Nicholas Hoult "Frustrated" By Some Superhero Movies - "They're Just Packaging"

There seems to be some indirect shots fired at Marvel Studios in this recent interview with Nicholas Hoult, in which, the Mad Max: Fury Road star explains why he's frustrated with some superhero movies and implies the X-Men franchise is superior. Check it out after the jump!

When Nicholas Hoult sat down with NME magazine for an extensive cover story interview, the British actor was asked about the current state of superhero movies, having played the mutant Hank McCoy, aka Beast, in X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past, and the upcoming Apocalypse.

"At times I’ll see superhero movies and admittedly be frustrated by them," said Hoult. "It does feel like some are just packaging and they’re not trying hard enough because they know it’s a bankable formula." The Mad Max star did not specify which superhero films he's referring to, but it's likely the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, many of which have been described as formulaic.

Regardless, Nicholas Hoult later reassured that the "packaging" criticism does not apply to his ever-growing mutant franchise. "I love the X-Men films because they have a heart to them and you have actors like Michael Fassbender who brings so much to the characters," he explained. "The superheroes in that world aren't smug. You don't want to watch someone who you know is going to win from the start just being awesome for two hours." That sounds fair... What do you think?

Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-Men: Apocalypse, opening in theaters everywhere May 27, 2016. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from total destruction.

I hate his comments because he's with a company I don't like and people with the company I don't like are stupid. Only people from the company I like are smart.

Expect those types of intelligent comments here folks.

It seemed fanboys started to like Hoult after Mad Max, but now he's screwed it all up.

@LEVI exactly, unfortunately. This community is dense.

I actually agree *to a certain extent*, but these are great times to be alive as a fan.

The Fox-Men have heart? Lol! All it has is Wolverine, Prof. X, Magneto, Mystique, and a bunch of punching bag fan service characters. GTFO, Hoult.

Can't wait to see the franchise crash and burn since Hugh is leaving Wolverine.

@NOMIS: I know you're an old school cat and hate the fact that the movies don't feature the classic costumes, and that's fair. But they're very critically and commercially lauded movies. Except for maybe X-3 and Origins, those are shit-water.

He has sucked as Beast so far. He was great in Mad Max, but we all know he's going to suck in Apocalypse.

Yes, Marvel Studios' movies are formulaic, but Fox is trying to copy that formula themselves.

He's defending the X-Men franchise that has squandered the most potential in comic book movie history just so they can keep riding Hugh Jackman. Meanwhile, MS shows them how to actually adapt their characters rather than apologizing for them.

We've gotten 5 X-Men movies, and the formula has been the same in every single one e.g. Wolverine, Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique fighting among themselves. That's why I am kind of happy that after 'Apocalypse', we'll be seeing less of Wolverine, Magneto, and Mystique.
HAILHYDRA
HAILHYDRA - 11/5/2015, 12:36 PM
FOX paid a crap ton of money for the X-Men and all they do is apologize for them by taking away the aesthetic that made the X-Men so awesome.
