My View of the Timeline for the X-Men Movie Universe

This is my view of the X-men movie universe... as messed up as it is, I hope it will be fixed up soon. Hit the jump for more.

I've been re-watching these movies to get my hype up a little bit for the upcoming "X-Men: Days of Future Past", and I've been trying to figure out what is so wrong with the timeline.

I figured out that if I started with the worst of the series, everything will get better from there on forward and so I started with "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". And yes it did... "X-Men" & 'X2", still good and great as the first day I saw them, and when it was time for "X-Men: The Last Stand", it didn't bothered me that much as before because there was "The Wolverine" extended edition (finally some blood and those claws) to fix the series and keep me interested in watching. "X-Men: First Class" I saved for last (my favorite) and my overall judgement of these X-Men movies actually improved a little.
X-Men (7)
X2 (8)
X-Men: The Last Stand (6)
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (3.5)
X-Men: The First Class (9)
The Wolverine (Extended Edition) (8)

X-Men film series (6.9)

Not that bad for a messed up movie universe... actually... it's not that messed up neither. Few things that has yet to be explained, and I hope it will be somehow, are: how is Professor X still walking from time to time, and how is Beast changing back to human form.
I am fine with Sabertooth not being explained why he is the way he is by the time of "X-Men", I don't care for Emma Frost, and we have yet to see what happens with Toad.

So here is my view (and actually the view) of the timeline for the X-Men Movie Universe.

What is Your opinion on their timeline? And do You think that it's gonna get fixed with "X-Men: Days of Future Past"?

wow that makes sense i like this. but the only thing is how do we explain emma frost? the whole beast thing with him being human in X2 could be how he appears regular in x-men DOFP. Since the sentinels exist in the 70s that explains why the danger room is able to make one in X3. after the events of Last stand the government reintroduces the sentinels.

Well thought out, but frankly, I don't even think Singer will put that much thought into it. And I really doubt he's concerned with the continuity of Origins:Wolverine.

I have a feeling this movie will have a handful of unexplained continuity errors (especially with Origins:W) and it will completely reset the timeline with the younger cast.

Wolverine gets sent to prevent something in the past and the instant he accomplishes this task the future is changed (and we will at most only get a glimpse of that future as a sending off for the old cast). The movie will end however with the younger cast, in the 70s, and a set up for Apocalypse.

So my guess is that this movie will end outside of the current continuity. Once Wolverine gets sent back, we're in an alternate timeline, which will be the main timeline going forward, farewell to the old cast.

Here's my pseudo-timeline based on my split timeline theory...

TIMELINE 1
First Class
X-Men
X2
The Last Stand
The Wolverine
Days of Future Past (Future Scenes)

TIMELINE 2
First Class
Days of Future Past (Past Scenes)
Apocalypse

Wolverine gets sent back in time which creates the second timeline and effectively creates a blank slate for what is to come. And I think Apocalypse will take place in this new timeline.

In Days of Future Past, when Logan's consciousness from the future leaves his past body (at the end of the movie I assume), does that mean that the past Logan wouldn't have known anything that happened throughout the movie? I think they should explain that if they are going to keep X-Men: Origins within the continuity.
Humby
Humby - 1/28/2014, 1:08 AM
@Kurne - I think it's most likely that Logan's consciousness will be stuck in the past.
Humby

But that's based on my double timeline theory. So if there is no double timeline, then yeah, I sure hope they explain it, because otherwise that's a pretty big plot hole.

Nice one mate.

I just hope its all sorts itself out after DOFP.

@Humby @Kurne - My guess is that the movie ends outside of the continuity. Wolverine returns to his future self, everything is fine in the future, Cyclops and Jean are still alive (at least I hope)... In the past, Professor X knows that he needs to find Jean and he knows where to find Cyclops, Gambit and Wolverine. So maybe they will all be in "Apocalypse" and that movie is set around 10 years after DOFP, maybe 1986 ;)
Wishful thinking, I know.

Have we forgot that the Three Mile Island accident (presumably a cover-up for the events of 'Origins') actually occurred in 1979? This places Logan's tenure with Team X during 1973 at the latest, and before that he was in Vietnam...one could suppose that the events of DOFP for past Wolverine occur after he has left Team X. My question in such a case is why cast such a young William Stryker? I may love the X-Men films (even 'Origins' gets a 7.5/10 from me-a higher rating than 'The Avengers' :P) but this is some timey-wimey bullshit.

@DatNerdyKid - Now You got me :) I didn't know about that, I'm not from United States and that accident was 7 years before I was even born. Oh well...

Nice write up but I think Humby has the right idea. My timelines are here;

How 'DAYS OF FUTURE PAST' Is An Inbetwequel & Will Unite All The X-Men Films Before X-MEN: APOCALYPSE - http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/SuperheroSpeculation/news/?a=92543

With First Class being a prequel certain things have to happen to make the 'Wolverine:Origins/X1/X2/X3/TheWolverine' timeline make sense as at the moment they don't match up.

We will either have different timelines, or events in DoFP will change things so (for example) Xavier is walking again...

Wolverine going back to the seventies won't change what happenned in the 60s.

Singer's actually stated that Days of Future Past's 2023 portion is 10 years after The Last Stand, not 20. This retroactively places X1 and X2 in 2012, and X3 in 2013.

Humby

@Gliderman - I really don't see this being one timeline.

This will be the start of a new timeline that branches off after First Class. The only reason they're putting the original cast in the movie is to have them pass the torch, because Fox made the mistake of treating First Class as a prequel.

The movie will effectively phase out the original cast, it's a blank slate. Most of the future mutants won't have more than 3-5 minutes of screen time, I guarantee it.

What I think will happen...

Logan's mind must go into the past to stop an event in Firsf Class-era. He wakes up in his old body somewhere in Origins after he got Adamantium. Then meet the FC mutants and stop whatever it is from happening..thereby retcon-ing Origins, X1, X2, X3 and Wolverine from everyone's mind except his own and the future/past mutants he works with.

Which leaves: Deadpool, Gambit, Colossus, Cyclops, Jean, and Angel opened for future use.

Good speculation.
I think that timeline is good. I think the timelines will be split creating a new alternate time line due to the events that will happen in 1973 that will change the X-men and it's story arcs from the first X-men films.

Theres one flaw I see in the timeline when it comes to XO: Wolverine

U have 1986 as being its been 6 years since Logan has last seen Stryker in the movie...

But how can that be if the end of XO: Wolverine takes place during the Three Mile Island accident which happened in 1979 and Logan losing his memory because of Stryker?

XO : Wolverine was never set in the 80's

Explain...

@DatNerdyKid

Interesting theory about how DOFP will take place after Wolverine leaves Team X

But I have a feeling the film will be set before he joins Team X or meets Stryker seeing as how Stryker seems to look like he's very young from the Empire cover and rumours are hes creating his first Mutant Unit that will have Havok and Toad on the team, hence why they are wearing army clothing on their covers.

I know his younger look shouldn't mean much, but thats just my guess on when in Logans life DOFP will occur in the past :]

@MexicanSuperman

@blacksuperhero4

Emma doesn't get a last name in the fim or credits, but if u look up the character promos from the film, she states her name is Emma Frost

Another fact that makes XO: Wolverine even more confusing

C'mon guys, where is the post with the scribbly lines, meant to be X-Men's timeline? We almost always get that in this articles...
WYLEEJAY
WYLEEJAY - 1/28/2014, 8:15 PM
Well the Marvel comics database has her classified as Emma Silverfox. Its a retcon they actually did a couple years ago. I think it got changed when First Class was in production. So your supposed to ignore her resembling Emma Frost in appearance and ONE of her powers. They never showed her use telepathy in the theatrical cut. Fox wants you to accept the coincidence. You dont have to, but Marvel did what they could with Foxs mistake.

@BANE5000
It's less of a theory and more of me attempting to make sense of this screwed-up timeline. I personally think that the past events would and should occur prior to 'Origins' as well, given Stryker's young age, but I mean...this whole thing is screwed.
Why didn't they just get Danny Huston...
DatNerdyKid
DatNerdyKid - 1/29/2014, 3:31 AM
Also-I may have said that I quite liked 'Origins' as a film, but it completely screws up the timeline. With the Three Mile Island accident taking place in 1979, this pulls the original 'X-Men' trilogy back to 1994/1995 instead of the 'near future', placing 'The Wolverine' in the late 90's and placing the 'Days of Future Past' future in approximately the present time. And none of these films look like they occur in these time periods. Even 'Origins' doesn't really look 70's enough...doesn't even look 80's.

Let's disregard logic and see if Singer can pull a Donnie Darko on us and make his time travelling logic all by himself.
