Roland Emmerich, director of several blockbuster movies such as "Independence Day", "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012", has received an offer to helm Universal Pictures' adaptation of the famous Atari videogame "Asteroids", produced by Lorenzo DiBonaventura.

In the script, written by Matthew Lopez ("Race to Witch Mountain"), following Earth's environmental devastation in the future, the human race has colonized and spread through the Universe. In this scenario, two brothers must protect the citizens of a colony from incoming asteroids, relying only with an old spaceship.

Emmerich is yet to accept or decline the offer, but there are good chances that he might do it. "Asteroids" is expected to be released in 2013.
