ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Passes $60M In China Debut, Setting International Box Office Records

Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron's Alita: Battle Angel wasn't given much of a chance by box office analysts prior to its release, but the divisive anime adaptation looks set to prove the doubters wrong.

Tracking for Alita: Battle Angel in the buildup to its release was not good, and although the anime adaptation hasn't exactly set the box office on fire domestically, it has done a lot better than most analysts predicted.

Now, the movie looks set to continue its success overseas.

The Robert Rodriguez-directed sci-fi flick opened in China this weekend and took in a very impressive $64.8M, which is actually higher than Fox's estimated $62.3M. This gives the studio its biggest opening of all time in the Middle Kingdom and also sets a new February IMAX record.

Alita: Battle Angel currently sits at $263.3M globally, and if it continues to draw, we may see a sequel for the cyborg warrior with a heart of gold (well, plutonium) yet.

Tell us, have you been to see Alita yet? If so, what did you think? Drop us a commend down below, and check out a stunning Chinese one-sheet and a batch of recently released character banners.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm glad it's doing ok. How much will it need to be profitable?
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 2/24/2019, 11:11 AM
@Polaris - I've seen reports saying that it needs to gross around 400 mil to be profitable.

@HeavyMetal4Life - seems achievable, thanks!

@Polaris - I think so. Deadline or whoever I was reading said that Alita is currently tracking around how well Ready Player One did in China, and that movie ended up grossing around 200 mil in the Middle Kingdom. Only time will tell but this is a great sign for some good legs in China.

We also have to see how Alita does in Japan and some other markets.

@Polaris - Most estimates say it has to make at least $500 million worldwide to turn a profit, which doesn't look very likely right now.

@Feralwookiee - uh oh it's not... impossible, but it's going to be VERY difficult :/

@HeavyMetal4Life - I just read it needs 500 mil, but fingers crossed it keeps doing well in China and in those markets when it opens

Great movie, glad to see it doing better than expected overseas, really hoping it gets a sequel. Actually going to see Alita again in an hour.

The Dark Tower TV Series Aiming For April Start Date

Amazon Studios has begun looking to assemble a cast ahead of a mid-April start of production in Croatia, where the series is expected to film until late-June.

The series will of course focus on Roland Deschain, a young boy from a long line of “gunslingers”, and his “ka-tet” comprised of Cuthbert Allgood, Alain Johns, Ileen Ritter and Jamie De Curry in addition to his girlfriend, Susan Delgado. The studio is currently looking at actors and actresses, ages 16-18 for all the roles listed above.

@IcemanX - Great News! I really hope its good! I really wanted to like the movie but it feels like a missed opportunity...13 1 hour episodes seems way better

My review:
It's an amazing experience. If I had one complaint, it's that it ends too soon and demands a sequel, if not a trilogy. And I really hope it gets sequels, because it deserves them. I also love that the hero is a girl and, though incredibly skilled, intelligent, and genuinely good, also isn't completely invulnerable or a high moral authority at all times who always knows what's best and how to solve every problem. She makes mistakes, she becomes uncertain, she fails. At every moment, I could relate to her struggle. This is how you make a great heroic character. This is how you start a great science fiction universe! James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have, in my opinion, taken what was already great source material in the manga and animated movies, and improved it in just the right ways. By the way, I hadn't read the mangas or seen the animated movies before, but I seeked them out after seeing this movie.

@ImmovableForce - Good review. I (personally) loved the movie as well. The only thing I would add is that, having seen the original Anime film (though, not the later series or having read the Manga) I felt it not only recreated many shots and beats from the original, it actually did it better!

I definitely recommend it and hope it gets the sequel that it very much deserves!

It was fun. Meanwhile, How to Train Your Dragon scored the best opening in the trilogy with $55M (it's already at $58M domestically). It's also at $275M worldwide. Sweet film and fitting ending, if not as strong as the first two.

It was ok. The uncanny valley eyes on Alita sorta drew me out at times.

@Edministrator - Yeah those eyes were kinda jarring at first. But going back watching the Anime after watching the movie...those eyes made perfect sense. You look at her and say...'Now I can tell she is a cyborg!" Glad they took liberties and didn't make her quite human looking.

There were practical questions I had while watching it, such as "Can't somebody make a helicopter?", and some of those things bothered a friend of mine who thought there were too many of those kinds of problems. I can tell you the manga and even the animated movie answered most of those. Watching this movie, you may have to suspend your disbelief on some things and just assume they have a logical answer that it simply didn't take the time to address. Maybe they'll touch on some of them in the next one?
