X-men Origins: Wolverine Review

X-men Origins: Wolverine Review

A brilliant origins movie...

Review Opinion
By CBMcontributor - May 01, 2009 10:05 PM EST

This movie serves it's main purpose. It shows background on how Wolverine is a mutant, that becomes a military experiment. This movie may not have had the best effects or visual presentation, but the story is what it was all about. We all knew(at least us comic book people) where this story would end.

The interesting part about this whole movie was the many introduction to characters that are key to the story, but not exactly main stream. No matter how you put it Deadpool and Gambit are not main stream. Yet, these two characters played such an important role in this movie that we can begin the rumors of which will get a spin off. It is obvious that a Gambit movie will further the X-Men story line and probably introduce such characters as Storm and possibly Jean Gray. But Deadpool can introduce the darker side of characters. The scenarios here are truly endless. These two characters have opened the door to the time that occurs between X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the first of the X-Men trilogy.

I look forward to see what can come of this. I am not a disappointed person when it comes to this story because, once again we all knew how this would end.

According to that one "spoiler" a Gambit origin story could give us Sinister. That would be badass.

I agree, I think most people that really didnt understand this movie was those who never read much on his origin story and because of that really didnt get a lot of the little hints the movie dropped that linked it to the comics.

Bottom line, it was a great origins movie but I honestly think we need a sequel, this really just kinda felt like X-men Origins: Wolverine Part 1.

As for Roger Ebert saying that Wolverine is a bad superhero, thats his opinion. Although in my opinion the man doesnt know squat of what he talks about. If he wants to critque the movie thats fine, but Mr. Ebert dont make comments about a character you know nothing about. Read the comics...or atleast go out and buy Wolverine Essential vol 1 and read it. Then you can have an opinion upon Wolverine as a character. Going to see 4 X-men movies does not give him free reign to assume he knows even half of what Wolverine is about. Till then stick to the movies Mr. Ebert.

A Gambit movie could have ALOT. Sinister, all the Marauders, Storm, Shadow King, Bella Donna... I would love to see Gambit's first solo job for the thieves guild onscreen, where Sabertooth is sent by another client after the same item. And to see him seek out Sinister to help him control his powers, and having to gather Marauders as a favor... goosebumps.

There will be a Deadpool movie. One of the alt ending being shown with Origins is a DEAD GIVE AWAY to it.

well i paid 9 dollars to see it and my review is

*face palm*

but some people clapped at the end, some guy took like his 11 yo daughter and was sitting next to me and she seemed to enjoy it, the theater was full. so some people enjoyed it I honestly do not like there adapaation of the origins and probaly wont go see another origins movie and defintly wont go see first class if it ever happens. screw em :)

i have more wood to throw into the lame fire though.. the editing was poorly done also literaly characters appeared out of no where, gambit from the the nawlings roof, gambit from the nuclear reactor scene, wolverine when he comes back to save kayla, it looks like a completly different room from where they started.:/

and in columbus ohio we got the dead pool ending, i would have rather have seen the japan ending. anyway 2.5 out of 5 1 star for hugh 1 star for leiv? the guy that played sabretooth and .5 for the sweet scene of wolverine escaping the weapon x facility, the waterfall scene was decent also

i wouldn't expect any special effect in 2009 to be that bad. i read a comment someone posted about the movie saying "dragon ball z evolution had better special effect" and that really might be true (and sad). this movie in no way was anywhere even close to iron man. seriously, iron man flying around, shooting missiles, lasers, and fighting a huge robot twice his size, was more realistic looking than wolverine riding a motorcycle and using his claws.

as a beginning to a new X-Men movie franchise the film was brilliant, even my wife like it as she hates super-hero films.
Roll on first class (forget Magneto please)so we can get the X-men franchise back to where it belongs. back to the silver screen.

I have bought/torrented every single x-title maybe ever, and have especially followed wolverines character development over time, I thought origins was a good movie, but it was hardly a fan-movie! My rationale is this, the movie is called Origins:Wolverine, yet there is literally 2 mins of origin to the whole darn thing, it opens w/him in bed, the he kills his would-be father and runs into history w/a young victor creed, would it have kille the director to give us 10 mins of background about the howletts and creeds? or howabout some depth? howabout a scene of wolvie doing a cotta w/his sword in the rockies? stuff like that is what differentiates content from garbage! as for gambits on/off accent and thee abrupt ending, dont get me started overall it gets a 7 1/2 out of 10 for me, read on true-believers

dang! that was freakin bad! solid acting, nice CGI, killer action, and of course....nice story....oh yeah nice girl too. what ah way to bust out the intruduction for the cast. kind of graphic novel comic book feel to it. although the marvel logo is just the original one. i was kind of hoping it would be customed for...*cough*..yours truly. the love story is very dramatic. too bad he won't remember her. and yeah that's not a spoiler. it's amazing how wolverine and victor(sabertooth) had such a long relationship as brothers and didn't even remember a little bit of something in the x-men movie.

For those of you that haven't seen it yet...don't forget to wait after the end credits....ok spoiler up ahead, stop reading this if you dont wanna know...,ok wanna know?....the end credit clip just tricks you making you think it's interesting...but not really.. so yeah you don't have to be all that anticipated to watch it and you don't have to wait for about 5 to 7mins til the end clip. and last...dont forget check out the end credits for the list of other mutants that were in the movie.

Hulk vs Wolverine had a better origin for Wolverine and that wasn't even the thing's main focus. I mean honestly, adamantium bullets? So does he go walking around through the rest of the X-men movies with two adamantium-less spots in his skull?

I mean, there were so many better ways they could've handled his memory loss.

I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE HIM IN THE MIND WIE GEAR, YOU KNOW THE REMOTE CONTROL APPLIANCES THAT THEY USED TO TRY TO CONTROL HIM? THAT LOOK WAS A LANDMARK IN THE WOLVERINE LORE, AFTER THEY TRIED TO BRAINWASH HIM HE BROKE THE HOLD THEN ESCAPED, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN COOL TO SEE.OR THE BALD PROFFESSOR SCIENTIST THAT HEADED THE EXPERIMENTS...

Zenanon, I agree. Personally I would have loved to see more of Team Weapon X in action, and see the Adamantium Wolverine pushed back until the very end, with the procedure causing memory loss as I always assumed was the cause.
FattSmelliott
FattSmelliott - 5/2/2009, 10:27 AM
I'm sure that I read somewhere that the reason he lost his memory was because of his healing factor. What he went through with the Weapon X programme was so traumatic that to save him from reliving it his healing factor "healed it" in the same way that it would a wound. Not sure how that would have worked in the movie, but I certainly think it is more poetic and certainly better than the bullet thing!!!

ManThing
ManThing - 5/2/2009, 11:58 AM
It was absolute trash. Worse than Elektra.

There were just way way too many dumb things in this movie to cover it all so lets just do some obvious ones. (spoilers)

Adamantium is supposed to be unbreakable, and totally inert on a molecular level and yet Cyclops optic blasts made it get red hot.

Cyclops' optic blasts are supposed to be pure force, not heat. Singer got it right, Gavin Hood did not.

Wolverine actually blocked the beam with his claws, which is damn stupid when anything else gets hit with that beam it's blown away.
Somehow his claws just cancelled out physics and everything I guess.

So they faked Silver Fox's death huh? Ummm how did Wolverine not know that? You can't "cheat" Wolverine's senses. He would detect the deception instantly. Weak plot device.

When did Gambit get the power of being able to make small earth quakes with his stick? Neat o

The movie version of the Blob was super lame. In the comics he is actually pretty bad ass.

Wouldn't Wolverine's healing power fix his brain, and restore his memories? In the comics whenever Wolverine puts his claws thru Sabertooth's brain (two or three times), it takes him a while but he recovers everything, memories included.

How did injecting hot metal into Wolverine's body make it stick strictly to the bones? Wouldn't it burn though to other areas? Of course it would.. And how did knotty unsharp bone claws become keenly honed swordlike blades? When did that happen?

Couldn't they have found some way to explain that stuff? Maybe they knew it was a dumb movie so why bother.

It's really interesting that between the events of Wolverine and those of X men 1 Sabertooth's hair turned blonde, his eyes turned colors and his claws and teeth got longer. Amazing.

Soooooo.. Deadpool had bone - swords in his forearms all his life and didn't know it? And how did DP's severed head say shhhhhh with out any lungs to expel the air?

What exactly was it that made Wolverine quit the mutant merc squad that particular night? Your telling me that was the FIRST time that bunch killed innocent people? Not likely. Or did Logan just suddenly realize that he gave a damn? The didn't elaboratE but all that was way too rushed and didn't make much sense.

Call me a fanboy if you want, I don't care. I did grow up reading Marvel which is why it bothers me when they make crap movies with stuff I used to like.
So what i am getting at is that it's not simply different from the comic. It's also not as good. It makes less sense, it's not a s good a story, and it's a shame because the real story is a really good one.

I don't mind them making changes if they are good ones or necessary somehow. But over and beyond that it was just bad. Bad story, bad dialogue, mountains of cliche's. Does that make me a hater? It actually makes me a LOVER of GOOD movies.

As stated by the latest issue of MAD:

"....staying faithful and true to the character of Wolverine means staying true to the original X-Men runs (both Astonishing and Uncanny) as well as the 1982 mini series arc, 1984's Kitty Pryde and Wolverine both the 1990's Wolverine title and the Woverine Origins spinoff, Weapon X Volume 1, Weapon X Volume 2, the Fatal Attractions crossover saga, the House of M event series, and the more recent triad of New Avengers, X Force and Woverine: First Class. But as long as the movie sticks closely to the plots of those 900 comic books, I won't complain."

SHUT THE FRIG UP ABOUT THE AUTHENTICITY OF THIS MOVIE! EVERY WEEK SOME JAG OFF IS WRITING SOME SPIN OFF OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE THAT HITS COMIC BOOK SHELVES. OVER AND OVER, SOME NEW TAKE ON IT. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER SPIN. IT'S A LIVE ACTION COMIC BOOK YOU FRICKS!

@Juggernaut- thaaaaank you! The complete lack of wolverines senses is what really killed it for me. How did sabertooth get so close to drop a hyena's head just 20 yards from Logan? I just watched the Incredible Hulk again last night and that is how you change a character visually and still get it right(abomination). That movie rocked , they nailed the hulks look and power. There is a glaring difference with Fox and mARVEL movies. The Incredible hulk was a far better movie. Every point Jugg's made was true and can not be over looked and once again if you are going to destroy these characters and there abilities then why the hell would you go and make sure Emma Frost does not even have her physical attributes as well? why?

And how did DP's severed head say shhhhhh with out any lungs to expel the air?

I'm like 99% sure that in the Wolverine: Origins Comic book when Deadpool's head is cut off he and Wolverine talk.

I could sit down and look up what issue but I dont think its really important enough for that. You are right about a few points, but some you are not. There are actually at some points in the comics yes Cyclops' blasts are explained to be force and other times they do indeed produce heat. It really depends on what era and dev team your talking about.

All to often people have this skewed idea that marvel made a perfect world full of logic and free of inconsistancies and they really didnt. I can point out various flaws and incosistancies in the world. For example look at Wolverines claws from the 70s and then look at his claws in the 90s COMPLETELY differnt.

To be honest dude if you want a realistic movie full of logic I think you need to throw comic books and their movies to the trash. For me Ijust enjoy the movie for what it is and dont nit pick because its not done 100% the way I remember Wolverine to be because different people have different spins on the content. (ex: Ultimates Wolverine is completely different from Uncanny X-men Wolverine) Nuff said.

WOLVERINE = was rushed and too short! End of the day, it was a good action film but as X-MEN movie it kinda sucked lol! Its gonna make Box Office coz most ppl that are gonna watch it dont really know Wolverine, just like him! Like i said i wasn't expecting WATCHMEN, so i wasn't that surprised though i was about DEADPOOL, very lame, lamer than i thought it was gonna be!!! The fact PROF X popped outta no where is for the sad fact for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS boy i hope im wrong coz it will suck more than this if they use that lot instead of a proper FIRST CLASS of the originals = BEAST ANGEL ICEMAN JEAN an CYCLOPS! ; )

I believe that the X men franchise is dying and the Avengers one is just beginging, marvel should buy back all the rights they sold to Fox, or maybe Fox should hire script writers/directors that know how to make a good film.

TDK and Ironman have set the boundaries and Wolverine did not live up to the hype!

ok, this movie is not brilliant at all, it is a complete burlesque of wolverine's back story, everyone(at least us comic book readers) should know that. they completely ruined deadpool apart from his one cool scene pre-ix... its like the writers reaction after finish was "what? theres already a character named dead pool? last time i forget to look up a name before making a new character..."
and gambit has a crap role, played by a crap actor. he kind of fights wolverine in one scene, flies him in another, and the kind of saves him from falling rubble (which, since wolverine can heal, is the equivalent of picking up a pen off the floor). i hope that they end x-men before they ruin anything further, which would be difficult, but i'm sure they could find a way. they only spin off i could see being decent is deadpool, and it would have to be a prequel...

I love the comics, but I also understand that this movie isnt going to follow the comics to a T. That being said, I enjoyed it very much.

You guys need to stop comparing every little thing to the comics and enjoy it for what it is.

Somebody asked how Deadpool was able to grow blades from his knuckles; if you payed attention to the movie (you obviously didn't), you would have heard about how he was modified with the different genes from different mutants. I'm guessing he gets those swords from the genes of Wolverine...just a guess.

IMO the best X-men movie so far. I can't wait for a sequel; maybe we'll see Silver Samurai and Omega Red.

Definitely agree here. It served its purpose of telling logan's story to the rest of the world. This movie wasn't made for comic book buffs, it was made for simple entertainment, and if anyone can just get away from "it doesn't follow everything!" than maybe they could have enjoyed the movie.

The setup for the characters of Deadpool and Gambit are awesome, too. Hated that whole Wade to Weapon XI thing, but I can live with that if the merc with the mouth comes back with his suit, his name, and a sick spinoff. Marvel should definitely use their production company that made the second Punisher for Deadpool, because they sort of have the same feel.

i'm not too familiar with his origins so i wouldn't know much. the story was definitely rushed, every 2 mins a completely different scene was on, the effects like wolverine vs the helicopter wasn't great, and the fact that the other mutants had like 5 mins each sucked, but it is wolverines movie. BUT bringing in more known mutants was sweet, i liked gambit throwin the cards at wolverine, there was a lot of action, lots of fighting, esp with wolverine, sabertooth n deadpool, it was awesome. and overall, i personally thought it wasnt bad, it was good. 4 out of 5 rating.

I think that the movie was great considering some of the choices that the writers made.

As with most film adaptations... The book is usually better. I think that a lot of you are being a little unfair with your reviews.

-Jackman was awesome as expected.

-Liev did a great job as Victor Creed.

-Reynolds did a great job as Wade Wilson considering what they did to the character (what were they thinking? A single tear rolls down my cheek.)

-Will.I.Am. (whoever the hell that is) was a good John Wraith.

-Everybody wanted to see Gambit in the X-Films and you all finally got him on screen and yet you bitch about him... but really, Taylor Kitsch (whoever the hell that is) was a decent Gambit.

-Silverfox could've been done differently but her character in the movie worked just fine.

-Even Cyclops being in the movie made a little sense.

-And somehow they even made the Blob (horrible character) somewhat important.

As far as the other characters such as Emma Frost (I like boobs... but who cares how big her breasts were) just be glad she was in the movie. You all always want "Easter Eggs" and more characters to appear in these films (even going so far as to find them even if they don't exist... i.e. Captain America in the ice in the Hulk movie) Then once they do put these characters in you just pick them apart.

Lighten up... If you want to know Wolverine's origin read a f*cking comic book. If you want the cliff notes of his origin and some other cool sh*t go see the movie.

If any of you are on the fence about seeing this movie... GO SEE IT! If nothing else you'll be entertained. Don't listen to all of the people on here who are trying to "out-fanboy" each other.

I especially love the people who post who have obviously never read a Wolverine comic.

@frankiepoo5 - Got it right. Wolverine has a ton of origin stories. I've been collecting comics for over 25 years now... and until about 7 years ago James Howlett wasn't even Wolverine's name. So if you think about it... A lot of you are disregarding about 27 years of Wolverine's history and back story and basing the majority of your complaints on the film NOT limiting itself to the WOLVERINE ORIGIN comic.

Just be glad that they didn't make Hugh Jackman wear Wolverine's original costume. (It had whiskers... YIKES!)

As for those of you who saw the movie and wrote honest reviews... kudos.
