Channing Tatum Says LOGAN And DEADPOOL's Genre-Bending Success Has Fox Rethinking GAMBIT

Channing Tatum says the success of Ryan Reynold's Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Logan has led to a new approach on Gambit. But does that mean the Cajun thief's solo film outing will be rated R?

Despite Foxs SDCC panel focusing on Kingsman: The Golden Circle and not featuring any updates on Deadpool 2, New Mutants or X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Yahoo caught up with Tatum after the panel and focused extensively on what's happening with Gambit.

Said Tatum on the film's current status, “We got really lucky. We had a first draft it was good but we were coming to at a time at that creative phase of [the X-Men], where these movies went through a bit of a paradigm shift, where the X-Men movies and the superhero movies with Logan and Deadpool really broke down a lot of doors for us. We were trying to do some things that we actually weren’t allowed to do, and they just smashed down the doors, so we’re giving it a bit of a rethink.

But should fans take the influence of Deadpool and Logan as a sign that Gambit will be rated R?

"We’re not quite going there, because I enjoyed Gambit as a kid so I don’t want to rule out PG-13."

Since being formally announced in 2014, the Gambit movie Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman were both attached to direct but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.  The latest rumor is that Frank Darabont will rewrite and direct the film.  In 2015,  Léa Seydoux was attached to play Assassins Guild member Bella Donna Boudreaux  but it's currently unknown if she's still attached.

Not sure how I feel about a Gambit movie right now... could be good, but it is Fox and I hate them. But the individual films have been good recently. Ahhhhh so torn!

@Kman - Well Fox has more good/average films than bad so it may be good? I thought x:apoc and last stand were really okay for what they were not SS or BVS bad. Only real trash are F4 and W:origins

@mastakilla39 - I guess they're ok in comparison to some of the others... they're on an upward trend, Ill give them that. At least with solo films. I have more contempt for them about F4 and my wishes for the future of that property, more than anything.

@jerryblake - Gambit is not a character that needs to have a movie. What's to rethink? It's not like they're gonna make the greatest heist movie ever seen. It's just gonna be Romeo vs Juliet.

Why not make a Jubilee movie while you're at it?

@Doomsday8888 - That King Arthur movie was terrible and I'm a huge Guy Ritchie fan. He's only good for his "type" of film.

Gambit deserves to be known and loved by all audiences, imo. He's not Logan, neither Deadpool, neither Batman, so he can be a general audience favourite easily.

Antman mixed with Bourne franchise and you have a winner.

I think I love this movie already.

now, if only dark phoenix wasn't in the hands of a complete hack, this franchise would be king.
