Wolverine, a second time around

Wolverine, a second time around

Here again to review the finished product, and compare it to my earlier review, so now i'm back for round 2.

Review Opinion
By JD22 - May 02, 2009 11:05 PM EST

Ok so I saw and wrote the first review of the wolverine movie based off the work print, posted it on march 31st (http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/scoops/news/?a=6824), taken down the next day, but I think reposted in the comments section. So those were my initial thoughts, and I gave it 5/10.

Now I have seen it in theaters and I have to say that some feelings changed and some stayed the same.

Ok so for those who are wondering, YES fox did lie to us fans. They claimed they added 10 minutes of extra footage(supposedly of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman) but absolutely nothing was added or edited differently from the work print. Way to go fox, just keep lying till this whole thing blows over. Anyways Old News.

Again I was thoroughly impressed with the performances of Hugh, Taylor Kitsch, Danny Huston, and Ryan Reynolds. Everyone else could have been played by someone else just as well, if not better. There was no character development beside Wolverine, now granted I realize the movie is his, but that doesn’t mean you should focus solely on the development of that character only. I have also been told by the group I went with (many who aren’t comic fans) that it was hard to care for any of the characters and too many seemed to be just thrown in there for namesake(blob was mentioned the most).

For some reason this just doesn’t feel like enough, I think they could have made a better film if they cut some characters, added some length, and tried not to dumb down this film for general audiences, I mean it seems the writers read the characters bios on wikipedia and threw together a script(Emma Frost is Silver Fox's little sister, really?). The editing is probably still the worst aspect of the film, this is has a very poor flow to it, which just adds to the feel that the editor had no idea what he was doing here. Also the WHOLE movie felt a bunch of random action thrown together, every scene seemed like it was leading up to a fight, with no story in between fight. Where there is some story, its crap, and not even gripping, I could have not even paid attention and I would have had all the plot points down(that’s not good for a film fyi). The film still seemed very boring and unnecessary in the middle, but maybe a little less so without the track bar to skip with. CONTROVERSY AHEAD!!! Honestly I could have lived without this or the upcoming Magneto movie, I mean the first 3 films were based all around these guys, why not give some other characters a chance? This whole thing just feels very unnecessary to the xmen film series.

OK now to the CGI…..WOW how many ways can I say this? Well to put it briefly. CRAP. It looks like the work of a college student, actually I’ve seen better effect in a college students film than this. They should have had some balls and used practical effects for the claws, like 1 &2. I thought they were going to actually fix the stuff from the workprint, but really besides the noticeable things (cgi building/planes) the effects are just as bad.

The action was just the basic eye candy one would expect, explosions, slashes, and basic senseless destruction. Although some of the fights/ action were ok, theres no standout fight, there all kinda he same. Also I found it weird that Sabertooth would just randomly show up and fight wolvie, plus I thought the fought too many times in the film.

Another thing that really bothered me this time around was the whole escape from lab part. Ok so throughout the first 2 films they show us these awesome, bloody, and amazing operation and escape clips. But here, we get a small 2 minute mad dash for the door. REALLY. I thought at one point that wolvie would start to casually stroll out the door.

As a fan of the comics I loathe this film, but if I was just a general audience member who just saw the first 3, would probably like it, thus the reason why it will make bank this weekend.

Ok so positives…..?
-some of the performance
-some of the fights/action were ok, nothing special, just the basic eye candy.

Negatives
-overall weak/bad story
-no respect for the source material
-taking those ‘liberties’ with the characters
-the CGI/effects
I know I was criticized before for watching and judging the unfinished product, but I’m just going to say, told ya so. This movie was disappointing the first time and even more the second time. This film really just seems like a ploy of Fox’s to milk their license for what its worth, and I think this is evident in the fact they lied to the fans, and just threw more characters in there to get fan boys pumped up to see it.

Oh ya I got the deadpool after credit scene, and it really doesn’t fix anything. Fox seems to have shot it last week and threw it in there since the other one was seen so negatively. It does nothing to remove he massive raping that the deadpool character received throughout the film, and it just seems really cheap of fox to put in there to try and cover their asses.

So yep final rating :

4.5 - 5/10

I agree with most of it. Plus i got the same old japan ending. FART! 5.5/10

And what was with the obvious posing? Wolvie with his arms out, claws pointing down so you can see all three claws at all times. The scene were wolvie comes back to save fox from victor, he comes in on the other side of the room, all of his clothes are suddenly off except for the tank top, and he's looking down and posing like he'd been there the whole time.

So he hears or smells victor, runs back to the lab, finds and alternate rt into the facility undetected, takes off five layers of clothing, walks into the fully lit room, kneals down and poses in front of some bright xray lights and yells victor before anyone sees him up to that point?

AND when he elbows gambit in the face, five seconds later gambit is running back across roof tops from like 100 yds away to rejoin the fight. Thats a hell of an elbow wolvie! He must have collosus punch in his elbow!

AND the claws. You go from lumpy bone claws to metal blades with lighting edges? Was that part of plan or an awesome side effect?

In fact the more i see the claws the more i believe it is ridiculously impossible. What stops them? Why dont they shoot out, never to be recovered? He'd be a clawed six shooter. What keeps them from moving up and down in his hand? How can he retract them when his wrist is bent? Why dont they rip out when he tries to cut through something? What braces them?

I have to agree with you. There was just too much wrong with this movie. I liked it but it could have been way better. Their liberties pretty much sucked except for the Wolverine/ Sabertooth being brothers thing. I could actually see that happening more than anything else in the movie. I really don't like how none of the superhero guys except for Spider-man and Daredevil are getting their costumes right. What was up with Johnathan and Martha in the Wolverine movie? lol

THERES A BAR OF QUALITY, ITS = WATCHMEN, IRON MAN, TDK, Hell, even INCREDIBLE HULK was 10 times better than this, though i like that alot!!! leee777 No way was the Incred Hulk better than this. Both hulk movies sucked.Okay the new one sucked less, but The Hulk would never be a good movie unless he fights some heros.

LEEE777 - 5/4/2009, 12:44 PM
THE INCREDIBLE HULK was a great movie!!! I came outta the cinema so pumped, with WOLVERINE it was ' WTF was that'! IF an i say IF FOX put an extra 30 minutes or so on it, it would've been better movie but with all the plot holes and messing about with the characters and powers and not a speck of blood! It was just plain RUSHED and sad!!!! Seriously there's better stories in the WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN cartoon!!! Im sorry but even the first HULK was better than this! Talking HULK, how cool would it be if MARVEL done some kinda deal with FOX to have WOLVERINE against THE HULK in INCREDIBLE HULK 2!!!? Wouldn't that just be the best!!! ; )
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 5/4/2009, 4:39 PM
Well MARVEL owns the right to them both @ marcolanni @ if that what you mean?? An yeah, hopefully it'll be the same cast this time round! Although ERIC BANA was a cool Bruce Banner too!!!

Leee777: once again I agree with you WOLVERINE missed the mark and that reboot HULK was SWEET. Like I've SAID IN MY PAST POST I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT WAS SO GREAT ABOUT BRYAN "SWEET CHEEKS" SINGER's X-MEN films....to me they're highly overrated. Maybe alot of people loved the hot black sexy leather... you know THE Village People type get -ups LOL. Oh sweet cheeks just keeping it SWEET ..JUST like he did with Superman Returns really sweet love story. I just thought this movie was going to be like Ironman or Hulk but it didnt happen it barely passed in my book with a low C grade.

LEEE777 - 5/4/2009, 9:30 PM
BLADE4040 @ Yeah, WOLVERINE was a pure let down!!! After all that HYPE is was so lame! Its a real pity!
BLADE4040
BLADE4040 - 5/4/2009, 9:58 PM
Im glad you mention the hype because on another tread I post the reason Wolverine is pulling in money right now. its because of all the hype it got lets see how it stands after a week and the word really gets out about the movie. I'll have to say the actors were fine I think this is 100% writers, directors, and anyother studio big brain that had input on this movie.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 5/4/2009, 10:15 PM
I have to agree BLADE4040 with ya again man lol! Your right, an the actors were spot on, though i still think dodgy GAMBIT accent but he looked perfect for GAMBIT! I want it to make money, so studios think yeah we can green light our movie but not too much that that gives the green light to make crap comic book movies! Damn its a fine line lol! : D
