Ryan Reynolds Wants to Take on Cable in a Deadpool Movie

While chatting to MTV, Ryan Reynolds discussed which characters Deadpool could go up against if he were to get a spinoff movie...

“There are all kinds of villains,” Reynolds told MTV News during a “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” press event. “You’ve got Black Tom — all kinds of characters that you could really make great use of.”

Black Tom, the villainous cousin of the heroic mutant known as Banshee, is just one of many bad guys that could find their way into a ‘Deadpool’ solo film. But there’s at least one specific character that Reynolds would love to see go against Deadpool — the futuristic soldier called Cable.

“The ‘Deadpool/Cable’ stuff is great,” the actor remarked. “I’ve never really cast that character in my head. He’s such a complicated character.”

Cable, the white-haired telepathic X-Man, has one of the more complicated histories in comic books — in fact, some would even call his past convoluted at best. As the future-born son of Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, Cable has a history that’s confused both comic readers and characters alike for the better part of two decades — which is why Reynolds says the character deserves his own solo film before tangoing with Deadpool.

“I wish they would do a ‘Cable’ movie first, just to explain the guy,” Reynolds said. “And then they could do a ‘Deadpool vs. Cable’ kind of thing.”

Reynolds’ desire might be closer to reality than you’d think. When Marvel recently announced their initiative to hire writing staffs for feature films, “Cable” was name-dropped as one property that the company plans to develop. Perhaps an on-screen Deadpool/Cable confrontation isn’t that far away!

Hmmm... Who could play Cable???

JMO, but Ron Perlman could do it.. He has that older look but could still be a bad ass...

i'm not hating on cable but he does not deserve his own movie, they can just simplify the crap out of his backstory like they do most comic book movies, especially in the x-men movie series.

He's a soldier from a post apocolyptic future, enough said, we dont need to get into the whole summers/grey thing. The writers will drop it anyway because its way too complicated for movie audiences.

Just the first thing that came into my head-- I feel like Bruce Willis would make a convincing Cable. He pulls off that old tough guy, and has enough experience acting to pull off the subtler character traits as well. thoughts?

Micheal Beihn for Cable!

If they want to introduce Cable, introduce him in a NEW X-MEN movie.

...and make Apocolypse the villain.

That would work out perfectly. Otherwise, they would never be able to stay somewhat close to his story in the comics...and that would piss alot of fans off.

"JMO, but Ron Perlman could do it.. He has that older look but could still be a bad ass..."

I wouldn't be adverse to it, because I love Ron Perlman. I've even seen the entire Beauty and the Beast soap! But he is kinda gettin' flabby in his old age. I picture Cable as just freakin' stacked.

Cable wont work regardless he has his own movie or play the villain (WTF?) in a Deadpool movie (Double WTF?). Reynolds was right when he said Cable is a complicated character and the filmakers will probably water him down, stir him silly and become a totally different character that would resemble Ahnuld's Terminator and id hate to see that.

dellamorte. Deadpool fught Black Tom and the Juggernaut bitch in his first two limited series, in fact they were the main villains of his second mini series.

Cable needs to be introduced before this as in X4 or an X-Force movie

Cable first appeared in an X-Men story arc called 'X-Tinction Agenda'(if I'm not mistaken). That story would be the best way to intro him, plus you get Genosha, the Magistrates, and Cameron Hodge to play with... and Sentinels... can't forget Sentinels.

If they do Cable it will deffo be a bastardized version. They will prob keep the time travel stuff but there will be no mention of Cyclops...maybe they will hint at him having a mysterious family connection. As far as it being too complicated, well maybe if your an idiot! And im aware that there are a lot of idiots out there, but hell if they can wrap they're heads around the Terminator movies, this wouldnt be that different.

Casting wise i reckon David Morse would be good..hes the guy from Green Mile and The Crossing Guard, looks the part and is a great actor

Weapon420 - 4/29/2009, 7:11 AM
if they do try a cable film they should make it where he saves cyclops and prevents everything that happened in X3, that way we can pretend it never happened, he is a time traveler, maybe have a cameo by bishop like the cartoon, lol.

Myth,
AWESOME choice in Michael Biehn. That guy is such an awesome actor for these types of roles. I just gotta ask you, though-- where did you come up with the idea to put him as a main character in a movie where he is a soldier who travels from the post-apocalyptic future to the past? (Just kidding.) I gotta admit, he never would've popped in my mind and I'm one of the biggest "Terminator" fans on the planet. I'm good at thinking of stories but I usually suck at suggesting actors.

And another A for you today with the recommendation of the "X-Tinction Agenda" storyline. I'll take it a step further... How about "X4: X-tinction Agenda"? We could find out that Cyclops isn't really dead since we never saw it happen (which I have said on here a million times) and they could maybe even introduce Madelyne Pryor (I know it's a stretch but let's face it-- Jean Grey shouldn't be dead yet either). Then we factor in the Muir Island aspect of the story with the return of Professor X and introducing Banshee, all while incorporating Genosha and the creation of The Sentinels... AND in the meantime (this one's for you!) setting up the debut of Mr. Sinister & Apocalypse for the next 3 X-films (X4-X6).

What do you think? I don't expect everyone to love the Madelyne Pryor idea.

LOL yeah I know this pic looks bad, but I did in in about 2mins on MS paint so ... yeah lol...

I Think he would play a better cable and even looks more the part of cable then the punisher.

Ray Stevenson, as Cable.

Wishful thinking, considering that FOX owns movie Deadpool and Marvel Studios has the idea for Cable. Maybe a Cable vs. Trevor Fitzroy story might be good. Bruce Willis might do a good Cable.

Apocalypse in a movie would be tits but most likely a pipe dream for now.

I would love to see a Cable movie as long as they got a good actor to portray him. THey need to introduce him in an X-Men movie first as a backup character.
They need a big guy or a decent sized guy to play him. Not a scrawny guy. I know they cant find a real guy that big that can act but i saw this guy once at a gym...he was probably 6'2 or 6'3 probably 250 to 265 and just ripped with shaved white hair. Looked just like cable. For those of you who are hating on Liefeld, we wouldnt have Cable or Deadpool if it wasnt for him. If he draws so bad, then why was he one of the top creators in the 90's? I would like to see you draw half as good as him.
FYI, Cable first appeared in New Mutants before Xtinction Agenda. And Fitzroy was mainly Bishops enemy. Cable vs. Stryfe! That would tie into his origin too.

Deadpool can't carry a comic book on his own, so a Cable team up would suit perfectly
MetalHead
MetalHead - 4/29/2009, 9:09 AM
I personally think it would be better if in whatever film(s) they have Cable's origin take place-- if at all-- that they leave it mysterious but make it apparent to the audience that they are intentionally making it mysterious and not so it just seems confusing to everyone. Give little pieces of his history and little teasers to the diehard fans, but don't do anything too definitively because as long as its done loosely then the inaccuracies to the "real" story won't be so blatently confirmed and therefore won't annoy the diehard fans as much as it has the potential to.

Myth,
Still loving that Michael Biehn suggestion.

DEADPOOL will be able to carry a comic book, when DEADPOOL movie comes out! CABLE would be cool, but i dread to think what FOX would do to CABLE??? That's a character you cant really mess with??? An they would need a actor like ARNOLD to play him, and no i don't mean ARNOLD, just like him! A CABLE movie would be cool first, have him Time traveling and stuff and even have him banded the X-FORCE group at the end!!! Though CABLE can have something to do with saving CYCLOPS in X3!!!! After all CYCLOPS disappears, and CABLE and him are blood! Infact that could be the reason CABLE becomes a Time traveller in the movies!!! I know its abit much, but they could do it easy!!! ; ) P.s. Im liking what your saying @ METALHEAD @ that would sooo work!!! :thumbs

Someone needs to email FOX a link to these threads. We come up with so many better ideas than they have over there and they're all ideas that could work and wouldn't cause them extra work, extra money, difficult character development, alienating certain audiences, etc. I can see why accurately telling Wolverine's, Cable's, Phoenix's, etc., origins would be very difficult to do on film while being accurate to the comics, but we've come up with so many ideas on here for how to avoid a lot of the difficult issues that they'd face. So annoying that a lot of the answers are right on here and they don't even know it.

Another great Cable would be Clancy Brown. He might be just a tad too old now, but hes still in great shape and they guy has voiced more comic characters in animated series than anyone else. He also looks just like Cable and is a big bag of awesomeness. He was in Highlander, Shawshank, and most recently Lost.

Come on, does no one think Ray Stevenson as Cable would be good, yes I know he was the punisher, and I hate when the use the same actor over and over, but I think he looks more like Cable then punisher. My crappy Photoshop pic says it all lol.

Sorry, no offense Yohon but I'm so sold on Michael Biehn now that if they DON'T use him I'm gonna be pissed. His face is perfect. I can totally see him with the shoulder pad things he used to wear and with the scar and the eye. And now that I think about it, he kinda looks like he'd be the offspring of Cyclops. Myth, I'm gonna hate you for suggesting that awesome idea if this doesn't end up happening now!
