UPDATE: Disney Shuts Down Production On The Lone Ranger; Fate Of Movie Uncertain!

In a truly shocking turn of events, Disney have halted production on The Lone Ranger, which was set to star Armie Hammer in the lead role, Johnny Depp as Tonto and an impressive supporting cast. Find out why here...

I don't think anyone would have seen this coming! After months of impressive casting news, it was believed that work was well underway on The Lone Ranger, but Disney have now decided to halt production on the project altogether. Deadline broke the news just a few minutes ago, and here are a few excerpts from their report. Click on the link below to read more details over on the site.

In a stunning development, Disney has shut down production on The Lone Ranger, the Gore Verbinski-directed film that was to star Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the title character. Jerry Bruckheimer is the producer. I'm told this all just happened, and Disney pulled the plug because the budget, which the filmmakers reduced from $242 million to $232 million was too expensive for the studio.

This is stunning because Bruckheimer is the long time cornerstone producer on the Disney lot and because Depp has starred in the studio's all time biggest films, including Alice in Wonderland and the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Deep and Verbinski teamed for three of those pictures., grossing billions of dollars for the studio. Verbinski most recently directed Rango, the Paramount film that is a front runner for Best Animated Film Oscar.

The film was scheduled to be released December 21, 2012, smack up against The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which opens December 14, and the Brad Pitt-starrer World War Z, which was just slated for December 21. It's unclear whether that factored into the decision. The studio and filmmakers are trying to figure out the next step, which would either be to shop it elsewhere or put it back together at a later date at a lower budget. Calls to Disney were not returned.

UPDATE: Deadline have since learned the following.

Johnny Depp is in Europe right now, but really wanted to make The Lone Ranger. According to one insider, "Let's see how it all shakes out on Monday. There's always a chance that it could go. You never know until you know." Everyone involved is still intent on the project and still in discussions to see what can be done.

What do you guys think about this? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

232 million dollars is a bit expensive for a movie where people ride around on horses. Unless it's Disney Dollars I would have pulled the plug as well.

The logo looks like the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Lone Ranger had that kind of budget? What was going to happen in the film that needed that kind of budget? Now I'm sad they halted production just cause I want to know what that budget was being used for.

I think that this economy is hurting the film industry because movies have done poorly lately especially this year witht he exception of Harry Potter and Transformers.

@Warcam-that would be my guess as well. I am a little sad tho, loved the Lone Ranger books when I was a kid (and I mean the OLD OLD Lone Ranger books that were written in the way back when) I also loved the film version with Clinton Spilsbury as John Reed. Would've liked to see an updated version BUT absolutely DID NOT agree with Depp playing the roll of Tonto. There weren't any authentic Native American actors to play that part? I heard Depp was chosen bc he has a little Cherokee Indian blood in him. WTF! I believe MOST Americans probably have a "little" Native American blood running through their veins. I'm done with my rant now.

Why the [frick] does a western need 232 million?

That is a pretty high budget for a Cowboy movie. I was never really interested anyway.

I like the cast, except for Depp as the Indian guy. Maybe the next studio who picks this up will get a Native American for the role. The guy from Cowboys and Aliens did a really good job! They should look to him.

Too bad for Armie Hammer. I know he's been tryna get a big name gig for years now. Hopefully he'll be attached to something really big soon.

Budgets are getting out of control and outside of Pirates Bruckheimer's recent films have not performed well.

That Marvel can make something like Avengers for about $170 mil and Green Lantern cost over $200 mil tells you that spending is often insane where it shouldn't be. I say good for Disney here. No reason films should cost so much. Filmmakers just add CGI rather than actually being creative. This is where Nolan succeeds most.

What the [frick] could possibly cost 240 million dollars when filming a goddamned western??? "Cowboys and Aliens" budget was 160 million?

Jeebus!!! With that kinda hooker grease I could make the movie AND it's sequel!

The Lone Ranger is an iconic character, and this is the treatment?

Screw the Iron Mouse!

I was just about say...

Seriously 230 million dollars? Even if 50 million went to Johnny Depp, that's still 180 mill...which is about 140 mill more than what True Grit cost.

Obviously there was a problem.

Thank God. Johnny Depp as Tonto. I shake my fist at the universe. There are PLENTY of ACTUAL Native Americans who would have liked to have auditioned for the role they handed to the white guy who already owns his own island.

Smart move. The Hobbit is going to be a major hit, while a big budget, mainstream zombie movie associated with Brad Pittiful should be quite popular as well.

Johnny Depp has legions of fans, but the Lone Ranger just can't compete with Middle Earth and Zombies.
