Voltron, was an American cartoon which premiered in 1985. It utilized footage from the 1981 Japanese anime series Hyaku Jūō Goraion (Beast King GoLion). The two shows have vastly different storylines but share the same battle footage (similar to how Power Rangers repackages Sūpā Sentai Shirīzu (the Super Sentai Series).  The second season of Voltron, which forms the giant robot from vehicles instead of Lions, uses footage from Kikō Kantai Dairagā Fifutīn (Armored Fleet Dairugger XV). Dreamworks Animation purchased the rights to Voltron in 2012 and the animated Netflix series was announced in April 2016. Lauren Montgomery (Superman: Doomsday, Green Lantern: First Flight) and Joaquim Dos Santos (Justice League Unlimited, Avatar: The Last Airbender) serve as showrunners.

It's the animation from Avatar: the Last Air bender, right?

@TheSoulEater - The same studio is doing it. The Legend of Korra/Avatar animation proved to be very successful here because it blends elements of both american cartoons and classic anime.

The Hollywood studios are bringing back everything from my childhood like Transformers, G.I.Joe, TMNT, Voltron, and Thundercats.....

....now adults have something to watch when they get up in the morning to go to work....... finally!!!

@incredibleTalk - They can take new Thundercats back, because that sucked... hard.

@Luminus - The Thundercats reboot wasn't bad sure it wasn't as good as the original one but it was good.

@MrFridayNights - it's hard to compete with nostalgia.

@MutantEquality - Yes, it is. Except that I just recently rewatched the original Thundercats and then tried to watch the new one. The new one was too busy trying to be epic, instead of being fun.

The "Thundercats" adaptation to live action on the big screen would make loads of money since it deals in the "martial arts" aspect of action. The ethnic/oriental people that you could hire for that movie are limitless!!!

Nunchuks
The Staf
Sword
....great martial art weapons to work with!!!

The animation looks awesome. I got excited. But then I paused on the drivers of the robots and was disappointed. The original ones were very different with both personality and body type. Now they all look the same but stuck in a girl instead of the nerd in the green suit.

@MutantEquality - still, I'm gonna give it a chance. It's all about the action anyway.

This looks really, really good.I'm thinking they are using this as a test to see if there will be enough interest to do a live action movie.
