Amazon In Talks To Buy MGM, Giving The Streamer Access To The Entire JAMES BOND Franchise

Amazon was among the streaming services that refused to pay for No Time to Die's streaming rights, but they're now bringing out the big bucks for a potential acquisition of MGM and its entire slate...

Variety reports that Amazon is a week into negotiations on a deal to acquire MGM for $9 billion. There have been rumblings about the studio being up for sale for a while now, with various price tags floating around online. Ultimately, MGM could sell for anywhere between $5 billion and $10 billion, so it all depends on how the negotiations continue to play out.

Amazon currently has over 200 million Prime members worldwide, and Jeff Bezos recently revealed that around 175 million of them have streamed content over the past year.

With different studios and networks locking down their content on streaming services of their own, acquiring a brand like MGM would be huge for Amazon. James Bond is the obvious big win, but there are 4000 movie titles in total, with The Hobbit, Rocky, and RoboCop franchises among the highlights. Viewers can obviously enjoy those classics, while Amazon can expand on them with new movies and small screen spinoffs that keep people coming back on a weekly basis.

MGM also has over 17,000 TV episodes, including Stargate, Fargo, Vikings, and The Handmaid's Tale

Needless to say, this could be a game-changer for Hollywood, and a major win for Amazon. Whether it pans out obviously remains to be seen, but 007 fans will no doubt be excited at the prospect of getting to see more of James Bond (the character's franchise has tonnes of small screen potential).

We'll keep you updated on this one as we learn more.

That would be a pretty good move. Rather see a streaming service acquire a movie study, than another telecom provider buying it. Because in the case of the latter, that probably would've meant another streaming service

@bkmeijer - That and I somehow think that would be better for future films. Or could you imagine a Bond tv series, actual Bond of course? Then there's the possibility of endless spinoffs too, that I'm not too sure I'd be enthused about though.

@The1st - a Bond tv series would actually be pretty cool. Enough short Bond stories that haven't been adapted yet

@bkmeijer @The1st - I dunno its going to make Bond look cheap if they aren't dropping 200+ mil on each movie. Bond shouldn't even be a show because it will dilute its "class". Bond is supposed to have the most expensive and best looking prodcuts to represent rich masculinity.

How will amazon pay to drop a real airplane and have it slide down a snowy mountain like Spectre? They won't because they will never make that money back on streaming and Bond will look like crap if its cheap.

@mastakilla39 - maybe they will drop loads of money assuming they will make it back with new subscribers. They already paid 9 billion for the studio, so there is some willingness I would say

@mastakilla39 - Good point. I'm not interested in tv or any spinoffs either then. No MI-5 or Dawn of Q, etc.

Had to check up but apparently the Hobbit really had MGM as a production company. Goes to show how little WB tends to invest in their biggest movies. Although I'm not sure if the Hobbit could be part of the deal if New Line also footed a part of the bill?

Either way an interesting developement, I figured MGM would get acquired sooner than later but my mind was at Netflix for some reason 🤔
Good for both parties, MGM has been struggling while Amazon desperately needs original content.

Off topic... did I miss a story here about the big announcement yesterday about AT&T splitting off Warner Entertainment (along with HBO Max, CNN and so on) for a merger with Discovery into a new company that would try to rival Netflix, Disney+, etc?

@Chewtoy - didn't get posted here, you're right. There's a fair bit of interesting news that got ignored by the writers (significant CBM adjacent actors being cast in Knives Out 2,James Gunn scolding the Snyder fanbase, At&T merger).
Maybe these articles wouldn't bring as much click as the newest Snyder news or top 10 list, what do we know

@Chewtoy - A certain “author” on this site posted up a bloated ~Not supporting Zack Snyder~ caused Warner Media to fail (or something like that, it was kind of incoherent) article yesterday…It mysteriously got pulled once the comment section started ripping it apart…

@Blergh -
What did Gunn say?
Blergh
Blergh - 5/18/2021, 9:59 AM
@Battabing - they attacked him for making a movie in the Dceu because doing that supported WB in not supporting Snyder.
He then said that they can't have it both ways and force one artist being respected while another gets disrespect.

Probably didn't get posted because it didn't support our writers biases

Good move. MGM has been actively looking for a white knight for some time now. I would have bet on Apple ro buy it, though. Apple is setting on a b... load of cash and is trying to get into streaming/TV (#AppleTV+) but is Lackierung contest.

I prefer Amazon as new owner. They need more exklusive content, too, to keep up with D+ and Netflix.

Paramount could have been an Option as well. P+ is steaming up but I don't think they can catch up alone either. Maybe they could setup a joint vemture with other smaller studios like Universal, Sony, Constantin etc. or be the next bif M&A theirselfs

For someone like me who is looking for a Stargate revival, I am all for this idea.

I am curious to know if this will help MGM joining Movies Anywhere. I am all for a deal that helps get the three big hold outs (Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate) into the fold.

Smart move. MGM isn't the major player that they used to be and the pandemic was pushing them to the brink of another bankruptcy. Hopefully this can be a major win for everyone.

This would mean a new Stargate would happen and I'm alright with that.

Stargate:SG1 was a phenomenal show and I have to imagine Amazon could bring out a great series.

They did well with the Expanse, so seeing as that series is ending now is the time for a Stargate revival.

Plus with Amazon now making video games, I can a Stargate video game being successful too.

Just take the idea of No Man's Sky or Tencent's new game Our Planet as an idea for exploration and you have the perfect Stargate game.
