X-MEN Star Shawn Ashmore Open To Returning As Iceman In The MCU If Marvel Studios Asks

After Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back a lot of familiar faces from the past, X-Men star Shawn Ashmore is the latest actor to reveal whether he'd reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

Shawn Ashmore first played Bobby Drake/Iceman in X-Men, and later reprised the role in the next two instalments. His relationship with Rogue ended up being a key part of the trilogy, and the actor was later given the opportunity to take one last shot at playing the mutant hero in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past.

By that point, he'd been playing Iceman on and off for a decade and a half, but could he reprise the role now Marvel Studios has seemingly begun to use the Multiverse to bring back familiar faces from the past? During an interview with Screen Rant, Ashmore admitted that he would be interested.

"Yeah, I haven't seen the newest Spider-Man movie, but I know that - I'm trying not to get spoiled - but I know that everybody from everywhere comes. So look, after Days of Future Past, I had kind of accepted that was gonna be our last film, with this group of actors, anyway," he explained. "Disney was taking over the rights. It felt like the end for our characters, the original trilogy cast, it felt kind of like the end of the story. And I've kind of accepted that."

"But obviously, anything's possible, and I have no idea what they're going to do. Are they going to cast completely new actors and start fresh? Are they going to pull actors from the Fox X-Men trilogy into the Marvel Universe? I don't know. If it happened, would I do it? 100%. No question. I grew up playing that character. I'm a comic book fan. It's things that I'm into. So, I would do it again in a second."

Ashmore later added that he's "accepted the fact that I got four movies, and that might be it," acknowledging that he's "pretty happy with that."

Marvel Studios is faced with a significant challenge with the reintroduction of the X-Men moving forward. Do they remind fans of a series of movies that steadily decreased in quality by bringing some of the same actors back for cameos or just start fresh, ignoring the franchise's history? There might be a happy medium there somewhere, but it's going to mean treading a fine line.

Which actor's from the previous X-Men movies do you want to see in the MCU?

@UXASIS - You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

@cyclopsprime - With the exact opposite power set.

I am wondering to what extent they're gonna bring back previous versions. With the rumors of strange 2 as well as no way home, anything is possible. Plus this is proving to be crazy popular, and they'd probably want to rectify the bohner situation at least.

@Origame - I think there's a very good chance Feige will just re-use the First Class actors with the character's being slightly rebooted (variants) like we saw in No Way Home with the Spider-Men and the villains.

As you said No Way Home has shown that using actors from previous franchises to be successful.

It also quicker for Feige to immediately do certain crossover stories this way. For example Avengers vs X-MEN or Secret Wars.

I want a comic accurate Bobby for the reboot. Not that Ashmore did a bad job, but his Iceman had little to do with his comicbook counterpart. Not his fault, I know. And if there is going to be some type of Secret Wars event in the future, why not? Bring back as many "variants" as they can.

However, for Marvel Studios fresh start we need younger actors. And an Iceman who looks a little childish with his constant jokes but has a great power. Give me my Bobby Drake! It's also a great oportunity to bring some LGTBI representation to the MCU without changing what is established in the comics.

@Turogalh - didn't he "become" straight again in the comics?
Origame

@Turogalh - ...but him being LGBT in the comics changed what was established in the comics. He spent decades in the comics as a massive ladies man, and they didn't even try to go for him being bi, they just made him full on gay. It was such a massive heel turn for the character that it's a popular fan theory he's only now gay because Jean messed with his brain to make him believe he's gay.

@Urubrodi - not really. Essentially what happened is he lost the memory from when he came out. So I guess you can pretend he's back to being straight but technically within Canon he's just in the closet.

I really like the original trilogy cast, but I kinda want to see new actors in the roles. Maybe as a multiverse cameo I could see it happen though, even if they already did the multiple timelines coming together in DofP

Well, what if Marvel is waiting for Shawn to ask them? Jiminy! If these actors want a role, maybe they should put some effort into it and ask for it and then audition for it.

I like the guy, but no need to come back to this character. We need someone new. Ice Man is a favorite of mine and he needs some proper treatment.

If there's an Exiles-type team with characters from the multiverse, then I'm okay with this (as I would be with Marsden's Cyclops or Chung's Blink). Hell, I'd love to see Elliot Page playing an alternate future Shadowcat - Kit Pryde. He was underserved, well-cast, and totally honors the spirit of the kinds of alternate future Kitty Prydes envisioned by Claremont.

Fox movies mostly failed to capture the spirit of these characters, but that doesn't mean the actors were bad, or that they were bad in their roles. (As with No Way Home), my only concern is when the MCU is reluctant to have their own adaptations because Feige privileges these "variants". That's a Feige problem and honestly a debate worth having, because it hamstrings the MCU.

But any individual performer returning as a multiversal variant is fair game to me. Case by case, depending on the project.

Iceman wasted and abandoned like Loki.

His only feat was cooling wolverines beer.
