Though we did get a shadowy first look at Ryuk in the trailer for Adam Wingard's Death Note back in March, the director has now shared a new poster for the upcoming Netflix adaptation, which gives fans a much better idea of what to expect from Willem Dafoe's take on the shinigami.

For those unfamiliar with the story, Death Note follows a student named Light Turner (Nat Wolff) who uncovers a mysterious notebook that kills people if their name is written in it.

Also starring Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, Keith Stanfield as “L,” Paul Nakauchi as Watari and Shea Whigham as James Turner, Death Note hits Netflix on August 25.

I know nothing about the comic, I hate manga, but I really love The Guest, and the idea behind this appeals to me. Sounds very interesting. As does Dafoe as the villain. Can anyone tell me if it has a philosophical bent? Beyond just 'should I kill people with this or not'? Sounds like a bit of a Faustian tale, which has me intruiged. Is the original work smart?

Oh side note, I wish he'd put Dan Stevens in this. Between the Guest and Legion he's one of my new favourites.

I had forgotten he was playing this creature, Ryuk. The poster is pretty good and I can see some semblance of him in the character.

I'll try to remember to see this in a few months.

I'm interested in this because it's got some actors I like and I dig the director (it is a tad worrying that it's from the same writer as The Lazarus Effect and Fant4stic), but I haven't read the manga. Should I read it before this? How does this look compared to the manga?
