Cobie Smulders Talks Different Character Dynamics In JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK
We have a cool new still from Jack Reacher: Never Go Back! Plus, Cobie Smulders chats about the dynamic between her character and Cruise's Reacher as well as an unexpected wild card. Come take a look!
Cobie Smulders is Tom Cruise's latest leading lady in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and considering the past two are Emily Blunt (Edge Of Tomorrow) & Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation), she'll have some pretty big shoes to fill, but luckily for her, she already has plenty of experience in the badass department, thanks to her role as Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, as part of their annual Fall Movie Preview, Smulders expressed her excitement at finally getting a chance to get in on the action versus being relegated to handling things behind-the-scenes: "I’m not competing fight-wise with superheroes." She jokes before adding: "It is so exciting to see these superheroes fight one another. The [human characters] are, like, ‘I’m just gonna make some phone calls.’ So it was really fun to be in a movie where you had to fight for your life at every opportunity. No weapons, no superpowered gear, no SHIELD agency beyond you. You’re on the run.” Being on the run is pretty much a prerequisite for any Cruise-led feature, so it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that they'll spend a good chunk of the Ed Zwick-directed film evading capture.
Smulders went on to share details on her character, Major Susan Turner, an old friend of Jack Reacher's, who has built quite an impressive resume for herself over the years. When we first meet her, she'll have taken up Reacher's old position as the head of an internal military police and her relationship with Reacher is friendly, but mostly professional, although there may be something brewing on the horizon: "These are two people who don’t have much time to date. They started a relationship just by being friendly and helping each other out, and that blossomed into more. Reacher decides to seek out Turner, and maybe ask her out." However, as the old saying goes, the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry and when Reacher and Turner finally link up, as expected, everything goes to hell: "It’s an interesting dynamic between these two characters, who are so used to being alone and being in charge. Now they have to work together. Initially, that goes horribly wrong, and they have to reconfigure themselves.”
As they work out one conspiracy, another major complication presents itself when a teenaged girl, played by Danika Yarosh (Heroes Reborn), enters the picture claiming to be Reacher’s daughter: “She becomes a big part of the story, so now we’re in this weird family dynamic. My character did not ask to be saddled with this type of responsibility, and so there’s a constant clashing of ideas. At the same time, they’re all being hunted, all being chased." Well, it certainly sounds like Reacher's going to have his hands full this October. Check out the latest promotional still from the movie above featuring Cruise, Smulders, and Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton).
