UPDATE 2: Sylvester Stallone Breaks Neck Filming The Expendables

Stallone opted for "physical stunts" over CGI and paid the price...with his neck!

Writer-director Sylvester Stallone loaded up his new movie, The Expendables with '80s and '90s action heroes and said that he wanted to make the film the way films used to be made:

"Today, technically, we're incredibly gifted and versatile with CGI, and I wanted to do a film that was more about men, doing things that we did back in the '80s and '90s that were a little more mano a mano — actual, physical stunts."

Unfortunately for Sly, real physical stunts resulted in a real physical injury. Stallone recently revealed to FHM magazine that co-star "Stone Cold" Steve Austin ended up putting the hurt on Stallone during one of the fight sequences.

"Man, it was seven guys, kicking each other's ass, one guy tougher than the next. No joke, our stunt guys were begging for mercy.

Actually, my fight with Stone Cold Steve Austin was so vicious that I ended up getting a hairline fracture in my neck. I'm not joking.

"I haven't told anyone this, but I had to have a very serious operation afterwards. I now have a metal plate in my neck."

The Expendables also stars Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture and Terry Crews, with cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.

The Expendables opens August 10, 2010!

UPDATE: Apparently, so many people doubted that Stallone's injury was real that he sent an x-ray showing the break to StalloneZone with the following note:

"For the doubters and the haters, a picture is worth a thousand words. You walk the walk, you pay a price. But, as bad as it was at least we have it on film.

Keep punchin’

Sly

P.S. To the haters, I don’t need to invent pain, there’s enough of it out there to go around.

P.S.S. The reason I was never seen in a neck brace is because I stayed home for three weeks to heal.

P.S.S.S. Van Damme may mean a great deal to some of you, but what he’s putting forth is not truthful."

UPDATE 2: More X-Ray pics!

Man Jean Claude did not want to do this because he did not want to be typecast no more...and he went and do Universal Soldier...

BTW hes movie "JCVD" was pretty good, he can actually act even know he was playing himself.

Gunsmith - the reasons between the HUGE difference between Stallone and Schwarzenegger? Well, 1. Schwarzenegger is in politics now and really doesn't have time to work out and 2. Stallone is not only pumping iron but also the HGH! Better living through modern chemistry...

@Tea: Lol!

Guys that "now" picture of Arnold is really fake. He doesn't look like that. Someone photoshoped his head onto another body. Looks funny though.

@Logan: I thought Stallone's "super-soldier-serum" might make him invulnerable to neck breaks.

True the trailer is out...
I like Stalone, he always was a Humble actor... I think he knows most of fame was from his physiq and not his incredible acting talent. For the movies he do its on point.

That last Rambo was pretty F**kin good. I was glad to see him go home in the end... It pretty much completed the saga of a lost boy. I hear he is about to make another one I just wonder what could they possible offer him to come back out and fight.

I was kind of exited for this because although Im not a big fan of brainless action movies, I did like all of these guys when I was a kid. Then I saw the trailer. Meh.

Yea, should be a good film....and poor Arnold couldn't keep his body because 80% of it was steroids and working out like 3 times a day. When you're de Govunuh of Caleeforneeuh. U have more important things to do.

tea@ indeed man, freezing my balls off :(
Dmon
Dmon - 1/8/2010, 7:48 AM
I know I might get flamed for saying this but I think Stallone would be good for old man Batman in a The Dark Knight Returns movie. With the size he was in the Rocky Balboa and the last Rambo he would be bad @$$. I know he is short but they can do something about that plus ppl get shorter when they get older.

JCVD should've been in this. I can see as an actor you don't want to get pigeonholed into the same roles. He has so much more range than these other guys

The Expendables is high on the list of movies I'm looking forward to watching. I really respect Stallone and the others for wanting to make a REAL movie, not just a live-action cartoon like most films today are. The older films were better because they relied on STORY and ACTING and real ACTION, not a bunch of fake crap drawn up on a computer. Yes, CGI is fine for some things that just can't be done with real people or things, but too many movies substitute fancy CGI for story, with the result being a bad movie.

I'm certainly glad that Stallone's injury wasn't more serious (not to say that it was minor in any way!). If anything, I respect him more for wanting to do a lot of his stunts himself. We need more real men like him in Hollywood.

Teabag: there's another one that's gotten rather fat and soft- Seagal. I saw him at Gretna Fest in October, and thought "that guy looks a lot like Seagal's fatter brother" before I knew that he was actually working as a cop here. Too bad for him. I love Seagal's early stuff, before he started getting all "green" and preachy, especially Above the Law and Hard to Kill.

Comicb00kguy - "The older films were better because they relied on STORY and ACTING and real ACTION..." Uhhh... did we see the same films? I agree with one of your statements - the 'ACTION' bit. Today's film heros wouldn't/couldn't match the flicks of yester-year, but let's face it, NONE of them will EVER be up for an Academy Award for Best Actor or Screenplay (LMFAO!)!
