Woverine Sequel Cemented Already

Just two days after Hugh Jackman's domination of the box office—Box Office Mojo estimates the film's worldwide gross at $158.2 million and counting—comes the rather unsurprising word that a follow-up to the origin story is already in the works.

According to Variety, the sequel, which will mark Jackman's fifth time donning the killer claws, will focus on the X-Men comic's samurai storyline, the Japanese locale setup for which is teased after the blockbuster film's end credits.

Meanwhile, the action star Oscar host is showing no signs of slowing—or being typecast—with no fewer than four other projects in the works, one of which will be a 2010 return to Broadway as the titular Houdini.

Rounding out today's star-studded castings: Ben Stiller, Christina Aguilera, Wilmer Valderrama, Peter Dinklage, Ken Watanabe and the newest Mad Man.

As for Jackman's big screen ambitions, he's looking to reteam with his Oscars duet partner Anne Hathaway in the big screen adaptation of the musical Carousel. Per the trade, he's also on board to star in the race car-centric Drive and as an heiress-protecting NYC detective in Personal Security.

Seriously, how can they stretch that story into a 2-hour movie that isn't boring? Unless they get into the Alpha Flight, Hulk & Captain America stuff, too, which they can't due to not owning the rights to those characters. Enough origin story, write and work on the X4-X6 trilogy.

I'm fine with a second Origins movie. Silver Samurai would be freaking awesome, and maybe they'll also have Omega Red in this one as one of the villains; he's also a really cool Wolvi baddie.

Hopefully this one will finally tie the knot between Wolvi's origins and X1, and then they can finally get to work on some new X-men sequels.

Here's how you bring back everyone for the next trilogy:

-We somehow see a flashback scene to immediately after Jean is killed in "X2." We see Sinister finding her unconscious body. (Perhaps the scene is shown through Sinister's mind while Professor X is reading it with Cerebro.) We learn that Sinister brought Jean to his lab, cloned her (making Madelyn Pryor) used the clone to lure Scott to Alkali Lake, kidnapped him as well and then we learn that it was Madelyn Pryor who was The Phoenix. After all, we never actually even saw Cyclops die. (Hey, the F'ed up the rest of the story, why not F that up too??? At least now we can have Cable!)

-Moira McTaggert contacts Storm and Wolverine and they fly to Muir Island to find Professor X in his new body (as seen after the credits in "X3"). While there, we also learn that Moira had been researching the cure which was used in "X3." We learn that it was not stable and therefore was not a permanent fix to any mutant who had already had the X-gene completely throughout their DNA. For example, any mutant who had already gone through puberty and had been given the cure would eventually regain their abilities. This allows for the return of Rogue if they feel it necessary... and the returns of Magneto and Mystique.

See, simple? Now make the next 3 and don't F them up this time!

@Macksimus, sorry Bro it won't be an X-men sequel it will be a pre-quel. Haven't you heard that's the new rage in Hollywood these days. Am I the only one that wants to know how Sabretooth got that way in X-men 1. In the comics they talked about secondary mutation, maybe that's what happened to him. Guess that would explain the almost 7ft tall height and blacked out pupils.

Gunsmith,
I wrote a HUGE thing on how I'd do "X4"-"X6" on a different thread. I said what I'd do would be to write it as a trilogy with the first part centered around Genosha & the creation of the Sentinels, with Cameron Hodge running Genosha but we'd get hints that Apocalypse is behind it all and meanwhile the battle to get Jean and Scott back from Sinister would be the climax. "X5" would be Apocalypse's first real appearance with a huge battle on Genosha between the X-Men alongside Magneto against an army of Sentinels. For the cliffhanger ending to "X5" they could show Angel leaving for Europe to volunteer for a new cure since he would now hate his appearance. And finally in "X6" he'd become Archangel and the X-Men would battle Apocalypse and the Four Horsemen.

That's just a significantly shorter summary, but you get the idea. I went into WAY more details when I planned it out originally. Here's the link to the long version for anyone who cares:

I would LOVE to see the Japan story next!
Throw in a couple scenes of him in neighboring Madripoor, under an assumed identity (wink, wink) trying to track down some more information about his abduction, and the people responsible for the adamantium bonding process (Kenji Oyama: Lord Dark Wind, Lady Deathstrike's father).
He travels to Japan, and immediately is stonewalled by Kenuichio Harada and Shiro Yoshida (Silver Samurai and Sunfire)and a group of Hand ninjas. Make Lord Dark Wind the Lord Imperial of the Hand.
He falls in love with Mariko, she gets killed, he kills Lord Dark Wind in a samurai style battle, end credits.

I'd prefer Logan didn't kill Darkwind, instead, do it like the books where Logan swears an oath of vengeance and comes to remove a body part from him every year on the day of Mariko's death.

@Metalhead: You must not read much comics. There is enough solid material for Wolverine to make 3-4 more solo movies. 'd like to see Cyber and Alpha Flight in a third one myself.

Wow, I just read up on Xmen: First Class, and I have to say it sounds kind of dumb.

@Metalhead
A trilogy involving Archangel, Apoc, Sinister, Cable, and the 4 horsemen sounds bad ass. I'm down for a trilogy; I guess it makes sense to spread it out over a set of movies rather than just one (which is what I wanted originally). That way they could make alot of money and develop more characters and storylines.

The Apoc, Sinister, and Cable's story is one of the most interesting stories in the X'men universe. IMO it is THE most interesting story.

No Myth, I have them all. I wasn't saying that nothing happened between the time the movie took place and when the first X-Men movie came out, I was implying that I'd rather see them move forward with the X-Men storyline instead cause I'm a bigger fan of the group as a whole than I am of just Wolverine. Yes, there is plenty left of his origin, but there's still plenty of the X-Men stories that haven't been touched, either, and I'd rather see that than the Japan storyline.

And also I guess I just feel like it wouldn't be something that they'd be able to capture well and a lot of those stories are just better for the comic books. And there are some comic books that wouldn't translate well to film. This particular one is just my opinion and maybe I'm wrong. Again, it all comes back to me preferring that they'd go back to the X-Men series instead.

And not to mention that's assuming that they actually stick to the story, I suppose, which they won't. They'll probably put some other random people in there like they did with Gambit. I would like to see more of Liev Schreiber though.
ManThing
ManThing - 5/5/2009, 9:51 PM
to SHHH: What they keep calling the "Japan Story" is from a four issue limited Series by Frank Miller in the '80's simply called "Wolverine".

It's a hell of a great read. It redefined Wolverine, and ushered in the long era of Wolverine's popularity.

It's collected in a good cheap full color trade paperback.
MetalHead
MetalHead - 5/5/2009, 9:55 PM
Macksimus,
Yeah, I agree about the Apocalypse stuff. The reason I'd prefer that they write it as a trilogy is that way the story would have more continuity and they could also build up some stuff over the course of a couple movies, which is something that they hadn't done in any of the other 3-- basically every story in the previous 3 films started and ended in the same movie. This way they could introduce Genosha and the Sentinels in "X4" and not even go into the battles with the Sentinels and the freeing of the mutant slaves of Genosha until "X5." And all 3 films would climax with the final battle of the X-Men, Magneto & Cable against Apocalypse and his Horsemen.
BLACKWINGS17
BLACKWINGS17 - 5/5/2009, 9:57 PM
Japan and Madripoor sound good . . . . . but lets face it, Silver Samurai and Lord Shingen are boring as hell. I don't really feel like watching "The Last Samurai" starring Wolverine. Its a good story, but the villians are much to be desired. We need much more bad-ass villians like Cyber, and since we are in the East, Omega Red should definitely take a piece of the pie.

Sword - or - Adamantium laced skin with poison tipped claws and carbonadium coils with death spores. What do you think?
MidKnight35
MidKnight35 - 5/5/2009, 10:04 PM
Omega Red will be powered down for an on screen adaption. Probably just his tentacles, and durability. It would not be "the last samurai" trust me. Wolvie hacking through hoardes of the Hand's ninjas, only to be rewarded with a battle with Silver Samurai. Since this will probably take place late 70s ealry 80s, high end of the cold war it would be perfect to include Omega Red as the KGB's super soldier sent to make sure the U.S. does not get their hands back on Weapon X.

YES, Now I have faith in the director. Omega Red, and Silver Samurai FTW
MetalHead
MetalHead - 5/5/2009, 10:18 PM
That is my fear exactly and I've said it all along-- this movie has the potential to come off as a cheesy version of "The Last Samurai." Blackwings, that's what I'm saying exactly. Great comics? Yes. Great for a movie? Maybe only to the hardcore fans and that's what worries me-- I'd hate for it to fail and then be the death of the franchise. But again, we're all assuming that they'd do it the way that the comics did. I'm open to them making the movie but I do have fears that it could be the last that we get to see of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
TheMyth
TheMyth - 5/5/2009, 10:27 PM
@Metalhead: Thanks for the clarity. I'm with a lot of you all on that. Move on to X4 and make it the 'Mutant Massacre' and add Gambit to the group. X5 the X-Tinction Agenda, X6 the coming of Apocalypse.

No offense though Metalhead, but I think you're alone in your feelings of a Wolverine sequel. Wolverine battling swarms of ninja's sounds like loads of fun by itself. Toss in the story involved with mutant appearances by Silver Samurai, Sunfire, and Sunpyre with an element of Omega Red similar to what someone suggested in another post. It would kick ass.

Yea, I don't really see how they can do another ORIGINS story with Wolverine here. Like the first guy said, 2 hours of samurai stuff would be boring. There has been no Genosha, no Sinister, No Apocalypse....and then there are names like Omega Red to throw in....and other x-men....Cannonball would be great, since I'm from Ky and he's representin'. I actually know some Guthrie's and have been to the town that they show in the comics. Its awesome. Anyways, side tracked. Uh...I say X4 throw in Gambit and have a little Rogue romance, bring back Jubilee, throw in Emma Frost....so many things to do hear.

Apocalypse would be the best thing that they could do in my opinion.

Oh, and Wolverine was a C+ at best. Too much inaccuracy. The Deadpool review they have up on CBM pretty much sums it all up. Just silly.

Macksimus - 5/5/2009, 11:19 PM
In the new origins movie I want to see:

Silver Samurai: who is initially a villain to Wolvi, but eventually becomes his friend in order to stop the Hand and Omega Red:

The Hand (or Hydra): the ones responsible for the revival of Omega.

Team X: In a flashback telling the back story about Omega Red.

Omega Red: Out for vengeance after seeing Wolverine in Japan.

...and maybe a pre-cyborg Lady Deathstrike...or a cyborg Lady Deathstrike...but not the one from X2; she sucked.

Reappearances: Wraith, Zero, Sabertooth, and Stryker.

Also, I might want to substitute the Hand for Hydra instead; mainly because the Hand has already been seen in Electra, and It would kind of fit because they are an eastern influenced organization. ...and Silver Samurai was a member of Hydra so that could make it work also. Also, I might want to include Viper as another prominent member of Hydra; Silver was her body guard in the comics.

Omega Red definitely needs to be the main villain in the next Wolverine flick. I haven't read his Samurai stuff. I am gonna pick that up right quick and then throw in my 2 cents.
