X-MEN '97 Action Figures Highlight A Heroic Magneto And A Couple Of Surprising Villains - Possible SPOILERS

Hasbro has revealed another wave of Marvel Legends action figures based on X-Men '97, and along with the new-look Magneto, we see a couple of formidable villains who will serve Mister Sinister in the show!

X-Men: The Animated Series arrived on our screens way back in 1992 and ran for a total of 76 episodes. The show was a hit and delivered a near-perfect take on the mutant team that still resonates with comic book fans today.

We're not exactly shocked that Marvel Studios is revisiting this animated reality in the upcoming Disney+ series X-Men '97, with the majority of the original cast back to pick up where the classic series left off.

As we first reported on Toonado.com, Hasbro has shared a new wave of Marvel Legends action figures which offer our best look yet at Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, the heroic Magneto (who will step up to lead the X-Men in Professor X's absence), and the evil Goblin Queen and The X-Cutioner.

Each figure was also accompanied by a brief character description offering additional details about each of them:

Cyclops - The consistent and determined leader of the X-Men, Cyclops has the mutant ability to emit powerful red beams of energy from his eyes.

Jean Grey - Jean Grey is a powerful telepath and telekinetic mutant who has faced cosmic entities and world-shattering events in stride. Endlessly empathetic, she serves as the heart of the X-Men.

Nightcrawler - Despite his good heart and gentle nature, swashbuckling teleporter Nightcrawler is often demonized for his physical mutations, including his indigo fur and a prehensile tail.

Magneto - With Professor Charles Xavier gone, Magneto — the self-proclaimed Master of Magnetism — reinvents himself as he tries to carry forward his oldest friend’s dream.

Goblin Queen - A Jean Grey doppelgänger who shakes the X-Men to their core, Goblin Queen becomes a fierce enemy of the X-Men after her mind is corrupted by Mister Sinister.

The X-Cutioner - A mercenary and weapons specialist with high-tech, homemade tactical gear, Carl Denti — A.K.A. The X-Cutioner – is determined to make mutants pay for their perceived wrongdoings toward humankind.

The X-Men will eventually be rebooted for live-action, of course, and X-Men '97 seems like a great way to familiarise many fans with the team before they join the MCU. After all, Fox's movies are quickly becoming a distant memory and, outside of a few exceptions, are best off forgotten.

You can take a closer look at this new wave of X-Men '97 figures, including the heroic Magneto and Mister Sinister's villainous allies, in the Instagram posts below.

Cool! Even though they're calling it X-Men '97, a lot of these designs and storylines are more like X-Men '88, which is bang up my alley. Can't wait! (though I guess I should finally get around to watching that shitty, shitty Fox cartoon (did I mention that I think it's shitty?)

@ClintThaHamster - X-Cutioner's Song, Inferno and that whole period Magneto was in charge. Love it. Right up my alley too.

I see a baby in that Madelyne Pryor figure. That's gotta be a little baby X-Man or Cable.

We really need Feige to just adapt the XMen and potentially Giant Size X Men. Don't add any nonsense that wasn't already in those comics. Stick closely to the source material and hire a writer who loves the XMen and crack a real story. Don't botch this. It might single handedly save your cinematic universe.

@McMurdo - I think an adaptation of Giant Sized X-Men could work for introducing the lion's share of X-Men characters. You focus on the new team (Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Banshee and Thunderbird) sent into Krakoa to rescue the old team (Jean, Angel, Iceman, Havok and Polaris).

Basically like the first Ant-Man movie where they adapted Marvel Premiere #s 47-48 as a way to have both Ant-Men and tell a legacy story. Except once the old X-Men team are rescued you end up with a giant-sized team, but you oonly really have to focus on the new characters for the majority of the movie.

I'm really excited for this show. Wish we had an official release date.

Not that excited for X-Cutioner, but definitely excited for Goblin Queen, especially since we see that she has little baby Nathan with her.

I wonder if we will get an adaptation of Inferno.

@mountainman - It'll be interesting to see if this new cartoon has the actual balls to adapt stories in the way the old one was famous for doing.

Cartoons just stopped doing that at some point and I don't know why. The last cartoon IA remember to just straight up adapt the comics was the 2003 TMNT cartoon.

@ObserverIO - I thought that Avengers EMH did a good job adapting the source material.

@mountainman - 💯 🎯

I'm still pissed that MARVEL chose to clip it, only to insert SuperHeroSquad 🦬💩!!!

@KennKathleen - They didn't cancel Avengers EMH for Super Hero Squad. They replaced it with a different Avengers cartoon that was no where near as good.

@mountainman - I always liked X-Cutioner. Don't know why, but I thought he was cool as a kid.

Also, notice his belt buckle has FoH on it? I guess they'll be making him an assassing for the Friends of Humanity in this show.

Magneto, Goblin Queen and Nightcrawler are the best ones.

I would love to see Cassandra Nova in this season or next season. The destruction of Genosha could be a great season finale.

It could be a chapter in mutant history that changes everything.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 12/14/2023, 7:37 PM
@Repian - I agree that would be cool, but they would need to build toward it. The last time we saw Genosha in this series it was the old-school mutant hating country.

They would need to re-establish it as mutant utopia before having Nova send that giant cockroach Sentinel to destroy it.

As a child of the 90's, seeing this packaging unlocks a core memory. That and Johnny's Toys when Power Rangers first came out lol

Also, notice the FoH belt buckle on X-Cutioner. Looks like the Friends of Humanity will be sending him after the X-Men as an assassin.

Ya know, I don’t normally buy Hasbro’s Marvel figs at full price (usually just wait for Target to mark them down), but the teenager in me is telling me to buy them on-sight. Oh, and he’s also telling me some other things about alcohol, drugs, and girls, but definitely going to ignore those things as my company doesn’t allow PTO for serving jail time 😉.
