Ghost in the Shell is shaping up to be one of 2017's most exciting sci-fi movies, and a big part of that is because Scarlett Johansson will be playing The Major. Not an awful lot is known about what we should expect from this take on the beloved anime, but the actress shed some light on her role in the latest issue of Empire Magazine. With that comes a brand new official image which you can see below.

"I've been a person without a body, now I'm a mind in a synthetic body," she says. "Eventually I'll go back to playing a body and brain together. This is a ride that's not just explosive and exciting, but also curious and reflective." Director Rupert Sanders reiterates that point by adding that this take on Ghost in the Shell (which has some fans very worried right now), "isn't the shit Hollywood version."

Ghost in the Shell stars Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbaek, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, and Michael Pitt. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the movie is currently set to be released on March 31st, next year.

I want to shit on this movie since everything about its early production seemed like a Hollywoodization of the franchise in the worst ways... but it actually looks like it could be on point.

Basically out-Blade-Runner Blade Runner.

It's kind of ironic that my least favorite role of hers is Black Widow. She looks great in this though!!

I wonder how this movie will end because the ending of the first film was pretty out there.

@BlackStar25 - It really looks like it's going to be more Stand Alone Complex than the films, which is great in my book. Never cared much for the films, but the show was amazing (if a bit long-winded). Not sure where the manga itself fits in, though. Never read it.

@BlackStar25 - I thought the preview reminded me a lot of the sequel, with the sex bots with souls, it was a creepy and beautiful movie. I wonder if they are going to put the two together. I think that would actually help with the pacing and story structure.

I think it'll get a 36-48% on RT, be a little wonky, make a decent amount of money, fall into obscurity then become a big hit on Netflix. I think the movie will be fun but I don't think audiences are going to shell out to see this. It might get a cult following, if it is good.
