FUTURAMA Star Billy West On A Possible Disney+ Revival, Favorite Characters, And The Show's Ending (Exclusive)

Futurama is, without a doubt, one of the best animated TV shows ever made. Here, star Billy West shares his thoughts on a possible revival, his favorite characters, and how he felt about the series finale.

Billy West is a legend in the world of voice acting, and he's brought a seemingly endless list of iconic characters to life on the big and small screen over the years. One of his biggest early roles, however, was when he got to lend his voice to Bugs Bunny in Space Jam, a movie that's celebrating its 25th anniversary by being released on Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack and Digital on July 6th.

A couple of weeks ago, we had the privilege of sitting down with Billy to discuss his role in the beloved movie but took this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ask him about his time in Futurama.

In that iconic animated series, he brought Philip J. Fry, Dr. Zoidberg, Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth, and a number of others to life on screen. Now, with the Futurama franchise falling under that Disney umbrella, would Billy be open to reprising the role in an arguably long overdue revival on Disney+?

"I've always said that I would love to see that happen because I have separation anxiety from the show," West admitted. "That was my favourite thing I was ever involved with because of the writing. Even if I'd had nothing to do with it, I'd have gone crazy over it over the writing. I have to compartmentalise when I'm watching and pretend I have nothing to do with it because I'll be over critical of my own performances. I'm getting over the stuff, but there's this thing in you that says, 'I could have done it better!' Then, you find out that what you did was perfect. People think it's perfect and they love it, so that's good enough for me, of course."

We had to ask if Billy has a favourite character from the series, and unsurprisingly, he found it impossible to choose. However, it definitely sounds like Fry remains a very special creation to him.

"I don't know. I was presented with such an amazing opportunity to express myself. These characters are Matt Groening characters and bigger than life. It was my responsibility...you can't do a throwaway voice for any character even if it's the space garbage man. You have to give it something that has some meat on it because you can't just go, 'Hey! I'm collecting garbage!' That's something anybody could do and I thought long and hard before I opened my mouth with any of those characters. Fry was something I had never done before which was use my own voice for a character, but as a 25-year-old version of myself."

Now, if you followed Futurama right to the end, you'll know that it had a beautiful ending with Fry and Leela. There's certainly room to tell more stories in this world, but if that is it for the series, how does Billy feel about the series finale? We asked if he was satisfied with how things wrapped up, and he responded with a resounding, "Yes, absolutely! It was very satisfying. It was bittersweet in a way because I know these people so well. I worked with them for so many years and always knew where I was going. At the end, it was, like, 'Okay, now I get to go and live among mortals again!' [Laughs]"

Could be cool to see more Futurama but the show had a pretty perfect ending

Plus near the end the show was starting to run out of ideas.

@dracula - Maybe there is a new generation who grew up on Futurama reruns who have some great ideas for new Futurama stories.

There were some good moments in the Comedy Central revival, but overall I was hugely disappointed in it. It just felt empty and gimmicky a lot of the time, and (as Simpsons did) the characters were just there to set up jokes and quickly arrange for the plot-of-the-week.

The original run was just so much more character driven and explored its sci-fi tropes in a more organic way.

So, while I wouldn't say no to more Futurama, I'd rather see some new show with Futurama's vibe (with Billy West and the rest of the cast if possible, or even just more work for them in general because they're all great).

@dracula - I feel like the first ending was perfect (the one with the opera). It was downhill from there.

Anybody ever see when Howard Stern ambushed Billy with John K?
Dude's a prick. Hopefully Mr. West is vindicated knowing that Stern is a hack and the world knows John K is a psycho sex pervert.

Just finished rewatching the show, mostly great.

Original run had no bad episodes.

the TV movies were okay, Bender's Big Score being the best, the rest being okay.

revival was good, wasn't as consistently good as the original run but good and there were several episodes just as good as the original.

the simpsons crossover was......well it was better than the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover but thats not saying much

@dracula - Yeah, the crossovers felt like the writing staff had no ideas beyond "crossover".

I've been meaning to rewatch the earlier seasons so I can finally watch the whole show in its entirety. And this reminds me I can with D+ now.

Futurama's original run was amazing and paved the way for shows like Rick and Morty and Star Trek Below Decks, but those newer shows are better at "doing Futurama" than the revived Futurama was to me.

What about a spiritual sequel, set in the year 4000 with the cast taking new roles (except maybe DiMaggio). Use the opportunity to create a new aesthetic and to play with new sci-fi tropes that couldn't be fully explored in the year 3000 (while keeping a pretty "normal" vibe for society).

Maybe set it up as more of a dystopia, in a kind of Logan's Run style. Go higher concept. Maybe the brain slugs have taken over and people are mostly fine with it (use it as a loose analogy to social media where everyone always has their eyes on their phone / stare off into space). Not just using it as a cheap gag, but setting the series status quo as an indictment on social isolation the same way that the original pilot approached careers and job placement.

(It's easy to overlook how much of an indictment on our economic system the show is, but remember Bender started off suicidal because he was only programmed to build suicide booths, Leela was being forced to force other people into careers they didn't want, and Fry was desperate to avoid being caught in the same loser cycle of his previous life. That's actually a pretty heavy and serious starting point for the series. That was always the Futurama magic to me: to be able to take serious topics seriously and effortlessly slip in a wry joke about it. The later shows were often just an excuse for the gags.)

When I say "except DiMaggio", I mean that Bender is still just there a thousand years later. This gives you some continuity with the first series, keeps the fan-favorite catch-phrase-mascot around, and also gives you a reason to do organic callbacks to the original series. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

@Spock0Clock - No that's good, I'd be down for Futurama the next generation. Bender's like Worf, as long as Dorn's alive why recast?

Yeah it ended perfect. I wish they would bring back stuff that didn’t get the final season it deserved like Spider-Man TAS and x-men TAS from the 90s

dracula - 7/5/2021, 12:27 PM
@Einschlagmann - X Men kind of got a finale. Like if you mean something where all the conflicts are resolved and mutants are accepted, don't think that would ever happen

Einschlagmann - 7/5/2021, 12:33 PM
@dracula - you are correct but I know the show runner was talking about a 6th season which I would love to see

such a great show

@dracula - I didn't really like what they did with Fry's parents. It was made abundantly clear they were unredeemable dicks, those moments feel very out of character.

I mean, what was the very first thing Fry did when he found out everyone he knew was dead? He celebrated.

@dracula - I cried at every single one, but something about Fry's brother really touched me.

frick]in love Futurama and West. As a voice actor, he was a huge inspiration for me growing up. He's on my Mount Rushmore of voice actors.
As for a revival, nah. I like @Spock0Clock's idea about a future setting with high concepts. That could be some fun but Fry and the gang are left better where they are. Don't wanna be like the Simpsons

Few shows get a perfect ending. It’d be a shame to have that no longer be the end.
