Could GAMBIT Be A Period Film? Channing Tatum Teases An Unique Direction

"You never know what time [period] it's going to be set in," was the recent tease from Gambit lead Channing Tatum. Will director Rupert Wyatt and Tatum set Gambit in the '60s, '70s, '80s or '90s?

While promoting Magic Mike XXL, actor Channing Tatum spoke with CBR about his progress on the solo Gambit film from 20th Century Fox.  Tatum cautioned that it's still early in the development process but he and director Rupert Wyatt are both keyed in on making the film stand out from other superhero films.  Said Tatum, "We're so early in it.  I really have some things in mind, but who knows -- it's pretty fluid at this point. I do believe that [director] Rupert [Wyatt] and I have the exact same vision of what we want to do. We want it to be different. I think Gambit is a really specific sort of character to not do some of these other things that some of the other superheroes kind of have to do. It's who they are. I think his character lends itself to doing something maybe slightly different. "

Wrapping up the conversation, Tatum said something rather interesting regarding the possibility of Gambit not being a present-day film.  "Who knows?  You never know what time [period] it's going to be set in."

Fox has already shown they're not afraid to set their X-Men films in different time periods. First Class was set in the '60s, Days of Future Past was set in the '70s and X-Men: Apocalypse is set to tackle the '80s.  Could Gambit be set in the '90s? Or will Tatum and Wyatt double back and set the film in a time period that one of the X-Men films previously tackled? We should learn more details as we near SDCC 2015. Stay posted to CBM for the latest details.

It will be interesting to see how Fox handles the X-men movie time period problem. I could easily see Gambit taking place after Apocalypse in the 80's or early 90's. It would make a lot of sense considering where the X-men movies find themselves stuck.

Gambit should be set in the 1980's along with X-Men: Apocalypse, and I would have Gambit doing his own solo adventure (obviously). While The X-Men are fighting Apocalypse, I would have Remy trying to still some Apocalypse technology. Or you can have Remy fight the assassin's guild.

@DrDoom Why do you hate Gambit so much? Lol

I'm getting more excited about this film with each piece of news. Having it be a period piece is a great idea, and it would set it apart from a lot of the other superhero movies coming out around it.

If they use Clarmont's original ideas, then it could be set in any time period and end with Sinister putting Remy into cryogenic stasis, Winter Soldier style.

Why the Frick would they set gambit in the 60s or 70s or in the past period ?if there trying to fix the character and have em be with rouge and part of the xmen then set em in present day where he belongs

In reality, this movie should be set in development hell, if it weren't for Channing Tatum. But, this movie can still be worth watching, depending on how it's done.

On one hand, I wonder how they'll deal with the different historic eras because eventually we'll need to be in modern day.
On the other hand, I love the idea of an X-Force film set in the 90s. It's just so fitting.
Days of Future Present could fix some things. Link X-Men and FF. Have people time traveling rather than minds.
OR
Send the X-Men to the Shi'ar galaxy. By the time they get back, decades could have passed on Earth.

@Real Mandarin
For one thing, Gambit was present at Weapon X when Wolverine was given adamantium. And if Claremont had his way, Gambit would have been in that orphanage with Cyclops.

Gambit sucks, DrDoom is right. Gambit is a vacuous character created purely to be superficially cool and appeal to teenagers. Ooo, trenchcoat, smokes, stubble , throws exploding cards, ladies love him, he's got a bo staff and a cool accent. 90's tripe.

I don't like him as an actor and I'm very skeptical of him being Gambit.

@TheRealMandarin
That's how the comics went down. Gambit was stealing files from Weapon X for Mr Sinister. That's why he was in Wolverine Origins.
And he doesn't need to be anywhere near the XMen right now. The thing that made him so unique is that he was a heroic figure who sought out help from villains instead of other heroes. That's what will make him dubious to everyone.
This movie should be about the Thieves Guild and Sinister. He can meet the X-Men after the Morlock Massacre when he realizes how big of a mistake he made.

@rabid dude you right about this being an origin film all I'm saying is that his origin should be placed in modern day if not the happy future of the xmen
