Fans of television comedy are in mourning today at the loss of the legendary Ed Asner, who passed away at the age of 91. Asner was well known for his comedic role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show which he then reprised in the dramatic series Lou Grant. He was also a lifelong activist serving as the President of the Screen Actors Guild, and fought for the rights of his fellow actors long after he served his time in the position.

Younger audiences will know Asner for his roles in the likes of Up and Elf, and for comic book fans, he was the voice of J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man The Animated Series as well as Uncle Ben in Spectacular Spider-Man, Granny Goodness in Superman The Animated Series, Roland Daggett in Batman The Animated Series, Freakazoid's buddy Sgt. Mike Cosgrove in Freakazoid, and many other memorable shows.

Asner is survived by his four children who announced the news. Our thoughts are with them in this difficult time. RIP Ed.

Loved Ed Asner growing up. Easily the best animated voice for Jameson. Rest In Peace.

Asner has a long and illustrious career with far meatier roles, but I can't think anything that has ever hit me nearly as hard as Up did so that will always be the first project of his I'll remember him for.

Thanks for the adventure, Mr Asner.

Long amazing career he had. Acting and voice over. He'll always be Cosgrove from Freakazoid to me.

I’ll always remember him as one of those dickhead Jedi masters in KOTOR who wouldn’t cut you some slack. Rest In Peace.

Ed was in Kobra Kai as Johnny's dad. When i saw the episode where he first appeared, i was thrilled to see him on, still acting.

RIP to an all-time legend. I'll have to check out "Up" now. (Same with a rerun of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant.)

Like many here, I grew up mainly hearing his voice in various animated roles.

To me he's the definitive J. Jonah Jameson, followed by Daran Norris (in The Spectacular Spider-Man) and Bill Woodson (in both the 1981 Spider-Man and Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends).

On the DCAU, whether as Roland Daggett or Granny Goodness, he always had a good performance.

Of late, I've been getting myself reacquainted with Gargoyles, so I get to see his great turn as Hudson.

But above all that, probably his best purely-comedic voice role has got to be Cosgrove on Freakazoid. This one particular bit of dialogue between him and Paul Rugg's title character is a perfect example of it:
