New Shortlist Of Actors To Play Tetsuo In Akira Emerge Including Paul Dano & Toby Kebbell

We know Garret Hedlund will play the lead role of Kaneda, and it looks likely that Kristen Stewart will play his love interest Ky. But who will star as the character most closely associated with the Manga classic, the mentally unstable psychic Tetsuo? Well quite possibly one of the following.

From THR..

D.J. Cotrona (the Detroit 1-8-7 star who just wrapped the role of Flint in G.I.Joe 2: Retaliation), Logan Marshal Green (who appeared in the M. Night Shyamalan-produced Devil and will be seen in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus), Toby Kebbell (he caught the eyes of Warners execs with RocknRolla and is in War Horse), Richard Madden (Robb Stark in Game of Thrones), Rami Malek(appeared in The Pacific and has a supporting role in Twilight: Breaking Dawn—Part 2), and Michael Pitt (the breakout actor on HBO's Boardwalk Empire). Also retesting for the role are Paul Dano (Cowboys & Aliens) and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro).

Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter are also said to be wanted for roles. THR also say that Kaneda and Tetsuo will be brothers in this story and not just close friends. Now this was a fixture of the original script which has undergone some re-writes so whether they are just going by that I don't know. I certainly hope so! Anyway, what about this shortlist. I'm not familiar with every name but out of those I do know I would say Dano and Kebbell would suit the role best, both are definitely great actors. Pitt and Madden are also interesting choices. What say you guys?

I think if you haven't gotten over the fact that this is an American remake by now then it really won;t matter who they cast. I've accepted it, now i just want them to deliver a great movie..her's hoping beyond hope!

Funny that I don't recall this backlash when Scorsese remade Infernal Affairs..

Tetsuo makes or breaks the film.

Seen all of these actors' work.. except the Twilight guy. Paul Dano is where the money is at. He looks the part AND he can act. Safest bet right there. Tetsuo isn't supposed to be some alpha male, 30-year old like the other actors appear to be. Tetsuo should be, more or less, the beta male compared to Kaneda. Paul Dano side by side with Garret Hedlund looks right.

No offense but it really is. So it's just the names you are hung up on then? We don't know what is going on there..they may be altered or changed completely and even if they are not they might have a reason in the story that certain characters have these names..like a Blade Runner type deal where the society is directly influenced by Japanese culture. And even if they don't do any of those things, it's just a NAME! It is th elast thing I am worried about with this movie. I'm not saying it will be good, I already hate 2 of the lead actors for God's sake. But get over the "no Asian actors" thing already. It's an American remake..they ARE going to cast American actors.

Change their damn names, and thought Joseph Gordon Levitt was playing Tetsuo

Michael Pitt is absolutely awesome but is too old for the role

I don't like quite a bit of Anime..he does have a point about all of that silly fast talking, ultra exaggerated shit. But that's only one type. Akira isn't like that at all..well, a little bit in parts:)

D.J. Cotrona is doing his best Henry Cavill impersonation in adding to his list of "almost roles"

@jlabatman0511: Of course, that's his opinion. Not to mention, the guy seems rather slow AND he doesn't give good definitive reasons as to why he hates it. Personally, I find anime to be more dynamic and more interesting than cartoons here in the States and we can have some characters with big eyes and exaggerated features too. It's called: cartoons. ADDITIONALLY! Anime tends to be more "realistic" looking than American cartoons nowadays lol. Big O, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Gundam Series, etc. look WAY more.. god I'm beginning to hate this word... realistic than say Danny Phantom, Adventure Time, and all these other cartoons kids watch on television today.

An American remake of this comparable to a Japanese remake of Captain America...

GraphicCity Cotrona was almost Superman, too...so yeah, that title sounds rather fitting for him.

I think an Americanized remake of another live action foreign film is different than Americanizing a Japanese anime. Japanese anime has never and doesn't translate well to Americanizing. There are certain films you just don't Americanize anyway. Can you ever imagine Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon being Americanized? Uggh.

Not the least bit interested in this one.

Move over Howard the Duck. There is a new film to supplant you as the #1 "What the [frick] were they thinking?" film. This is going to end badly. I mean in a "Fran Drescher-as-a-phone-sex-operator" kind of bad.

Lord Loki has spoken

Can't say I'm excited over this movie. Though, I can see the names not needing to be changed. Look at movies and shows like BladeRunner and Firefly, In both these worlds, eastern and western cultures blend to make a melting pot of the two.

I am done with this. I hope some one drops an A-bomb on the set, as its the only chance this has of following the spirit of the original...

@ncreb the new setting is Neo-Manhattan.. Only a matter of time before Kaneda becomes Kenny, Kei becomes Kate, and Tetsuo becomes Terry....
