SHOULD WE BOYCOTT FOX & SONY CBMs?

Fox and Sony continue to produce Comic Book Movies that ignore the source material and disregard the long standing core audience of these properties. Why then should we continue to pay to see them?

In recent weeks I have heard more and more people say things like "I will not pay to see any X-Men movies until the rights revert back to Marvel," or "Fox doesn't care about the fans only the payday." and "Frick the(Spider-Man) reboot." Most, if not all of these comments seem to be warranted. In recent years Fox and Sony have butchered many of our beloved Marvel characters along with their long standing plot lines and continuity. Some necessary, some not. They have no love for the characters that many of us have followed since we were children. Just look at what they did with Venom's character in "Spider-Man 3." It was absurd! Eddie Brock was a tiny, whining little tit-bag. Venom himself had very little screen time and was barely recognizable as one of Spidey's greatest villains. Then there is the likes of" X-Men: The Last Stand." After the movie my kids asked me what I thought. I responded "I think they killed the franchise!" I thought the movie was a huge insult to comic book fans. Well it didn't kill the franchise. Instead we got "X-Men Origins:Wolverine." Another Fox crap-fest. There were so many characters messed up in that movie that I'm not even going to get started on that rant.

Now it would appear that they are preparing to perpetrate an even more heinous act with a prequel, reboot, or whatever they are calling "X-Men:First Class." So far I am not impressed. They are adding characters not even in the original material. Hiring actors, firing actors, and then offering them the role again? They don't know what the hell they want to do! It seems that they are in such a desperate rush to put out what will most likely be an ill conceived, poorly executed, substandard product on levels "Jonah Hex" wasn't able to achieve. They aren't even concerned with the pre-existing fan base. They are more focused on pulling in the "tween" market with the likes of the Twilight series. This is a slap in the face of long term, diehard fans who have supported these characters for decades.

So should we, as diehard fans, BOYCOTT and even campaign against these substandard offerings from FOX and SONY? Should you raise your voice in protest to how our beloved characters are being mishandled? I do think these properties need to be back to MARVEL where they belong!

If you agree hit the "Thumbs Up" and spread the word.

I don't think so. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two Spider-Man and X-Men movies, and I also think Daredevil deserves better than what most people give it.

They've given us some good movies, however they've also given us a lot of stinkers.

I think people need to give up on Marvel buying back the rights to those properties. it isn't going to happen. Marvel has even said they have no plans whatsoever to bring them back under Marvel's roof. (don't take that the wrong way, i would KILL to see a Marvel made X-Men movie.)

Also, as much as i hate to say it, the success of CBM's greatly rely on the general, non-comic reading public. The die-hard CBM community is not big enough by itself to keep these movies coming. if our community boycotted the movies, the general public would still be going to see them, and they still make a killing.

I say, see what you want to see. you never know when you'll be pleasantly surprised.

although i will say that Fox seems to be getting worse and worse. X3, Wolverine Origins? both horrible, actually, they were both jokes. and First Class looks to be shaping up the same way.

The Raimi Spider-Man movies were excellent even though Spider-Man 3 had its problems it wasn't horrible. X Men the Last Stand was a good movie I don't know why everyone hated it I thought killing off Cyclops and Professor X was very surprising and suspenseful. I do agree with you by the fact that X Men first class and the Spider-Man reboot are going to be crap and will make the old movies look like wonderful masterpieces.

How are you going to judge X-Men: First Class already?! All they have done is cast a couple of the characters and of course they are going to be YOUNG! its the First Class, not the retirement home class. the fact is that i do agree with most of the points in your article, but to compare first class to jonah hex?! Now that is absurd. We dont really kno the direction they are going with first class but i'll give them a shot. i mean they gave us 2 great spidey films, 2 great xmen films, and an underrated daredevil film.

imo they havent done anything to disinterest me in this new film (like casting jessica alba or julian mcmahon)

Btw im really interested in seeing the new spidey reboot, i think Andrew Garfield has a certain Peter Parker look to him and Mark Webb is a great director, we'll see what happens with that.

But to put down first class and the spidey reboot down already without seeing footage. LMAO YOU GUYS DONT EVEN KNOW WHO THE REST OF THE CAST IS! Dont judge it already guys. You just seem ignorant (no offense)

Fox and Sony have been guilty for making just horrible, and unwatchable CBM's but dont quickly call the upcoming movies disgraces or that they are going to be horrible w/o having hard evidence

:P

First off...theres you know the MAINSTREAM thats the primary goal of film makers in terms of CBM's...they tend to show faith in the title by trying to please us fans in small ways. Second...you can't blame a product before seeing it. Third...studios always make good or bad decisions...we have no sway over that.

I think "boycotting" a film is just a silly idea, thats like boycotting Twilight for being a crappy film...people are gonna see it...its gonna make lots of money...its gonna annoy us but we get over it and find something new to look for.

@Ironbat...we do but hows them going back gonna make them good or better...it would be under its rightful flag but simply saying it going back to Disney means they will own the rights but may save it for later.

why can't everyone here be optimistic...most are scared and afraid of whats gonna happen. We won't know until we see it...for now lets take everything with high regards and hope for the best product they can give us

@Antonio: YES!!!

@Romac: I almost shed a tear reading your article. I desperately want the rights to go back to Marvel where our characters will be cared for. It's a very touchy subject though. For some of us CBM fans, telling us that X-Men, Spider-Man, and Fantastic 4 could come back to Marvel is like telling a boy that his dog might come back from the dead. The boy has already dealt with the pain and tried to move on. Opening up old wounds just makes him feel sad so the boy gets defensive and tells you why it's impossible.
On that note:
I'm telling you right now, that you won't see me at any non-Marvel-Marvel-movies in theaters ever (unless maybe some Fox/Sony Marvel movie gets Dark Knight reviews or better). You can count me in on the boycott.

Wow Good Stuff from everyone! Good Times. Good Times.
Seriously though I like Spidey2 and X2, but is the general direction these studios are taking that bothers me. Their movies aren't getting better.....they are getting worse.

As far in as comparing First Class to Jonah Hex that was an intentional exaggeration. It does seem however that Fox doesn't really have a good gameplan so far.

This is what I wanted to do, bring about a good topic to debate, and I have done that. I take no offense in being called ignorant simply because I am not. I am also not the one to sling insults at my fellow CBM members. I just posed a question to everyone here. I slung my insults at the studios who have given franchises of continually decreasing quality.

I am merely anticipating their future efforts on what has come before. Which still gives me plenty of ground to stand on.

Wadey09 - 7/3/2010, 10:37 PM
as much as i would love to join a boycott of this magnitude, i agree with the fact that the CBM community is just a fraction of the audience. we can spread the word, but who else other than fellow CBMers like us would understand the impact of such an action?
and even then, there's just morbid curiosity. i can't help it. i'm probably gonna see Jonah Hex and The Last Airbender. although probably NOT in theatres.
now its Comic Con where the studios like Fox and Sony would get the message:
that we are not happy with how they have treated characters that we have supported over the years. we do not appreciate the butchering of said character and the stories they have been set upon.
but to major studios like these, its all about money. they don't care if the stories suck and the characters are butchered. all that matters to them is the amount of revenue that is brought in AFTER the film is released.
they've made precious few of these films right, but never wrote down what made them so good. why can't they understand that they need to LISTEN to the fanbase. and the directors of the films they are sponsoring.
perhaps a petition is what we need. would something like that work? and if so, how many would be willing to sign? how many signers would it take to make the world right again?

Oh I don't think we can change the way things are, and I know we need the non-fanboy crowd to be brought in for these movies to continue being made. As a fanboy myself I am going to want to see First Class, but this time around I am going to wait to hear the opinions of some of my trusted CBM colleages before I do.

I've found that non-comic book fans don't have a problem with the films.Go out and find some people who have no prior knowledge of the characters outside of the films.Ask them about X-3,FF 2, Spider-Man 3 and Wolverine.I guarantee you the majority of them will say they enjoyed the movies.

They average person doesn't really pay attention to who's making these movies. As far as they know, Marvel is making them. They have no clue that Deadpool was completely different from the comics or that Wolverine and Sabertooth probably aren't brothers. They don't know that Silverfox and Emma aren't sisters. They probably don't even know who they are, period. All they see is a fun action movie with alot of superheroes.

If you can, imagine you don't know all that you do about your favorite characters.Think about these movies and see if you would enjoy them more.

I think the studios have accomplished what they've set out to do.Make movies based on popular characters that are targeted at mainstream audiences who don't know all the changes they've made.

The only good example of this that I can think of is the first Blade movie.Other than being a black vampire hunter and using a villain from the comic, that movie was completely different from the comics. They changed Blade's personality, gave him powers, changed the setting from Europe to America and tweaked the villain. And it was actually better.I don't think anyone complained because it made the character better. Most people didn't even know the character, so they had nothing to complain about.

yes & no,we want these comic book movies.
but we don't like how they f*** up our beloved comics.
what marvel needs to do is get more involved, when the film studio goes way off course with the story & charactors for example making galactus a f***ing cloud.
what they should do with disney is have more say on what goes into the final version of the movie.

I think that yes Sony and Fox has made its fair of mistakes on behalf of true die hard CBM fans when it comes to its movies. The rights should go back to Marvel!! Spider-Man was good , but 2 and 3 in my eyes failed same with X Man 2 and 3. I think that now that Disney owns Marvel (I can't believe I still am saying that) that they need to pony up some lawyers and cash and get the rights back for all us hardcore CBM fans so that the movies can be don the right way!!!!!!!!!!!

@ wolverine1974 funny,i personally think spider-man 2 & x-men 2 are sony/fox best comic films to date & two of the best ever made up their with the dark knight, iron man,300,sin city & the watchmen.

I think when the Avengers comes out and the "general public" sees for themselves how AWESOME a big crossover movie is, it will become much easier to get the "general public" on our side. It may be a long-shot, but it's definitely possible.

@RockAwesome: I was hoping you'd show up!
GreenHalJordan
GreenHalJordan - 7/4/2010, 11:24 AM
@jusme6 agreed. Once avengers comes out it'll be a lot easier and people will want to know the origin of the characters, where to find em?, comic books which equals CB fans!

I will comment on this matter as a person who loves the comic-book genre, but rarely reads a comic.

To be quite honest, having a couple of hundreds, maybe a thousand, of people boycotting the studio's work wont drastically effect the final outcome for the movie (budget wise). Remember that, especially with Fox and Sony, the amount of merchandise that is released is incredible. Toys, school accessories, games, clothing, dvds/bluerays, underwear...

What the fans NEED are directors who are capable of standing up to the studio and say 'this is the way i'll make my movie.'

The weakness is not in the studios, I believe, but in the directors and their crew who allow themselves to be pushed around and blinded by money.

YES YES YES AND YES! if the fans do not go see these films then fox and sony will have trouble making sequels. and that would hopefully make them sell the rights back to marvel.

Hey everyone,to see the flipside of this argument checkout Aki87s article to this one. He makes many valid points and answers many questions posed here.

I concede that for the relitively tiny percentage that we fanboys make up for us to boycott these movies would barely make a dent in their profits.

The Spider-Man movies were great. Even Spider-Man 3 wasn't too bad, my only complaint about it was emo-Peter and tiny-Venom who wasn't at all like he is in the comics.

I say...keep it the way it is and see how it all pans out.

I agree 100% with what vRockAWEsome stated. I have found that the only thing I get out of Marvel related movies not produced by Marvel is a lasting feeling of disappointment and a lack of money in my wallet. Why continue to set myself up for disaster? The definition of insanity is to continue to perform the same action and expect to attain different results. I am done with these studios ruining these movies for me. So, though I may end up watching most of these movies (eventually), they won't see one dime from me. Nuff said

Oh and to Sony and Fox
