I have some good news here for fans of Berserk or manga in general. There will be a series of animated movies adapted from widely popular dark-fantasy-manga. Titled "Berserk Golden Age Arc 1: Egg of the Supreme Ruler", is the first of 3 films to animate the series' Golden Age Arc which spans 13 volumes of the manga. The trailer reveals a January 2012 release date for part 1.

Here is the new trailer.

For those unfamiliar with Berserk. Released in 1990 and still going, Berserk is a manga series written by Kentaro Miura. Berserk follows the life of anti-hero protagonist Guts the mercenary and antagonist Griffith. Griffith led the mercenary group "Band of the Hawk", while later joins the ranks of demonic gods that intend to create a hell on earth. The story's common themes are horror, fantasy, drama, heavy violence, and sexuality. Quite possibly the most sophisticated writing and art ever, trumps any other graphic novel available in my opinion.

Here is a clip from the 90's short run anime series.

Definitely awesome news!!

But why dont they just continue the ´90 series with these movies?!:/
Why they have to start from a beginning again?!

@Alex

The original 90s series was based loosly around the manga. This version is based solely on the manga and is suppose to follow the comic to a T. There were alot of factors left out of the 90s anime that come into play WAY later on in the story, so finishing it would mean a bunch of crappy filler. This is one of my ALL TIME favorite series and I almost want to cry after seeing how amazing the animation looks. For anyone thats likes hard, fast and as gruesome as it can get, you will love Beserk and its very dark hero.

felixxx@ Ok well then i definitely give my blessing to it!!:) Hope the violence and darkness of the original anime stays the same in this new one.
And yeah Berserk is one of my all time favorite series too. Both the manga and the anime.
I still remember how [frick]ing mad i were when they didnt continue the anime. Thats why i was asking why they start from beginning again.

@alex
Felix is correct where the original series suffered from a poor adaption from the manga. Too many liberties were taken to make it TV friendly, even though it was still an adult anime. The series also played with the original story. I imagine its content put the series in a late night slot which had it suffer in ratings. A movie adaption allows the story to be more closely followed, which is very good:)

Berserk has set the bar so high for me. The story and artwork is so innovative on every level. I am very excited to see this done right. I saw skull knight in the trailer so we can assume this first part ends with the proper conclusion. January 2012 couldn't happen fast enough!

God i wanted to kill Griffith when he... did that thing to... you know who!

I dont wanna spoil anything to those who havent read the manga or watched the anime.

@bandrews
Check it out! Then read the manga. Not gonna saw where, but if you check online some sites, some host entire manga series for your reading pleasure. After that you will realise that nothing, and I mean absolutely [frick]ing nothing compares to berserk! Berserk makes any other manga and graphic novel seem like a walt disney comic.

@alex
Like I just mentioned to bandrews. You can find the manga online for free. Getting the conclusion to the eclipse is SOO rewarding, and that is actually where guts's story truly begins as the "black swordsman".

Berserk.. Live action.. [frick]ing hell yeah!! That would be killer.

AlexDeLarge87 - 7/16/2011, 3:26 PM
thou it would need more than just one movie to tell the whole story.
AlexDeLarge87

but that has been don before (The Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter)

I was trying to think who could play Guts and only one guy comes in mind.

Kellan Lutz. He has the looks, the height and muscles and maybe the acting skills too. Not sure about that one cause i havent seen him in anything else than Nightmare On Elm Street remake but i think he could pull it off with the right script and right director to guide him.

another guy who comes in mind is Tom Hardy.

Who would play Guts? Thats hard, for myself being such a fan. He would have to look entirely identical; dark hair, dark eyes, deep voice(worked well in the anime series), massive build. Maybe I'm being too picky. lol

@alex
You know, who I'm thinking? Is ``Joe Manganiello``, the guy in the running for Supes. I`d think hes alot more suited for Guts. Tall, dark complexion, dark hair & eyes, big build, and with a ``[frick] you and I dont give a [frick] attitude`` he`d be perfect!

One2ephu@ He would be great!:)

One2ephu@ That is a damn good choice . He has a grizzled rough look. he's tall as shit and he can act well. good call on that i had always wondered but never took the time to think about who.

Yes it IS great news! Goin ape shizz over here and now I'll be stir crazy until it reaches this side o the world. Are y'all SURE they're gonna continue the saga further into the manga series (past vol. 13)???

I've had the conversation about who should play Guts in a live action...haven't found someone fitting yet. The dudes mentioned here ARE tall dark and handsome, but not right for Guts. I will make it my mission to find a dude sexy enough for that roll. Haha. I'm lettin my geek flag fly high and proud.

Kentaro Miura is my hero and an artistic inspiration!

Haha! Touche my friend! But in all honesty...NEVER him!

@ everyone-
I really REALLY hope Susumu Hirasawa is gonna do the soundtrack! it just wouldn't be the same without that dark, ambient sound that builds up to horrifying audio perfection!
