Josh Wilding Reviews: RISE OF THE GUARDIANS 3D

Released last week in North America and out now in the UK, DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians 3D brings together 'Santa Claus', 'Sandman', the 'Easter Bunny', the 'Tooth Fairy' and 'Jack Frost' in one film as they battle the villainous 'Boogeyman'. Hit the jump to read my verdict!

I'm not a huge fan of animated films in general, but once every so often, one comes along that is something truly special. It's fair to say that Rise of the Guardians now ranks among my favourites and is easily the best to be released this year. The story focuses on Jack Frost as he becomes a "Guardian" and (reluctantly) joins Santa Claus, Sandman, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy in order to stop the Boogeyman from spreading fear across the globe. It's a simple enough idea on paper, but writer David Lindsay-Abaire (Oz: The Great and Powerful) injects an awful lot of heart and laughs into what could have otherwise been totally forgettable. It really is The Avengers for kids! However, it's grounded with a very human element which at times may feel superfluous, but ultimately adds an awful lot and becomes a major part of the movie.

The voice cast includes Chris Pine (Jack Frost), Hugh Jackman (Bunny), Isla Fisher (Tooth), Jude Law (Pitch) and Alec Baldwin (North), and they all bring an awful lot to their respective characters. Each cast member clearly has an awful lot of fun here, with Jackman and Law the standouts. However, that's not taking anything away from the rest of this impressive ensemble, and by the end of the film, it's hard to imagine anyone else bringing them to life anywhere near as effectively. In terms of animation, Rise of the Guardians also excels and Peter Ramsey shows himself to be one to watch out for in his big screen directorial debut. The action sequences are suitably thrilling, while DreamWorks Animation continue to prove themselves as being a serious rival to Pixar with some incredible character work in what is arguably one of the most visually impressive movies of the year.

3D is also used very nicely. While it occasionally feels as if they drop the ball on some scenes, snowflakes and similar other visual effects all come out of the screen and feel as if they really are floating in front of your face - a great use of the format. As well as cleverly re-imagining the iconic characters mentioned above, the likes of Tooth's fairies and North's elves (and yeti's!) are also cleverly altered enough that they should bring a smile to many a child AND grown-up's face. With a touching story, it's hard to imagine Rise of the Guardians not becoming a definitive holiday movie, and while it may of course be aimed at a younger audience, there's plenty here for adults to enjoy as well. After a fairly disappointing start at the North American box office, the chances of a sequel seem slim right now, but the thought of not spending more time with Jack and the gang at some point in the future is very disappointing indeed.

In equal parts heart-warming as it is hilarious, this beautifully animated film is great fun and perfect viewing this holiday season. Rise of the Guardians shouldn't be missed.

When an evil spirit known as Pitch the Bogeyman tries to take over the world by inspiring fear in the hearts of children, the immortal Guardians, aka heroes from different childhood stories — Jack Frost, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy , Sandman and Santa Claus — must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.

STARRING:

Chris Pine as Jack Frost
Alec Baldwin as North
Hugh Jackman as Bunnymund
Isla Fisher as Tooth
Jude Law as Pitch
Dakota Goyo as Jamie

RELEASE DATE: Out Now!

@Josh 5 stars man? Wow. If your critical eye can say that than I guess it's worth a shot. Btw, animation is amazing as a genre.

wreck-it ralph was way better but dreamworks is still really good. They also made how to train your dragon as well.

There's very few animated films I would award 5* (Toy Story, Up, Wall-E), but this movie is well worth checking out. Is it perfect? Well, no film is PERFECT, but it is one which adults and kids can really enjoy and I highly recommend it. Bunny > Wolverine. :P

Unfortunately, Wreck-it Ralph isn't released over here until next February (just like The Muppets earlier this year). It looks fantastic though, so I can't wait to check it out! Frankenweenie was also a pleasant surprise I thought.

Silver Lining Playbook, go see it and be blown away by a screenplay worthy of an Oscar that hits every beat with perfect pitch. 9/10

Twilight Breaking Dawn part 2, utter shit until the last fight which is 2nd only to the Avengers this year for outstanding achievement. The kind of fight the X-Men movies should have had and wished they had! 4/10

Paperman is the real highlight of Wreck-It Ralph

Paranorman is definitely the best animated film thsi year for me, followed closely by Wreck-It Ralph and then this. Really, really great movies all 3 of them.

Brave was very good too, but just that...very good.

The plot does seem rather similar to the Terry Pratchett Discworld novel Hogfather.

Not that I am claiming copying as there is nothing new under the Sun.

IMO this movie better than Wreck it Ralph. Wreck It Ralph stared out good but the middle act of the movie drags and becomes very annoying on the candy stage.

Rise Of The Guardians however is just great from start to finish and has a much more powerful message in it and Jack is a really identifiable guy.

"Well, no film is PERFECT", obviously Josh never watched White Men Can't Jump.

On the real, tho. Taking the kid to watch it tomorrow. We were gonna watch it on 2D, now, seems like 3D is a good call.

How To Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2, and the first Shrek are my favorite Dreamworks. I really can't wait to see this tho.

Paranorman was pretty cool, but the story wasn't that impressive to me. And Brave fell pretty flat in my opinion. Not quite up to par with what I expect from Pixar. Can't wait to see Ralph either.

Great review. Can't wait to see it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! I could see some sort of sequel from it if they really wanted. Maybe something involving more legendary characters, like the Leprechaun or maybe Halloween?

Couldn't agree more UniBeam11
I ACTUALLY wondered of Tom Hiddleston was the voice actor for the Bogeyman. It sounded just like Loki.

The animation was drop-dead gorgeous, even if the story was lacking a bit.

I actually prefer most of Dreamworks' animation these days to Disney's. My favorites of Dreamworks were Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2, How To Train Your Dragon, and Shrek. Btw, by these days, I mean from like 2008, with the exception of the first Shrek, because if we are talking about overall, then Disney/Pixar wins.

Personally, I miss the good ol' days of Tarzan, The Lion King, and stuff like that. Although, I loved The Incredibles, the Toy Story movies, Up, and Ratatouille. I have not seen Wreck It Ralph yet, but I want to see it. Also, I thought Wall-e was sooo over rated. Just saying.

OK. You know how you guys have been claiming that The Dark KNight Rises/X-Men: First Class/whatever have been awful when a lot of the public and most critics would think otherwise. The film where everyone thinks its awesome and you end up befuddled at how the hell that's possible?

This movie finally did that.

It had some good moments: the animation was well-detailed, Alec Baldwin's North and Hugh Jackman's Easter Bunny were certainly interesting, it's fight scenes were fairly creative, and I LOVE Jude Law as the villain.

The last time I got into a movie for free and wanted my money back was in Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li. This isn't nearly as bad, and has more good going for it...

but, GODDAMN I HATE THIS MOVIE!!!
