's their thinking, no wonder they're CBM failures.
